To ask why so many deodorants are 48 and 72 hrs?!

Butterfly98 · 30/07/2019 14:24

I did the weekly shop yesterday, DD needed deodorant and it was so difficult to find one that lasted for 24hrs, the majority on the shelf were labelled as lasting for 48 and even 72hrs! Why would anyone need these or are there some really stinky people out there who don't shower for 2 or 3 days? We all shower daily in my house and I suspect most people do!

@Didntwanttochangemyname sorry but that is vile. How can you only shower every 3 days?

apostropheuse · 30/07/2019 15:53

I have allergies diagnosed by patch testing, but can use the fragrance free 48/72 hour deodorants that are for sensitive skin.

Wherearemyminions · 30/07/2019 15:53

Camping, festivals, mobility issues, skin conditions that are exacerbated by frequent showering, illness, long haul travel with airport layovers, only having £1 left on the electric and not wanting to run the shower, lots of reasons why someone might want a product that claims to be effective for more than 24 hours. Agree with a pp that it's just marketing bollocks though!

Celebelly · 30/07/2019 15:53

Oh Christ, here we go.

jcyclops · 30/07/2019 16:06

In ideal conditions they can be shown in a lab to be still working after 48 or 72 hours. On a hot day, on someone exerting themselves and who maybe sweats more than average, they won't last anything like this. You can be pretty confident that they will work for 24 hours.
Many things are rated in a similar way. Your tyres on your car are likely to be "V" speed rated (149mph) - it just means they are totally safe to use on your car. Lightbulbs are good example - your 10,000 hr 50,000 switching cycle LED bulb will not reach those figures.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/07/2019 16:09

Good analogy cyclops

Not wanting to buy 48/72 hour deoderant is like refusing to buy tyres rated to 149 mph because you'll never drive that fast, and also assuming that anyone buying those tyres plans to drive at 149 mph.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/07/2019 16:21

I have the sure 48 hour stuff, still stinky as hell at the end of those really hot days last week.

It's all a pile of advertising crap. If your dd's got sensitive skin, definitely unperfumed or natural deodorant rather than sure or that type.

Fluandseptember · 30/07/2019 16:23

just to pick holes, why would they need to last more than 12 hours? Just daytime, surely??

Northernsoullover · 30/07/2019 16:26

Oh here we go AGAIN! Whoever said you can smell when someone hasn't washed in a 24 hour period will smell, how the fuck do you know WHEN they took a shower? Someone whiffy on the bus? Ooh they haven't showered today... maybe, or maybe it was 36 or 72 hours? How would you know?

1forAll74 · 30/07/2019 16:27

It's all just marketing crap, the same with most things you buy.. Just buy something you have had faith in before.and stick with it..

Do you want to buy a jar of miracle face cream costing £1000,that some so called celebrity uses.or would you rather use some costing about a fiver, that is perfectly suited to your skin.?

BinkySodPlop · 30/07/2019 16:31

I buy one that you put on at night before bed, then shower as normal every morning (no deodorant needed after shower). Now I've used it for a while, I find I don't need to use it every day, so yes - it's good for 48 hours. I did use it every day during the very hot weather we've had, but it's very effective.

Pinkout · 30/07/2019 16:32

I know someone who thinks daily showering is enough, she never uses deodorant and it’s absolutely disgusting. She stinks by about 10am, it just gets worse as the day goes on.

Not sure what you think will happen if you buy 48hr stuff. I think it’s a marketing gimmick, most people apply it every day.

Propertyofhood · 30/07/2019 16:43

Ex-fuckin-actly. If you can literally smell someone else's onion BO on a normal UK weather day, then it's because they haven't showered for days or because they don't wash their clothes properly. It's highly unlikely to be because they had a shower the previous morning rather than that morning. And you have no idea when they last showered.

Showering every other day is not 'disgusting'. Talk about first world statements!

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 30/07/2019 16:55

Just to throw something else in for consideration. I’ve noticed only bar soap will remove the super deodorant and get back to just skin snd I feel rubbish if I only use shower gel under arms.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 30/07/2019 19:22

@IKnowPlaces it isn't 'vile', don't be rude. I guess I'm just not as sweaty as some. I shower often enough that my hair looks and smells clean, and the rest of me does too. I live in a cool part of the country so don't have all these heat waves, and where I live there is no pollution so actually, I'm still pretty clean at the end of a day.
Just because someone isn't the same as you, it doesn't mean they are wrong.

LaurieMarlow · 30/07/2019 19:42

Whenever, showering is discussed on MN many people admit to not showering daily and they think they don't smell. They can't smell themselves but others certainly can

People really are quite thick Hmm

adagio · 30/07/2019 19:48

I like pitrok with a gold lid, although I do shower daily and use a scrubby glove in the shower. I never smelled anyway (probably lucky) according to my DH. The long lasting deo are full of chemicals and stuff and so I avoid them (only since I had babies and bothered to care about these things Grin)

ForalltheSaints · 30/07/2019 19:49

A marketing ploy, nothing else.

TantricTwist · 30/07/2019 19:52

I'm guessing the OP does not have a teenage DS. Thank god for 48 hour Mitchum is all I can say.

Halloumimuffin · 30/07/2019 19:52

My best friend admits she sometimes only showers twice a week and doesn't wash her hair for two weeks at a time, and yet I assure you she absolutely does not smell at all.

AndMyBirdCanSing · 30/07/2019 19:53

My Ds (who has autism and learning disabilities) thinks that if he has a 48 hour one he doesn’t need to wash or apply it again for 48 hours

My DH (age 47, no learning disabilities or autism, that we know of anyway Wink) also thought this!

user1473878824 · 30/07/2019 19:54

Is there some sort of law someone most post about this weekly yet has never seen the 8,000 other threads about washing?

huggybear · 30/07/2019 19:58

I don't understand the whole showering it just so you don't smell thing. I don't feel clean first thing in the morning - what are you doing to get that fresh feeling?

ScreamingValenta · 30/07/2019 20:00

I recently bought a budget deodorant, not marketed as 48 hour, as a possible money-saver. During the heatwave last week I got the dreaded tang of my own B.O. in the office just after lunch Blush. Cue shamefaced trip to the loos to try to clean my armpits with anti-bacterial hand wash. I've gone back to my old, 48 hour brand.

Northernsoullover · 30/07/2019 23:49

I should have added, I absolutely DO know when I start to go on the turn as it were Grin I showered in the morning in Spain last week, by lunchtime on the hottest day I caught the faintest whiff brewing in my pits. So I had another shower. This was 5 hours after my morning hose down. Here in the UK I could go two days if the weather is favourable. If my hair didn't get so bloody oily I might be inclined to do so.
Funnily enough the day I became a little ripe was the only day I didn't use my mitchum 48 hour gel using a spray out of laziness instead.
