To ask why so many deodorants are 48 and 72 hrs?!

Butterfly98 · 30/07/2019 14:24

I did the weekly shop yesterday, DD needed deodorant and it was so difficult to find one that lasted for 24hrs, the majority on the shelf were labelled as lasting for 48 and even 72hrs! Why would anyone need these or are there some really stinky people out there who don't shower for 2 or 3 days? We all shower daily in my house and I suspect most people do!

I love a 72 hour deodorant. After 3 days I simply apply it again in order to achieve nearly a week’s worth of freshness.

Triskaidekaphilia · 31/07/2019 00:13

I need a 72 hour one so that it lasts for 10 or so hours, the 24h usually leave me stinky by lunchtime. But I have some anxiety related sweat issues.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 31/07/2019 00:26

What do you think will happen if she uses a 48 or 72-hour one? Will she hit 24.5 hour’s since she last sprayed and shout ‘Help, I still smell clean!’?

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 31/07/2019 00:30

I work with someone who rolls out the "you don't need to shower daily" tripe.

Only she really does. We have to spray the office with air freshener whenever she leaves, it's so unpleasant.

At the very least she could give her armpits a flannel wash every morning.

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 31/07/2019 00:37

Having a baby has made me sweat like I never have before, I'm assuming some hormonal stuff going on. Used to use any old sure/dove etc, now use Mitchum 48/72 and still sweat after about an hour. It's all nonsense.

Cosentyx · 31/07/2019 00:47

Oh, FFS, it's a marketing ploy. Just buy her one for sensitive skin or get her a Tom's of Maine or Jason's one.

RubbingHimSourly · 31/07/2019 00:49

Mitchum deodorant really does work. I've been chasing my poor dp with my pits to check.

Cosentyx · 31/07/2019 00:52

I got Mitchum based on MN recommendations and it didn't work for me. Sad

Anxiouszalice · 31/07/2019 01:02

Everyone should shower at least once daily- it's basic hygiene, just like washing your hands after using the toilet.

I'm not sure how true this is but a friend told me her friend who has breast cancer has been advised not to use strong deodorant with Aluminium in it so I do wonder whether no aluminum and paraben-free deodorants are better for health reasons but then they don't seem to work so well!

lboogy · 31/07/2019 01:33

Shower every 2-3 days! Confused
I'm sorry but that's disgusting. Your vagina is crying out for a wash.

lboogy · 31/07/2019 01:37

And the worst part about it is when someone who clearly believes washing every 3 days using a public bathroom they leave that horrible unwashed fanny smell behind. Honestly, I don't get how anyone who doesn't clean themselves regularly doesn't recognise how much they must smell.
And what about your arsehole? You've done at least 3 days of shits and you think you smell of roses?

MN teaches me a lot of things I didn't want to know about some posters

SardineJam · 31/07/2019 01:40

There is no deodorant that has ever seen me through a single day and I shower and scrub my pits daily!!!

aLilNonnyMouse · 31/07/2019 01:46

I shower every 3 days as I hardly sweat even when it's boiling and my hair doesn't get greasy. I never smell (and I have people around me honest enough to say so). I also have Eczema which flares up worse the more I shower.

Using slightly stronger deodorant every other day means I have less flair ups and stay fresh.

SisyphusHadItEasy · 31/07/2019 01:50

I am a civil engineering technologist. I spend all day out in whatever weather (currently hotter than Hades) on construction sites supervising the work. I sweat like a pig and the 48+ hour products are the only ones that keep me from smelling like an unwashed gym sock by the end of my 12 hour day.

And, I even shower....

IsobelRae23 · 31/07/2019 02:15

I can go 2-5 days without showing at times.

I get up, sit in the living room with drinks and my tablets next to me, and only get up to go to the loo. Repeat for X number of days.

Why? because it means my back is in spasm, I can’t climb into the bath to use the shower, as I don’t have a walk in, and would require someone to help me. As my PIP was drastically reduced I can no longer afford this 30 minutes help. But I can assure you I don’t sweat as I’m not moving and I don’t smell- my family, friends and dp, would not hesitate to tell me if I smelled/smelt? (Which one is correct).

So judgy pants, pull them back up, until you know individuals reasons!

IsobelRae23 · 31/07/2019 02:19

@SardineJam Have you tried the ones you put on the night before, wash off in the morning and then use your normal deodorant? After a few days they can drastically reduce the amount of sweat. I used to use it and ds19 uses it too. It is about £10 for a small roll on bottle, but worth it in my opinion.

Mothership4two · 31/07/2019 03:15

All I can think is that those who find not showering daily so disgusting must be very stinky and really need those daily showers! I am an every other day gal and luckily I have never been particularly whiffy. I do however WASH thoroughly on non-shower days.

I grew up in the 70's and a lot of homes didn't have showers. And daily showering/bathing wasn't a thing then. People weren't overly smelly or dirty looking - just the same as today.

I do find some MNers love a bit of "righteous anger/disgust" over the most trivial things.

Mothership4two · 31/07/2019 03:23

I use a salt deoderant and have got on well with it even in the recent hot weather. It is not an antiperspirant though. The salt retards bacterial growth, which stops smelliness, but does not stop you sweating.

Monty27 · 31/07/2019 03:36

OP just get her the same as you if you find it sufficient

TwistyTop · 31/07/2019 03:36

If you wear 48hr deodorant but then wash if off after 24hrs it will explode. You have to be careful with these things

bluebluezoo · 31/07/2019 03:37

Yep. Our new build in the 70’s no one on the estate had a shower. No combi boilers either so a bath required an hour of waiting for the immersion.

It wasn’t unusual to bath two or three times a week. Kids once a week. Families often shared bathwater too.

Rare for someone to smell.

Interestingly i ran out of dog shampoo once, so used human. Dog bloody stank after 48 hours and needed bathing every 48 hours until i got more dog shampoo, when he was fine with every couple of months again. Made me wonder if todays lotions and potions somehow affect our skin chemistry and make things worse...

Northernsoullover · 31/07/2019 07:15

Iboogy not everyone shits on a daily basis! I'm sure if someone does though they'd be in the showering daily bracket. If I have a number 2 I definitely know to shower asap. I think most adults know when they need to shower. Whether that be 5 hours after one (as I mentioned upthread with the hot day example) or on your period where you might just give your nethers a shower a few times a day..
I often wonder if the I shower daily and anything less is disgusting are actually the disgusting ones if they aren't in tune with their bodies.

Crispmonster123 · 31/07/2019 07:28

I shower everyday and There no way you smell if you haven’t showered for 2 days, Unless you are doing strenuous activities or have a sweat problem. It’s impossible. My aunt is a doctor and we spoke about this the other day actually.

Propertyofhood · 31/07/2019 07:53

And the worst part about it is when someone who clearly believes washing every 3 days using a public bathroom they leave that horrible unwashed fanny smell behind.

I can't say I have ever gone into a public loo, sniffed the air and thought 'yep, that's unwashed fanny, the last person who was in here definitely didn't shower this morning'. I have smelt a few unpleasant things in public toilets, but being able to pinpoint it to 'unwashed fanny' isn't something I've ever been able to do.

Are you a fucking dog or something?!

LaurieMarlow · 31/07/2019 07:56

I work in marketing and have done work in this category. Deodorant brands have been instrumental in establishing this myth that people smell if they don’t shower daily and (most importantly) that others can smell them when they don’t detect it themselves (total horseshit).

Please don’t fall for their bollocks (though too late for some on here obviously)
