Very happy to wear

  • Linen trousers (great in this heat)
  • 50s dresses (when swing dancing)
  • Clothes from Toast. (Occasionally Boden too)
  • White cotton pants
  • Cardigans
  • Clothing of any colour. (Season dependent, to an extant. Bright colours often in combination with more neutral tones)
  • Polo necks

And me OP.

MN does me no favours at all because I spend ten minutes on it and come off feeling fat and unfashionable.

I don't wear a lot of colour - I wear a lot of colour but that's just personal choice I don't see anything wrong with it. I wear a lot of navy and someone said that was wrong the other day ffs.

I love a pair of dungarees, linen, Birkenstocks.

Only thing I agree with is the cold shoulder tops but I couldn't get worked up about someone else in one.

It makes me think I'm constantly being scrutinised as well when in reality I only notice what people are wearing if I think they look particularly nice or really bad.

Greyhound22 · 27/07/2019 07:37

That should just be 'don't wear a lot of colour' 🙄

Abhann · 27/07/2019 07:40

Of course not. Toast has had some gorgeous clothes down the years, and my hot weather work ‘uniform’ involves linen trousers.

malificent7 · 27/07/2019 07:41

I like prints...

Esto · 27/07/2019 07:44

I think S&B is good for inspiration and seeing different shapes/sizes/budgets but I always take it with a pinch of salt and just carry on wearing what I like and feel comfortable in.

Half the time the thread is saying they all hate something I love, half the time it's vice versa. Meh.

marvik · 27/07/2019 07:44

Prints are good too!

This is a happy thread....

Shit, your list basically describes me. What should I be wearing? (I'm over 40 and chunky).

picklemepopcorn · 27/07/2019 07:49

I love colour, and pattern, and unusual cuts.

I can't get excited about 'how to style these jeans' - obviously you'll need shoes which are comfortable, a bag that fits the stuff you need to take and a top which doesn't make your bum look big/leave you freezing/roasting. Simples.

lauryloo · 27/07/2019 08:01

I think you just described my wardrobe 😂

Lweji · 27/07/2019 08:07

You may be referring to a certain thread. Smile

I like many things on the lists and hate things that pps love on style threads.

So:
Corduroy
Polo necks
Cropped trousers
Móst colours

Linen trousers are just a sensible choice. Who can be against them?

stucknoue · 27/07/2019 08:11

Depends on your age, if like me you are closer to 50, they are our staples!

dayswithaY · 27/07/2019 08:21

I just came away from that thread as too many people said they hate leopard print and make up - which could be my code name. I do find those threads so annoying as basically people just repeat the same items - cold shoulder tops, high heels, Uggs, Crocs. If you can't add something new don't post! I know it's light hearted but who cares what other people think of your clothes? It's all about how you wear it, some people look good in anything.

DippyAvocado · 27/07/2019 08:23

I have a couple of pairs of linen trousers. They're very comfy bit I think what I and others dislike about them is the creasing!

DameSquashalot · 27/07/2019 08:25

I like leggings with skirts, bright tights, linen trousers, Birkenstocks etc

I'm very unfashionable. It's probably more an indication of the age range on here.

Morgan12 · 27/07/2019 08:25

I have a cold shoulder dress.

And two tops.

Oh, and a jumper.

I like cold shoulder Blush

woodhill · 27/07/2019 08:25

I wear linen trousers and naff sandals with fastenings as they fit my feet lol

Patterns and colour

Dinosforall · 27/07/2019 08:35

Well, YANBU, obviously. Looking around it's clear those items are pretty popular.

Everything is on someone's banned list. That's why I don't understand posters who are put out when people name stuff they love.

RedSheep73 · 27/07/2019 08:37

Are all those things banned then? I woukdn't wear polo necks, but that's because I can't bear things round my throat. Otherwise I'll where what the hell I want.

lljkk · 27/07/2019 08:37

I wear bright colours that may not match. I'm happy.

High heels have always been ugly (to my eyes).
If I have to put up with high heels visually everywhere, others can tolerate my mismatched bright colours.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/07/2019 08:39

From your list, I personally find Boden overpriced for very dull clothes and 50s dresses a bit ‘Look at me, I’m so endearingly quirky’. But I don’t have to wear them and you don’t have to stop because I and others don’t like them! There’s no one style that suits or appeals to everyone.

To quote Kitty from Victoria Wood, ‘If we were all the same, we'd have smaller shopping centres’.

Sceptre86 · 27/07/2019 08:42

I like bright colours, linen pants are a must for holidays but I can't wear polo necks ( feel claustrophobic).

Lovestonap · 27/07/2019 08:42

I like those lists precisely because so many different things are listed and it reassures me we're all different. People should keep it personal to them though, and not state blanket rules like 'dungarees are for children'. Actually dungarees or overalls were originally highly practical work garments and I think they look awesome on whoever wants to wear them.

I sorted out my wardrobe yesterday and it's basically awash with floral and bird/animal prints. It brings me joy to see them all hanging up. I know some people don't like them, but that's OK because it means they leave them for me to discover in the charity shop :)

woodhill · 27/07/2019 08:45

Yes don't like polo or high necks as I feel like I'm being strangled

Lweji · 27/07/2019 08:46

But those are things that people personally wouldn't wear.
It doesn't mean that nobody should wear them.
(Except that there's too much animal print and camouflage in the shops atm) (and nobody will be wearing mustard yellow next year)

I also have a couple of fleeces. Not something I go to work in but they are warm and practical. Who cares what you wear to the supermarket or go on a day out with family?

marvik · 27/07/2019 08:48

I think there is also something about clothes which have a certain kind of functionality.

Linen is a very cooling fabric to wear in hot weather,

Boiler suits are great for when I'm doing DIY.

Some clothes are good for dancing, because a skirt that flares out will accentuate particular moves.

Some trainers - not all by any means - are great for running or walking on rough ground.

So it's about what you do in clothes - and the environment in which they're worn.

We're not dolls. We're active human beings.
