To eat fish a day after its use by date if it's been frozen for three days previously

I thought Mumsnet may be the best place for this!

We're going to a big party this afternoon where there will be a lot of food. Overnight however, I defrosted four supermarket bought breaded fish fillets (sealed in plastic containers from the chilled section). I had bought them on Monday with a use by date of today, 27th and was planning on cooking them tonight.

My DH just reminded me that we usually arrive home from these parties at about 9pm all too stuffed to eat anything else!

Do you think if they've been frozen from Monday until Thursday evening then I can wait until Sunday evening to cook them? Or if not could I possibly put them back in the freezer and defrost Sunday morning to cook that evening?

Sorry this isn't a more interesting/salacious/hilarious thread! Smile

Don't put them back in the freezer! Leave them in the coldest part of your fridge until you cook them

Of course they're fine to eat tomorrow! I took some sausages out the freezer yesterday morning to bbq tonight. God knows when the sell by date is. They've been frozen so that's irrelevant!

You shouldn't refreeze after defrosting without cooking first. Normally once defrosted you should cook within 24 hours. Could you cook them today, put them in the fridge and then reheat tomorrow

BlueSuffragette · 27/07/2019 11:22

Yes agree. Don't freeze them again, just keep them in the fridge. They should be fine to eat tomorrow.

Phew, thank you for the replies so far SmileSmile

I'll put them in the vegetable drawer as that's probably the coolest, and eat tomorrow.

I absolutely hate wasting food and this has been bugging me all morning!

As others have said- just don’t refreeze. They will be fine tomorrow.

Passthecherrycoke · 27/07/2019 11:33

The whole point of freezing them is to extend their life so why would you pay any attention to the use by date? They’ll be fine!

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2019 11:35

They'll be absolutely fine, the time in the freezer effectively stopped the clock on them going off, they would probably have been fine even if you haven't frozen them, things dont' automatically go off at the stroke of midnight on the use by date.
