To get a new sofa after only 3 years?

Three years ago I bought a sofa from made.com that's a pain in the arse. It's already saggy and after EACH time you sit on it you have to plump it because the cushions are stuffed with feathers. I hate it. It looks like a sad old man. Plus my kids have wrecked it with milk spillages.

Damn you instagram for cheating me into thinking this sofa was the business.

I know it's incredibly wasteful but DFS are in sale and they've some great 0% finance offers...

Have you checked SCS? We found their sofas were cheaper than DFS but good quality as long as you go for the more expensive fibre stuffing to keep them firm. We also negotiated the price down a bit. We got the cleaning guarantee thing, and just be very careful to read the contract and always follow the rules (report a stain always, don't clean it, then do what they say otherwise they can nullify the guarantee).

Johnmoorfeild · 04/08/2019 06:13

Hi I am an upholsterer, you could change the back cushions for fibre cushions. Same comfort as feather backs not as expensive and no plumping up just turn them regularly. I would NOT recommend fibre seat cushions as they go flat.

InspirationWontCome · 04/08/2019 06:34

Oh that does look sad 😔

I also vote for re-stuffing the back and sides, it'll be a gorgeous sofa once it looks cheery!

Remember to show us the after pics!

Have some foam cushions made to replace those saggy feather cushions. From the photo it looks like the base is keeping its shape fine.

I assume the covers on the back are removable?

PooWillyBumBum · 04/08/2019 07:08

I feel your pain. I had a Made sofa and it didn’t lose integrity but it was itchy and SO uncomfortable. Don’t know why I didn’t send it back. Ended up giving it away. Never again.

Re: new sofa I think the old one is so much nicer. DFS sodas are horrid looking and the 0% finance is just a distraction from the fact you’re paying over the odds for cheap tat.

I would re-stuff the back, get a couple of throw cushions and fall back in love with your pretty sofa then start putting money away for the next one. And when you buy the next one go for a company known for lasting quality (not DFS!)

eurochick · 04/08/2019 07:29

For those asking where to buy a quality sofa, try Natuzzi. Great quality, amazingly comfortable.

madcatladyforever · 04/08/2019 07:34

I can't live with saggy cushions it would drive me nuts. Get a new one and donate the old one.

Henlie · 04/08/2019 07:43

How old are your children op? If they’re still fairly young and regularly sit (mess around) on the sofa I’d make do with your current one (which I think is really nice) as in my experience things don’t fair well with little ones. Most furniture, especially sofas will take a beating, and are not really worth replacing with young children 😏

IWantMyHatBack · 04/08/2019 07:46

Don't buy DFS either. Mines 6 months old and already sagging badly. They came out to inspect it, were really rude avd said it was normal and they wouldn't do anything.

My ikea one that was a third of the price lasted much better (and I think they do finance now too)

NoSauce · 04/08/2019 07:53

Feather cushions are a nightmare but like everyone else has said get yours replaced. It’s a lovely sofa and I think it would be hugely wasteful to just get another one.

Biancadelrioisback · 04/08/2019 08:07

Could you not ditch the cushions on the back and sides and replace them with big pillows? In yellow or something?

wheelywheelynice · 04/08/2019 08:24

I would buy replacement cushions somewhat like these shorturl.at/aeKOU
Four or five of the 65 x 65cm should work

Twixes · 16/08/2019 14:01

Got the cushions stuffed. Thoughts? I think it was 80 quid well spent. Two more throw cushions and I reckon it'll look even better.

Lush! So much nicer than the beige monstrosity you were proposing (soz)

HMArsey · 16/08/2019 16:11

It's lovely now! Are you happy with it in general? Am considering a Made sofa but the mixed reviews scare me.

Twixes · 16/08/2019 23:43

I'm really happy with it. I'd say it's even more comfortable because there's now more of a headrest. Thank you wise mumsnetters for talking me out of buying a new one!!

Years ago I used to laugh at my aunt who took literally years to pick a sofa... she was like it had to be the right depth, have a frame that will last and the right backing. Now I follow her exact way of buying.. bought a sofa second hand for £150 five years ago that met with all those conditions and know it will last me for at Lear another 10 years

WhyBirdStop · 16/08/2019 23:54

It's lovely! So much nicer than the DFS blandness.

WhyBirdStop · 16/08/2019 23:55

It looks like a good sofa for napping....

arewethereyetmum78 · 16/08/2019 23:55

I came on to say that I've got that exact DFS sofa you put the picture up of. I've had it 3.5 years and it looks like shit. It's so uncomfy and I want to throw it away but can't afford a new one.

So I'm so glad to see you've sorted your old sofa. It looks fab!

arewethereyetmum78 · 16/08/2019 23:58

To be fair our DFS sofa is in the kid's den so probably a bit too heavy traffic for it 🙈 Just wish we'd bought something cheap and dark for them

soapona · 17/08/2019 00:31

I know people who replace their sofa yearly. I have done it 3 yearly or even sooner. My last sofa I sold for a £1000 as it was as good as new. I only change it due to not suiting new room. Places like DFS and Harvey's are total crap. My current sofa cost £5k but it's my absolute favourite. Light grey leather corner sofa with every seat electrically reclining. I expect this will last me 15 years. I have learnt too many expensive lessons with cheap furniture.

Littlechocola · 17/08/2019 00:35

I tell dh we can’t think about a new sofa because it’s only 8 years old!

bluegirlgreen · 17/08/2019 00:39

@Twixes

That's the fugliest sofa I have ever seen. It looks shit.

Give it to goodwill.

And get another one !!!

So it's only been 3 years. So what? Loads of people buy something new, when it's not been a huge amount of time since they bought the last one...
