To tweet BA pilots that I earn less than the INCREASE they're demanding?

I earn 18000 a year. BA pilots are asking for an increase of 20000 a year. Yeah I know about skills and responsibility blah blah blah but AIBU to be upset that my holiday might be ruined? They're bleating in the papers today that they're upset that they now only get to stay in 4 star hotels instead of 5. Angry

OP posts:
PolkadotLollipop · 01/08/2019 15:16

You are being ridiculous, OP.

MarthasGinYard · 01/08/2019 15:20

yabu

Hope they get it too.

Walkaround · 01/08/2019 15:23

CheapSeats - no wonder your pay is so crap if you don't know how to fight for your fair share of a company's profits. Or do you approve of increasingly profitable companies making their profits off the back of squeezing the money and goodwill out of the people who work for them and thus make the profits possible, rather than actually improving the service to customers?

Cosentyx · 01/08/2019 15:27

YABU. Nice to see slagging off bus drivers, too. Sick of this fucking race to the bottom, it's the undoing of the UK, our predilection for breaking everyone down.

Dotty1970 · 01/08/2019 15:32

Pleaser256

Ha, anyone can be a bloody bus driver, not everyone can tolerate the pressure of being a pilot. Yabu

That's not true and a bit insulting to bus drivers really you sound like aBiscuit

queefie · 01/08/2019 15:32

Sorry but your op shows in itself why you earn only £18,000...

Dotty1970 · 01/08/2019 15:34

Jellybeansincognito

They do indeed. It disgusts me that the people who save lives and keep us safe in this world are paid so little but some arrogant numpty with a YouTube channel with a following can earn millions.

It does not make any sense.

I agree

Longdistance · 01/08/2019 15:35

YABU to think any rag would actually print the truth as to why the pilots are striking.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2019 15:39

Go ahead, tweet.

they don't five a flying shit about you. Or about anything else than their money.

Ditto22 · 01/08/2019 15:45

Your approach seems narrow minded, OP. Why would any workforce accept lower standards if they are lucky enough and sensible enough to be unionised? Would you like your employer to lower your pay/ benefits? I'm sure you wouldn't, and if you had the power to try to stop it, I'm sure you would. Instead of complaining, be glad there are still trade unions able to fight for workers' rights. How about complaining to BA instead of moaning about their pilots?

Yabbers · 01/08/2019 15:48

26th July a BA A321 suffered a bird strike climbing out of Tegel airport. Left hand engine was shut down and the pilots returned to the airport and safely landed 18 minutes later.

Then there were the BA pilots who’s 747 was essentially turned into a glider when all engines failed because of volcanic ash. Managed to land safely and save everyone’s lives.

Or Sully landing his plane on the Hudson.

Sure, those are the same skills as a bus driver.

Pay them a decent wage, it’s not an easy job and they pay a fortune to train for it.

OP, plenty of people earn half what you do, does that mean you should never get a pay rise?

Yabbers · 01/08/2019 15:50

I always assumed that was true in other countries as well.

Definitely not.

ifonly4 · 01/08/2019 15:50

Due to the nature of my DH's job he isn't allowed to strike and had to accept it if he wanted the job - believe me you woldnt wnat his colleagues on strike. Luckily he just about earns average money now so we're much better off than some, but previously had to go without a payrise for 4 years. I'm in a union but I think along the lines that if the conditions aren't right for you, you look for another job. Also, morally I wouldn't strike as I wouldn't want to let people down.

We're meant to be flying from Heathrow next week, so no idea how that's going to pan out. DH couldn't take a full week off during the summer, so if we try and rebook it has to fit in a five day slot.

Yabbers · 01/08/2019 15:52

That's not true and a bit insulting to bus drivers really you sound like a biscuit

The difference is bus drivers’ stress is usually caused by passengers, not by the stress of piloting their vehicle.

JackMeadows · 01/08/2019 15:53

@ifonly4 you should be OK next week because strikes must have 14 days' notice and there are no dates yet announced.

coffeeforone · 01/08/2019 15:57

Are they paid less than the market rate and other airlines? How much do other airlines pay pilots?

usernamerisnotavailable · 01/08/2019 16:05

Ffs you are being ridiculous op and sound very bitter and jealous. Firstly, your low paid (presumably low skilled) job has no bearing on the pay of other professions.

My father was a BA pilot for 40 years. The training is intense and at least one trainee was kicked off the course each week. It's not just aptitude and intelligence, it's character and the ability to remain calm and think clearly in incredibly stressful and difficult situations when you have hundreds of lives in your hands. Plus you are legally in charge once in the air.

We missed May but Christmas and birthday celebrations with my father and he went grey in 1 year when he started doing the transatlantic route.

The salaries quoted are for senior first class captains with about 20 years experience.

Just who the fucking fuck do you want to fly you on your precious holiday? Whoever compared it to a bus driver can fuck off too.

Ridiculous comments. Pay them well. Let them have decent hotels whilst they are away from their family for half the year and ensure they are well rested.

You really have no clue.

Kazzyhoward · 01/08/2019 16:07

Pay them what they like for the hours when my life is literally in their hands.

How much of a price increase are you happy to pay on your flight costs?

YouJustDoYou · 01/08/2019 16:07

Are they paid less than the market rate and other airlines? How much do other airlines pay pilots?

Yes. They are one of the lowest paid in the world.

CarolDanvers · 01/08/2019 16:08

I haven't read the thread because I am in the same boat OP and can't be bothered to be harangued for being so self centred, which is how the last thread about this went.

YANBU at all!

YouJustDoYou · 01/08/2019 16:12

US pilots for example get paid roughly, half a million a year. At high overtime (ie, not seeing wives, family, children etc, extreme sleep deprivation and at end of legal hours flown), BA captains may get paid up to £200k (and FOs £120k plus), but 40% of that, so, obviously almost half, at the lower end, will be taken in tax.

Zog14 · 01/08/2019 16:20

Interesting, I thought many U.S pilots were paid relatively low salaries, maybe these are smaller regional carriers?

MissConductUS · 01/08/2019 16:38

What's your source for that figure? According to this, it tops out at closer to $200k USD per year.

Right now pilots are highly skilled and can command high salaries but I think AI will replace them very soon.

I wouldn't fly in an AI driven plane. They can't even get driverless cars right atm.

Biker47 · 01/08/2019 16:43

I went for assessment for British Airways, I even had to pay a fee for that which was essentially a job interview, the training fee for actual pilot training was at least £85,000 at the time, which you had to take the loan out yourself, and British Airways would pay you back over at least 5 years of working for them IIRC.

My cousin is a pilot and he took a loan to pay for training with no guarantee of a job at the end of training, he works for a different airline.
