cleaned the door seal
cleaned the detergent drawer (and it’s casing)
no filter on this model (it’s a Hotpoint) so can’t clean that
used a packet of washing machine cleaner from Wilko’s
run empty washes at the highest temp (it’s 90 degrees I think), with and without washing powder

it still smells when I put my head in the drum and sniff
should I get a new one? Can’t really afford it

it's true

I put a big glug of thick bleach in mine once a month, then run it on a hot wash.

I tried washing my clothes in part washing powder/part soda crystals. Everything went extremely hard and crunchy, to the extent that I ripped a pair of jeans pulling them on Angry

Go outside to where the waste pipe from the washing machine goes in to the drain.
Pour disinfectant /bleach down the drain and put the hose down and blast water down after it.

Sometimes, the smell can be coming in from outside (if you have tried everything else).

Run a 90° cycle with a good splash of Zoflora, then add a capful to the softener compartment with every wash and leave the door of the washing machine open for at least an hour once you've finished with the laundry.

Thank you all very much for taking the time to respond. I think my first step will be dragging the thing out to check the pipes at the back. There is some kind of relationship between the waste pipes and the soil pipe cos I get smells from the capped-off soil pipe downstairs when the washing machine is draining upstairs ....

Vinegar and soda crystals on hottest setting. Leave the drawer and door open when not in use

Jupiters · 02/08/2019 22:12

I also use soda crystals.

StarlightLady · 03/08/2019 05:55

Dilute citric acid at hottest cycle.

You might have sludge in your pipes dear. It can build up over time.
