To get a new sofa after only 3 years?

Three years ago I bought a sofa from made.com that's a pain in the arse. It's already saggy and after EACH time you sit on it you have to plump it because the cushions are stuffed with feathers. I hate it. It looks like a sad old man. Plus my kids have wrecked it with milk spillages.

Damn you instagram for cheating me into thinking this sofa was the business.

I know it's incredibly wasteful but DFS are in sale and they've some great 0% finance offers...

Me again. Had a thought. You can buy rectangular slabs of fire retardant foam from places such as Dunelm. They are not thick enough to fill a sofa back cushion but would, if cut to size and inserted behind the feather pad, plump it out and provide rigidity/shape. It might be worth trying something like that first?
(I much prefer your teal sofa to the DFS one and it is likely to have a better frame.)

YANBU to buy a new sofa.
YABVVU to buy that sofa.

You say the existing one is wrecked with spillages. What the hell do you think will happen to a light-coloured sofa? You say 'kids', indicating more than one. It will stay clean for about a week.

nornironrock · 02/08/2019 15:37

I can't believe this is a question....

Do you want a new sofa? Yes... Can you afford a new sofa? Yes...

Then just buy the sofa. It has precisely nothing to do with anyone else whatsoever.

where would one go to get a sofa restuffed? i also have a saggy cushion issue

LittleBearPad · 02/08/2019 15:46

The old one is lovely - beautiful colour. The DFS one is meh

Ilovetea33 · 02/08/2019 15:47

I also think your old sofa is much nicer.

RuskBaby · 02/08/2019 15:49

The DFS one is very similar to the one we brought 4 years ago. It’s not as saggy as yours granted but it’s not in the best shape and I’m eyeing another now.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/08/2019 15:49

Get the cushions inners replaced with foam. I did that with a vintage one that was feathers.

Tweetingmagpie · 02/08/2019 15:52

I’ve got a made sofa and it’s really uncomfortable, luckily it was for our playroom and it’s now been relegated to the dog room for then to sit on! It’s less than a year old!

Do it op, but buy a good quality one so you’re not buying another one in a couple of years time.

Lindormilk · 02/08/2019 15:53

Get the backs stuffed and sit the kids at the kitchen table for drinks and meals.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/08/2019 15:54

Anyone who’s had a sofa testified, what did cost. Obviously it depends on size of sofa etc, but just a ball park figure?

Aposterhasnoname · 02/08/2019 15:55

Dammit, testified=testified.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/08/2019 15:57

I give up!

Coffeeandcherrypie · 02/08/2019 15:59

Testified 😂

SinkGirl · 02/08/2019 16:17

You can even buy small chips of foam for this purpose and add to the filling yourself (I expect the feathers are already in some kind of inner case?). Less slab like than a piece of foam (just realised our Made sofa has foam seat cushions but fibre filled back cushions.

They just need more filling and it will be transformed.

I also think the new sofa is really ugly (sorry to anyone who has it!)

We need to get a sofa bed and replace our
Extremely comfy sofa (sniff) and I’m gutted

longtompot · 02/08/2019 16:48

Ex upholsterer here! You can get the cushions remade with foam and have wadding wrapped over it to give the squish factor. They will hold their shape much bett than feather or even just hollowfibre filled cushions.

I am currently sitting on a DFS sofa, given to me 5 years ago by my bro when he moved abroad. He'd had it 4 or 5 years. Its tired now, but pretty sound and I am considering recovering it at some point.

Whatusernamecanihave · 02/08/2019 16:53

I have the exact same sofa! And I bloody HATE it ours is only 2 years old and I’m adamant the scruffy shit won’t be here Christmas time 😂 awful sofa looked amazing new but just can’t handle family ice ☹️

Greeborising · 02/08/2019 16:54

Whilst moving house a few years ago we bought a cheap dsf sofa to tide us over while we waited for our ‘proper’ one to arrive.
It lasted 6 weeks.
It really didn’t get that much abuse but was totally knackered.
I think it’s a false economy to go cheap with a sofa and if you’ve got pets and/or children go leather

Cupoftea7 · 02/08/2019 17:02

I bought a leather one from DFS about 20
Years ago. Brilliant quality. Bought one from
Next 3 years ago. Absolute crap and lll be changing it soon.

JovialNickname · 02/08/2019 17:23

Your old sofa looks like it despairs of life

smileylottie87 · 02/08/2019 17:25

We bought a second hand DFS sofa and after a few months the cushions seemed a bit soft and crap so we bought some hollow fibre stuffing on Amazon for about £30. We stuffed the cushions which took a little bit of faffing to get the right level but it's as good as new now! If you like the sofa but the sag is putting you off then this might be worth a shot

missyB1 · 02/08/2019 17:33

Love your current sofa, it just needs a bit of TLC, get those cushions restuffed (with some foam to help as well), and get it professionally cleaned and protected.

BlueCornsihPixie · 02/08/2019 17:40

You current sofa is lovely!

If you get the DFS one you will be in the same position in 3 years (Or maybe 3 months) with a saggy sofa but the sofa will be white instead of nice

It really looks like those cushions just need a really good plump. We had a feather sofa at my parents and the cushions haven't needed restuffing in 20 yrs! They just need plumping every evening before bed, it was my favourite job as a child!

I would just get the current one restuffed if it's really just saggy not needing a plump. I do think letting kids drink milk on a velvety sofa is madness but if your going to do it you might as well stick with your current sofa rather than ruin another one.

BlueCornsihPixie · 02/08/2019 17:40

That's supposed to say shite
