MiL - DD and FilL’s birthdays

It’s DD’s birthday tomorrow. She’s horse mad so for her present we’ve got her tickets to a major show jumping thing tomorrow. I got the tickets yonks ago when they first came out

She’s also been taking part in a jumping competition over the last few weeks - its a series thing - you have to get clear rounds at certain heights in X amount of events in the series to qualify for the final event which is on Sunday.

It’s FiL’s 70th Birthday the middle of August. A few weeks ago MiL messaged me to say she’d spoken to DH’s siblings and they’d decided we were all going away for a weekend to celebrate as a surprise for FiL, somewhere nice with a spa and a nice restaurant - the only date they could all do was this weekend.

DH rang her, explained our plans and suggested we meet up for the big dinner on the Saturday night as the showjumping thing wasn’t a million miles away from where they were staying (which is a couple of hours away from our house) but we couldn’t stay the night as we had to be out super early on the Sunday morning

MiL kicked off massively - called DD spoiled, that FiL was ‘more important’ and all sorts. DH dealt with it and that was that

She rang last night and started having a go as soon as I picked up the phone (DH was out) what time are we getting there, we need to get there by 4pm at the latest, how dare we not stay the night at the hotel, we were ruining everything, it was FiL’s 70th and that was more important, etc, etc

WIBU to stick to my guns? FiL is lovely and it is his 70th, but then DD is very excited about tomorrow and has been working towards Sunday for weeks

Horses are really good for assisting all sorts of disabilities. MH or otherwise.
I hope your dd has a lovely weekend and your MIL is being a silly old woman x

Happy birthday to your dd Cake

How’s it going op? Hope dd had the most amazing day and the mil behaved herself

My family have form for this too.

I’ll text or call and say ‘when can I drop in and see you this weekend to give you your birthday present/mother’s day gift etc?’

And the reply will be ‘oh, everyone else is coming on Sunday at 5pm’... or ‘oh, come now, everyone else is already here’

Because my siblings are favoured and get communicated with in advance. And then I get short shift when I can’t just drop everything and travel 40 minutes right that second.

Thanks all!

DD had a fab time on Saturday. Dinner was OK in the end and DD had a cake and a fuss made of her for her birthday too.

MiL kept phoning on the Saturday, DH dealt with her the first time, then we just ignored it. She made a few digs when we got there but mostly behaved. FiL was just pleased to see us all

DD did really well today - didn’t win but got a rosette for taking part and getting through to the final event - she’s well happy with herself

Am utterly knackered now though

Well done DD that sounds a lovely day.

Hope MIL provided the cake Grin

MiL is deranged. She chose to organise FiL's surprise for the only date they could all do was this weekend. in the full knowledge that "all" those people did not include you, who had already booked your horse show & juming event weekend.

You are going out of your way on the already busy weekend of your daughter's own birthday celebration to make sure you are present at FiL's meal.

If MiL goes off at you again, explain that the double-booking is her responsibility, not yours, & that you have no intention of disappointing your DD.

I suspect from her subsequent batshit phone call that she thought that she could simply ignore the fact that you are NOT in free for the specified weekend, book it on the dates she wanted anyway & then simply steamroller you into compliance. Sod that. Don't back down, & happy horsing around :)

Whatever else you do make sure that your FIL is aware of why you can't be there for the whole weekend, he would probably be furious about the trouble his wife's causing.
I know that we wouldn't expect our grandchildren to miss an important sporting event, or any other event, because of a birthday.

I'm glad she had a lovely weekend @Songofsixpence. Congrats on dd getting the the final. I used to be a competitive rider and so i know how exciting that is.
Pleased to hear that FIL's celebration went smoothly.
