Sir James Talbot tackles Mrs. Jack Maynard's Displaced Organ

QuaterMiss · 02/08/2019 18:17

Would I be unreasonable to initiate legal proceedings against this man?

Previous thread here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3624032-Not-to-have-realised-until-now-that-Joey-Maynard-s-displaced-organ-was-a-prolapse?

With thanks to Jemima232 for rifling through Sir James’ archives to supply the title of this one.

@Doubleraspberry you need more milk. And a sedative. Or possibly wild strawberries

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 18/08/2019 11:59

I am at the Tiernsee and just went for a run on my first day. The altitude is a killer and I only managed 3.5km before collapsing in a heap, still, red and to all appearances dead. I haven’t had any cream yet though so who knows what difference that could make tomorrow

@DoubleRaspberry

Madam,

Can I refer you to my book Sir James And The Cream-Only Diet which I believe has been published by Jemima although I have yet to receive any royalties and also my novella Tiernsee Troubles and Traumas which has not been published by Jemima, as she considered it to be "frivolous".

Huh.

Find a peasant’s hut and drink some onion garlic milk and eat some buttered bread immediately. If in doubt just break into song.

Syncope · 18/08/2019 13:41

Oh my goodness - I loved the Chalet School books although I only had a few.

@Parker231 could I please have the Dropbox link too? Thank you so much Flowers

MollyButton · 18/08/2019 20:04

I'm so relieved that the altitude issues are not just confined to DS and I!
I was hoping to go up the mountains (via cable car) but given how woozy we felt at Lake altitude we didn't. I think we took a quick day trip to Italy instead.

QuaterMiss · 18/08/2019 22:03

Right, I feel we know each other well enough to ask this without feeling unbelievably stupid.

Seriously, how am I supposed to be pronouncing ‘Bride’ (Peggy’s sister, not random meringue wearer)? I’d been assuming as if followed by ‘zilla’. But atm she’s explaining to Tom Gay that it’s short for Bridget - and I’m all confused and uncertain ...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/08/2019 22:09

I've always thought Bride like wedding. Other nickname for Bridget is Biddy which isn't said in anyway like Bridget..
Then there's Peggy, Madge, Margot, and Daisy for Margaret!

MarieVanGoethem · 18/08/2019 22:26

Bride (meaning “exalted one”) is pronounced something like BREE-da, not as in Bride-&-Groom.

Lonelykettleshed · 18/08/2019 22:28

In my head it's always been 'Bride' as in wedding. I'm not sure that I'm an authority on name pronunciation though. When I first read the books (as a child, in my defence) they included:
Sim-e-oh-neee;
Gill (as in fish) - e-an;
Jo-zet-ah; and
Ev-e-ad-knee (still not sure what the correct pronunciation of Evadne is).

cerys · 18/08/2019 23:24

I thought it was Bride as in weddings as well.

LaurieMarlow · 18/08/2019 23:30

My mind is blown Grin

I’m Irish and I always thought it was Bride like wedding. Bridie is a very popular name in Ireland so Bride made sense to me.

So I googled and looks like it’s closer to Breige or Breda. Mental.

LaurieMarlow · 18/08/2019 23:37

I just finished Challenges, which I’d never read.

Nancy Wilmots time to shine, Kathy Ferrars nearly dies (well not really), Margot being a massive bitch, a runaway and a good play to round things off. Not bad for a later Swiss book.

One thing though. Is it wise to be giving very inexperienced cookery students classes in deep fat frying? I’m sure it’s not
the first time it cropped up.

Surely baking a nice Victoria Sponge is more straightforward than fish shop fish and donuts?!?!

QuaterMiss · 18/08/2019 23:46

See, I didn’t trust Google on this Laurie. I thought there would be an Irish person here who would know ...

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 18/08/2019 23:57

Well as an Irish person, I’ve never come across a Bride before.

Briege, Breda I’ve encountered, but spelt as is.

No real clue tbh.

LaurieMarlow · 19/08/2019 00:00

Just showed it to DH and he says it’s Breda (bree-da) and there would be a fada on the i.

Mind you he doesn’t have much more Irish than me.

HeroicAlien · 19/08/2019 00:17

But that would mean I've been pronouncing wrong for the last 30 years (at least in my head). I won't have it - she's Bride to rhyme with Tried and that's the end of it.

Equally, I've always assumed it's Ev-ad-knee. Please don't tell me I had that wrong as well.

I finished a complete re-read in order over May and June. Not sure it was the best idea to be honest - you start to spot all the regular racism/lack of feminism.

NewSchoolNewName · 19/08/2019 01:25

I always assumed it was Bride as in bride-and-groom too.

GreyBasket · 19/08/2019 09:00

Why is reading when lying in bed considered to be the worst thing practically anyone can do? Just come across another reference to it in Tom.

As almost all my reading is done horizontally, there is clearly no hope for me.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/08/2019 09:07

And doing too much homework will give you brain fever!

Yugi · 19/08/2019 09:19

My Irish granny and great-aunt were both Bride and pronounced as bride and groom

Doubleraspberry · 19/08/2019 09:30

Phew! Bride not being Bride would be a nightmare. I still can’t say Grizel any other way than Grizzle, although this is partly because I actually know a Grizel (short for Catherine obviously Hmm) who pronounces it Grizzle.

Altitude calming down now - run less awful today. Do go up in the cable car, Molly. The Pertisau one is only very slightly higher and the Rofan one is just fabulous views. You only need to walk a short way to a nice hutte and have coffee or the biggest schnitzel you have ever seen.

QuaterMiss · 19/08/2019 09:39

So it seems I was right to be confused about Bride. Though I’m wondering if EBD intended Breed(a) Leads as that would be cute.

Tom is proving rather entertaining! Now I’m behind with all my ironing and packing.

Have just finished ‘Prefects’ which I’d never read, and am now considering a strong campaign for a motor boat to use up and down the canals here. How I shall pay for it or where I should keep it is unknown, but it would be marvellous.

Skips off to look at motor boats on amazon.

CarrotVan · 19/08/2019 10:10

Evadne is complicated

CarrotVan · 19/08/2019 10:12

Has anyone ever summarised the medical treatments doled out to the children by the staff? There seems to be a lot of dosing with various things, use of ammonia and iodine, castor oil, and Camp seems to involve rather a lot of laxatives...
