& I'm not talking about for little kids. I HATE this word. I confess I'm biased as I had some unfortunate incidents as a kid but really? Panties, it's SO old-fashioned. Yet I saw the word used in signage in Victoria's Secret today. It just gets under my skin. Knickers, pants, kecks, grundies, ANYTHING but panties.... bleurgh...

I always think of it as a word that men would like to hear. (Although I'm prepared to be shot down in flames on that one)
"I'm only wearing a tiny pair of white panties" type thing..
No, no and no!!

catofdoom · 01/08/2019 01:12

Mothership4two · 01/08/2019 01:23

I quite like it. In fact I’m going to start saying it now instead of knickers. PAAAANTIIIIIIEEEEEESSSS

CSIblonde · 01/08/2019 03:23

Well according to Jilly Coopers book 'Class' (published in the 80's), panties is favoured by 'lower middles' over 40. But as hideous Americanisms are always creeping into language, it's probably more common now than it was back then.

Yuck, hate it. Don't particularly like knickers either. Reminds me of knicerbockers, like my Grandmas (both born in the 1800s) used to wear.

MarieFromStTropez · 01/08/2019 03:42

@catofdoom Why is your FIL talking to you about 'panties' Grin ?

MarieFromStTropez · 01/08/2019 03:44

@NameChangerOfTheNorth You've taken me back to my school days with the word 'unmentionables' Grin. It's a great word! Can we please subsume it into Mumsnet speak?

AzraiL · 01/08/2019 03:48

Unsexiest word in existence.

AgentProvocateur · 01/08/2019 04:26

I’m in Dubai, and all my non-British friends and colleagues call them panties. And the shops advertise eg “three pairs of panties”.

I used to hate the word, but I’m used to it now. I’ll probs my call them panties inadvertently when I come home 😂

CheeseFace · 01/08/2019 08:03

I cannot abide the word panties. US aside, it's so soft porn/ dirty old man. I've never crossed the threshold of Victoria's Secret as a result.

BurningTheToast · 01/08/2019 08:13

A writer I know (couldn't call her a friend after this!) used the phrase "pantie-dropping smile" about a male character in her first novel. I cringed so hard...

NoSauce · 01/08/2019 08:16

Only fucking brain dead wankers use this word. And coy shitforbrain women

Harsh.

Knickers here.

Fortheloveofscience · 01/08/2019 08:19

My DH used to call my pants panties. I retaliated by buying bigger and bigger pairs until they could basically cover my boobs, and he could see how ridiculous he was being.

I never switched back Grin.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 01/08/2019 08:21

Yuk! Makes me think of gross old men watching teen porn. They are underpants Grin knickers makes me think of those carry on films which makes me laugh Grin

I use the word 'Panties', I'm British born and bred, no one that I know uses it and I spent the first 23 years of my life saying 'Knickers' so God knows where I picked it up from, can only assume it's from watching America TV shows but it drives my fiance mad! He always corrects me.

Trickyteens · 01/08/2019 08:29

Porn sounding, definitely.

Eustasiavye · 01/08/2019 08:30

Makes my skin crawl.
I also want to say I went on the Matalan website 'pants' are trousers on there. I turned it off straight away.
I was looking for knickers and nothing came up, so I typed in pants and it brought up trousers.
