Are we being un reasonable?

Partners niece (brothers daughter) is called Riley and we want to call our daughter Mylie-Grace.

No one owns a name, but it is very very similar.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 27/07/2019 00:51

It is similar however it wouldn't bother me personally if I were in their situation.

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 27/07/2019 01:33

Isn't it Miley (as in Cyrus)? In which case it is incredibly similar Riley and Miley

FreddiesMammy · 27/07/2019 01:35

It is similar, ask them how they feel about it. What is the age difference between the children?

CalmdownJanet · 27/07/2019 01:39

I mean as far as mn goes "nobody owns a name" but it is a bit matchy for my liking so while yanbu really there are thousands of girls names so I'd rather find something not so ... well. ..matchy (for want of a better word)

DramaAlpaca · 27/07/2019 01:39

Riley & Mylie? Well, I don't share your taste in names, that's for sure. But if you want a name that rhymes with a cousin, that's up to you.

Elle2019 · 27/07/2019 01:40

They might take it as a compliment. Ask Smile

NoSauce · 27/07/2019 03:57

No chance. Riley is dreadful. I’d go for something a million miles away from it in your shoes OP.

Malyshek · 27/07/2019 07:26

Are you going to call her Mylie or Grace or Mylie-Grace in everyday life ?

Is this the only name you like, or are there other names you're considering ?

If it's the only name you both agree on and you really love it, I'd go for it. I'd give your in-laws a heads-up too (not as "is it ok?" just as a courteous "just so you know we've decided x").

Malyshek · 27/07/2019 07:27

Also if you always use her full name it's not quite as similar.

wizzler · 27/07/2019 07:30

Depends partly on how close you are as a family. If you see them once a year than it would be ok. If you spend every weekend with them I might think again.

CupoTeap · 27/07/2019 07:41

There not sisters so it doesn't matter

Gruzinkerbell1 · 27/07/2019 07:42

Do you see them very often?

GeorgiaGirl52 · 27/07/2019 07:55

I wouldn't name a child after Miley Cyrus but thousands have, so go for it!

MadamWaffle · 27/07/2019 08:12

It's not even her name; it was her nickname!

daisypond · 27/07/2019 08:18

I don’t think it matters. It’s only the first part of the name that is similar.

Cheeserton · 27/07/2019 08:24

Definitely not to my taste either, any of these names. But yes, very similar. At the very least you could expect raised eyebrows.

Username9641 · 27/07/2019 08:28

If you do use Miley it's probably best to spell it the normal way or she'll spend her whole life correcting people or spelling it out for them which gets v annoying and there's no reason for a weird spelling.

You could call her Grace and use Miley as a middle name?

Lindellia · 27/07/2019 08:28

Please don’t. Not because it’s too similar to Riley - because it’s awful.

Lindellia · 27/07/2019 08:29

Just call her Grace - it’s a classic name that could take her into any walk of life.

Gatepost1820 · 27/07/2019 08:29

Mylie will date very quickly in my opinion, it's this generation's version of Sharon & Tracy. Miley, Riley and Kylie are all similar and don't age well imo.

Grace on the other hand is a timeless and elegant name which will age well as your daughter grows in to an adult. If you're really set on Miley then how about Grace Miley without the hyphen so you've got options.

Cheeserton · 27/07/2019 08:37

Alas I suspect it won't meet the wannabe-cutesy-American hyphenated style desired, à la Ella-Mae, etc.

Everything you said was damn right though Gatepost.

x2boys · 27/07/2019 08:50

Not keen on either name personally but I have a very similar name to one of my cousins , I have a "70,s" double barrel name so along the lines of "Sarah-Jane " and my cousin "Jane" ( not actual names) and it's never been an issue .but we did only see each other a few times a year.

icecreamsundae32 · 27/07/2019 09:03

I know cousins called Ella & Bella (Isabella but known as Bella) so it's no different

BlueSuffragette · 27/07/2019 09:04

Too similar. Why not call her Grace and use Mylie as a middle name?
