JRM's style guide made me think about this. Top of my list would be "hun", followed closely by "Crimbo" and "hubby".

What words would you love never to have to read or hear again?

Iconic. Horribly and wilfully mis- and overused.

YaWeeGobshite · 28/07/2019 11:47

Listen up. As opposed to what, down?

soulrunner · 28/07/2019 11:49

intersectional
empower
leverage
capacity-build

Yes, I work in international development. I get to the end of programme descriptions and think "I have no idea what you actually do"

NoTheresa · 28/07/2019 11:52

Program used interchangeably with programme. Ok, you have to see that one in writing but still...

NoTheresa · 28/07/2019 11:53

Bifold

NoTheresa · 28/07/2019 12:03

Own it as in “...just own it”...

TodayNoMore · 28/07/2019 12:07

Staycation, just sounds ugly
Here on in instead of now on
On a daily/monthly/regular basis instead of every day/month/regularly
Call centre staff saying 'How may I help you' instead of 'How can I help you'.
Saying 'please speak to Jill and I' instead of 'Jill and me'
Uber friendly rather than very friendly

IrmaFayLear · 28/07/2019 12:18

At least you work in international development, soulrunner - you should see what my local council calls things!

Jobs available include:

personal assistant (careworker)
civil enforcement officer (traffic warden)
health & safety civil officer (pubic lavatory cleaner)

I know they want to big up some not-very-attractive jobs, but how on earth are people supposed to identify what the job actually is? Confused

NoTheresa · 28/07/2019 12:23

Some of the selected words amount to grammatical errors - another story altogether!

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 28/07/2019 12:34

Another vote for "boobing" and "boobed" here - in the context of breastfeeding. Hate it. However love the word "boob" in context of made a mistake.
"Impromptu" used to love the word. Overuse on social media has soiled it for me.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 28/07/2019 13:01

"What we are taking about is getting pissed off (not pissed) at Brits copying them. Do you really not understand the difference?"

A lot of these dreadful Americanisms complained about on here have always been commonly used in many parts of the UK though. They're not being "copied".

IceIceCoffee · 28/07/2019 13:02

Breast is best, and anyone that feels they need to give formula feeders the info for an “informed choice”

I know the nurtritional facts. I don’t need those pointing out it’s just the same smug phrases trotted out by the type of women who think that breastfeeding somehow gives them the right to go about educating other women on what to do with their breasts.

dayswithaY · 28/07/2019 13:04

Supper - so middle class
Banter - excuse for rudeness

anothernotherone · 28/07/2019 13:05

IceIceCoffee was that meant for the "what annoys you about MNers" thread?

anothernotherone · 28/07/2019 13:06

Leakinglikeacolander Blush Brew

ThighsRelief · 28/07/2019 13:23

Cabal, that's an overused word. It makes me literally murderous every time i see it written down. It's like a rallying cry fgs!

Everyone is a Moolay these days in the face of ever more absent Dodwells.

Wombleish · 28/07/2019 13:25

Very eloquently put Thigh.

ThighsRelief · 28/07/2019 13:28

Sigh womble i despair, it's such a big issue in lexiconisation.

I'm on my phone so can't see previous posts and can't remember who disliked "willy nilly". I think that's a perfectly fine expression with a long history.

It derives from "will he, nil he" meaning whether he wants/agrees to or whether it's against his will.

Now, it can either still mean that or can mean haphazardly.

MartiniDry don’t get excited, am not criticising the act of breastfeeding, just the expression ‘boobing’.
