Yes - budget is clearly not a budget, just a deposit!

Pjsandbaileys · 01/08/2019 23:10

In my budget was £10k it would be that give or take a few hundred depending how close to Payday it was 😂😂😂 I admit thisd is coming from a place of sheer envy I wish I had that money to spend at the drop of a hat, I do not however envy the debt people must get into for that end of program shot.

He'd also hate me - I deliberately built a wall in my open plan area as I had no walls for anything, it was a pain in the arse, and was never warm.

MT2017 · 02/08/2019 01:22

I thought this was going to be about his council house programme and was coming on here to support him!

Monty27 · 02/08/2019 01:29

He's so annoying. Can't stand his voice nor his presentation. I will even dare to say nauseating.
Believe me I adore a Geordie accent. He's cute looking the rest is just wrong. I am a supporter of social housing.
The Jamie Oliver of school dinners. Yuk Confused

TimeWastingButFun · 02/08/2019 01:51

Not quite sure how you can get the budget so catastrophically wrong! But what really annoys me about him is that he, as an architect, can't say it. 'Ah-ee-tec' Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

lboogy · 02/08/2019 02:19

I can't stand him either. I don't know what it is but he's just not my cup of tea. He's like the less posh version of the dude from grand designs

Im behind the social project 100% and a am rather partial to George himself lol but the premise that you through shed loads of money of something and it turns out gorgeous well yeah of course it does..........,......should like to challenge them to do a how to do your house up for less type of show lol

I dont think we will get a true reflection on the social housing thing. For a start he has been given the land by manchester city council....so theres a cost hidden there alone.Wonder how many other "donations" he will get in support of his idea to bring it in at a reasonable cost?Nah sorry George..everything costs money and to get a full scale true picture of costs you need to do it all from scratch.Worthy idea granted but be above board about it all.No idea how many millions it would cost to build an estate but I bet he doesn't have it laying around.

thisismeusernameything · 02/08/2019 08:53

A relative of mine was on this season of old house new home. They saved quite a bit by using C4s suppliers. The potential to start going over board is probably too tempting when you’re getting fixtures at knocked down prices.

BillieEilish · 02/08/2019 08:57

Is he actually an architect though? I'm pretty sure Grand Designs bloke isn't either.

Love George though!

laurG · 02/08/2019 09:00

Lots of these shows are like this. It shows the architects in a really bad light. I studied architecture and you can tell straight up that budget is not nearly enough. They should be giving them options or phasing the project... but that would be boring tv. It’s a shame as it’s supposed to highlight the value of design. Just makes it look frivolous and for the rich only. Good design must properly consider budget as a constraint.Plus it’s always different versions of the same youngish London couple who’ve cashed out to live in the sticks! They are always so smug!

George also has some really daft projects. He had a couple on the other week who just did up their kitchen. I can nip round to my neighbours if I want to see a new kitchen! None of it is particularly challenging either. Same design different house each time. Kitchen extension... bifold doors.... black taps... metro tiles...blue kitchen units in shaker style ... white or grey walls, stripped floor boards...every bloody time! A lot of the time he really doesn’t capture the character of the house. It’s all very staged and unreal.

LoafofSellotape · 02/08/2019 09:07

George ( hence why) Clarke is an architect and Kevin (I speak a million languages) McCloud studies the history of architecture and was a theatre designer according to Google.

Chimchar · 02/08/2019 09:15

My DH goes absolutely bonkers about this!

George Clarke does a nice design for a couple with a £50k budget and then two days in to the build says they'll have to scrap the whole thing or it'll look utterly shit, unless they can find another half a million pounds. And they always find the money! Where from?!

Like a pp, our budget is our only budget. We don't have money squirrelled away. I like him, but the show is just not relatable.

longwayoff · 02/08/2019 09:16

You're right sellotape. Kevin M c. Also spent some time in Italy training as an opera singer Confused

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 02/08/2019 09:38

I like George Clarke, he has interesting ideas, even if the end result is something I'd never ever have and is completely impractical.

But will he ever stop banging on about how the "honesty" of random bits of furniture or coving or whatever. It's a chair, George. Get over yourself.

MorrisZapp · 02/08/2019 09:43

He did a loft conversion once in order to give a couple an en suite bathroom. The project grew arms and legs and in the end they got a lovely loft but couldn't stretch to bathroom fittings.

So they had an en suite wardrobe instead. The guy was raging. Cue patronising voice over about how Steve and Belinda had found out that London loft conversions were very expensive but how lucky they were to have the space to put a bathroom in the future.

LadyRannaldini · 02/08/2019 11:27

I've always been told whatever your planned spend is make sure you have 10-15% available for overspend.

StoneofDestiny · 04/08/2019 00:00

I like the programme and him. He is one of the few on TV I'd let loose on my house
