We've just arrived home from holiday and opened the doors and windows and within 10 minutes there are literally hundreds of thrips/thunder flies! They are all over us, the walls, the doors etc. It's 26 degrees out so having them shut is hell!
Any ideas on how to repel them?

You could hoover them all up and then spray some pest repellent

mckerl · 30/07/2019 11:43

Thanks. I've just hoovered all the walls and now away to buy pest remover and citronella candles! I'm such a wimp with stuff like this x

They look black from the photos, are they fruit flies? Did you leave anything out and it went off?
Hoovering for sure, old fashioned sticky fly paper, raid do ribbons and most effective is vinegar traps.

Get a small jar or container put malt vinegar in there and a small squirt of washing up liquid, put cling film tight over the top and poke a small hole in it. By the next morning it’s full of them.

What's a 'thunder fly' ? never heard that expression , or thrips

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/07/2019 12:52

They are a teeny tiny insect, they fly but v badly, they are usually plant pests. They can get into the tiniest of places - I had one get under the screen of a samsung tablet (where it of course died and was not removable!).

Hoover em up, wipe them up, check any houseplants as a source.

At least it’s not bed bugs. That’s one of my fears! Never had them but always panicking.
Last night I had one strange looking beetle crawling in the kitchen. I don’t have a garden so I carefully took him for a walk at 01:00 to a local allotment site and left him there.

Is it harvest season near you? You'll probably find they pretty much disappear in a week or so if so.
Yes, they are annoying, and do get in everywhere, but I've never found anything that's effective in getting rid of them because when they're around it's usually hot, so I couldn't close the windows.

mckerl · 30/07/2019 21:11

Hi definitely not fruit flys they are even smaller than that. We are literally right next to fields being harvested and they are so prolific that they are all over the windows of the houses in our street 🤢.
I know they are harmless and will go away but I swear my skin is crawling. I've had a good spray with a fly spray and kept hoovering them.
