Aibu to ask if Brecon shows we can beat Leave - if we vote tactically (and vote!)

Just seen results of Brecon by election which is Lib Dem win with large swing. They won partly because Greens and Plaid Cymru were brave and grown up and stood down to max Lib Dem votes (who had best chance of winning). Looks like Labour voters did same thing even though labour stood. Tory majority down to one.Am very encouraged that this is doable. Would you be prepared to do the same in a general election? (In other places might mean voting green or Plaid when they aren’t your natural party).

It’s doable, just requires candidates to put country over party. There’s no way the Brexit party and the Conservatives will make the same agreement so I don’t see why it couldn’t work.

That is what I am hoping too ..

Brecon has been lib dem in the past for long periods of time. So a return to Lib Dem is not so surprising. It is also more likely to be about the conservative candidate not being trusted than about Brexit I'm afraid.

The Brecon Labour candidate argued “it’s not all about Brexit” - the Labour vote collapsed.

JenniR29 · 02/08/2019 09:35

The Tories were taking the mickey in Brecon though! Why would you show such disrespect by fielding the candidate who got recalled for expense fraud?!

longwayoff · 02/08/2019 09:37

If there was a by election here tomorrow, the Tories would be gone, even though it's traditionally blue. Local Tories, many, are 1. Miffed that Tory Remain voters have been ignored. 2. Appalled at what the Tory party has become 3. Dislike ERG intensely. As Tory MPs go, ours is by no means the worst but they'd swap him for the greater good.

loubielou31 · 02/08/2019 10:30

Exactly Jenni, extreme arrogance. I don't think using Brecon as a bell weather is possible.

Ijustwanttoretire · 02/08/2019 10:35

So what you are saying, basically, is that if the remainers vote tactically they can overturn the democratic vote that said the country wanted to leave the EU? And I am not getting into 'we were lied to blah blah blah' argument. I wonder if the roles were reversed how the remainers would feel...

longwayoff · 02/08/2019 11:52

What's wrong with that @iwanttoretire? As Leavers have relentlessly pointed out, a majority - however slender - is a majority. And as you know, we're not keen on the reversal you've kindly given us. It would be 'the will of the people' and Leavers insist that will should be obeyed so Hmm

If there is an election before any Brexit happens, I predict a LOT of not-entirely-contested seats!
