Blackface is a disgusting thing to do.
The photo shoot picture - l see it as a nod to African-type inspired theme. Then do African Inspired! Style the hair, wear continent inspired jewellery items, use african cultured fabric designs. All fine, and done right, its tasteful.

Don't blackface the model. No need!
My skintone isn't a mask to apply and take off when convenient for others.

pepperpot99 · 28/07/2019 17:29

You should object to both, OP. I certainly do.

As for your twattish comment flashbac I'd be curious to hear your defense for the flag burning zealouts who are murderers of Christians and anyone else who objects to their medieval concept of Jihad and blasphemy. I think you'll find they are the racists. Or maybe you agree with them?

This is turning into "whatabout-ary".
What about vast numbers of Trump supporters who openly vilify and attack people of colour in america?
What about the unfair judiciary system in the states that systematically targets minorities every day, for decades?
What about the weekly deaths of UK women murdered by their spouses?
What about the shockingly high numbers of rape that happens in the UK to women and underage girls?
What about. What about. What about.

We're talking about blackface here, though.

Blackface is wrong & racist whichever country it comes from.

I have Pakistani friends who have made racist comments on occasions about darker skinned people & black people such as Obama in the media & I have called them out on it & they have apologised but I'm left feeling that such views are quite widespread in Pakistan.

In Pakistani culture pale skin & blue or green eyes are seen as the ultimate sign of beauty.
I don't know if it would even occur to the beauty industry there to use a black or darker skinned model even to portray African culture.

There are a lot of other issues going on in Pakistan at present, for example 1000s have been killed by the Pakistani Taliban & by ISIS but that doesn't mean that this issue should be ignored.

A lot of people from various Asian countries have the view that paler skin is somehow preferable- I don't know if it partly dates from colonial times?
It's sad that people can't just accept their own skin colour & the varying skin colours of others in the world.

crankyassnoperope · 28/07/2019 19:15

Black face isn't smearing your face in make up. It has ugly colonial roots. You must be in a position of privilege to be ignorant to this.

Well precisely. But the whole thing with blackface that makes it so offensive is the balance of power, and that it was used by the powerful to mock the oppressed. But I look at that model and I see a black (or at least brown) woman. Brown women have no power over black women. Brown women don't oppress black women. This make-up isn't to mock or ridicule those with darker skin.

So whilst it definitely is discriminatory to use a lighter skinned model rather than a model with a naturally darker skin tone (definitely, unequivocally not okay) I do think this is a different thing from blackface. It really does highlight though the pressure on black and brown women to have lighter skin tones, and shows how discrimination along the lines of how black you are really is a burgeoning problem.

Cranky, read my post, plenty of Asian women are racist about black African women (and men) or just anyone darker than them.

crankyassnoperope · 28/07/2019 19:28

Yes, I know that tierra, I don't get what point you're making?

RosesAndRaindrops · 28/07/2019 19:34

@crankyassnoperope
Yep, sounds about right! I mean FFS it isn't even a trans thread, fucking sick of it.
