To ask how to monitor DS phone use?

He is almost 12 and goes away with scouts for a week tmw.

Hes never had a phone but we are giving him an old one to keep in touch while hes away (just for the trip).

But we want to keep him safe online, so AIBU to ask

  1. what the best and easiest way to put strong parental control on a PAYG phone?

  2. please recommend an app that will allow us to monitor his phone use

Anything else I've missed?

We will tell him we are doing this.

In case its relevant, it's an apple phone linked to my DH phone and it's clear to apple hes under 13.

Thanks all

Not sure on the apps. But when my son did scouts it. Was a no technology thing. That's the idea of being out with nature.

You don’t need an app. I’m settings there is a thing called screen time. You can set limits on there.

Is he actually allowed to take a phone? My DC have never been allowed phones for cub, scout or school trips. Kind of completely goes against the point of being outside and active does it not?
I would check if I was you.

Sky Broadband Buddy!
We are currently doing the Mumsnet Product trial with it & it's amazing.
Can pause the internet, allow or disallow websites and apps, check history, brilliant,
Def worth looking into!

I doubt he’ll have time to get in touch with you, and every Cub/Scout group I’ve known have said no technology as they won’t want to be responsible for loss/theft/kids being daft with how they’re using it. I wouldn’t send him with a phone if I were you - my 2 will be going away with Scouts in October and they won’t be taking one.

Thanks everyone.
He has been away with scouts several times and never taken one, but this Is a whole week and so weve okayed it.

Sadly on all the other trips some kids had phones .

I'd just like any wisdom on how to keep it safe.
