Bunk Beds

Can I ask what ages you all feel appropriate for children sleeping in bunk beds? I.e. min ages for top and bottom bunks? Seeing varying advice/opinions!

The guidelines recommend minimum of 6 years old for top bunk.
My two were 5 (nearly 6) and 2.

They say 6 for a top bunk I believe. Bottom bunk could be any age that they’d otherwise be in a bed, but I suppose you’d have to be able to trust them not to climb up to the top.

Anyone put a 4yo in top bunk...?!

Avoid altogether. One of my classmates (in their early teens) died in a bunk bed accident. I'm not sure about the UK but in the US about 36,000 children annually attend hospital for bunk bed related injuries.

You’ll read lots of anecdotes about how people put 4 year olds in the top bunk and they were fine, but i cannot fathom this. We are considering bunk beds for when our boys are older but by then our eldest will be 7, minimum.

DS2 has had a bunk bed since he was 3. He and DS1 shared a room in our old house so bunks were the only option. We saved and bought a very expensive bunk bed with stairs and rails instead of a ladder which meant it wasn't requiring him to get up and down a ladder.

Don't do it. I remember having bunks as a kid. My younger sister was in the top. She was sick in her sleep in the night and I woke up absolutely covered in her vomit.

FreeButtonBee · 30/07/2019 14:02

I put my 4yo twins in bunks. They are fine.

Pinkout · 30/07/2019 14:03

Ahh bunk beds are fine. I slept on my cousin’s which had no guards on the top and fell out in my sleep when I was probably 6/7. I woke up screaming blue murder, my whole side was black and blue for weeks. Absolutely lethal. They all have guards now at the top so it’s perfectly safe.

I wouldn’t put a child under four on the top purely because they’re likely to try climbing over the guard...

Worth noting she also had wood flooring so it was an almighty crash and absolutely killed.
