Weird sense of smell

I want to know if this has happened to anyone else?

When I was pregnant, 3 years ago, I had HG and developed a really sensitive sense of smell, if I was upstairs and my husband opened a packet of bread downstairs I could smell it, everything I ate tasted of mould and perfectly fine meat smelled rancid.

Since then I’ve had days where everything I eat will taste like mould and tonight I was cooking some mince and it smelled like dog food to me but DH couldn’t smell it and he ate it and said it was fine, but then other days everything will smell/taste normal.

Yes I had something similar during my DS pregnancy (not DDs though). I smelt mould on anything peanut and coffee smelled like acetone. There were a few other batty smells but I cannot remember them now...

I get this at certain times too. I think it's hormonal tbh.

I became very sensitive to milk and seafood when pregnant with my second. I still have a much better sense of smell now than before I was pregnant. Didn't happen with my first pregnancy though!

Thanks everyone, I was thinking it was probably hormonal but I’ve never met anyone else with it!

Smell is a funny thing. I have had no sense if smell whatsoever for the last 10 years, but before that everything smelled of cigarette smoke for a while.
Very peculiar.

I also had HG and developed a very sensitive sense of smell (even opening the fridge which had been cleaned the day before and didn’t have any pungent food in set me off). Now I find that I seem to get hormonal triumvirate of migraine, sensitive smell and mild nausea which I can’t shift properly for a few days. It’s horrible.

Hello OP
I also had HG and the smells were the worst part, everything had a strong horrible odour from my house, my children the, the car, water, everything, the smells would not stop. But since them I have also had a heightened sense of smell and it is really annoying. Certain foods, perfumes, washing products make me feel ill again and remind me if the relentlessness of HG.

Nautiloid · 02/08/2019 21:24

Oh yes. When I was pregnant it was dreadful. I never had it before pregnancy but now when my period is due it's the same, and also when I have a migraine.

Nautiloid · 02/08/2019 21:25

I also had HG.

HeyDuggeesCakeBadge · 02/08/2019 21:27

I have days where I can't stand meat, it tastes like blood/rancid and it repulse me. Never occurred to me that it's hormonal but probably is the more I think about it.

Potplant · 02/08/2019 21:35

Not quite the same but I had a much heightened sense of smell which Would make made me nauseous and gave me headaches. I stopped wearing perfume because it smelt off and I’ve never got back into it. My MIL surprised us once by washing all our sofa covers in her washing powder. It gave me a migraine the smell was so over powering.

Even now years later when the cleaner has been in at work I feel sick as soon as I walk in. She just wipes my desk with soapy water now.

bananamonkey · 02/08/2019 22:03

I have a really sensitive sense of smell. When I was younger (and veggie) mince always smelt like dog food when my housemates were cooking it!

StarlightLady · 03/08/2019 06:02

Be grateful! Some people have lost their sense of smell which must be awful. At least you know if something (or someone) stinks!

PooWillyBumBum · 03/08/2019 10:10

Currently pregnant and getting over the worst of HG. Driving DH mad as I think our house smells “rotten” and no one else can smell anything. It makes me feel sick, I need to carry things round to smell.

Also food tastes weird or off like you say. I can’t go into details because thinking about it will make me puke!

BaronessBomburst · 03/08/2019 11:06

Yes, I had HG and now 10 years on still pick up on smells, some of which take me back to hell. I still can't bear blue Lenor soft rinse and can spot a mouldy potato from the next room, even though they're stored in an earthenware pot with a lid on.

Blondebakingmumma · 03/08/2019 11:09

I had something similar during pregnancy. It has lasted though

Gottoloveabagel · 03/08/2019 11:11

I didn't have HG but I still can't stand the smell of dog food which started 14 years ago when I was pregnant!! It's never gone
