Forced to spend 2 hours throwing a ball about, asking each other stupid questions and assembling a puzzle by describing pieces to each other on the HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR!! Oh, and then asked to discuss what I learned from the experience etc.

Part of me sure (and sort of hopes!) it's a practical joke and will be on YouTube soon !

Yeh, ok I was paid for it, but not as much as the consultant leading the godforsaken task.

AIBU to be completely dumbfounded that anybody in the world still thinks this nonsense makes anyone better at anything, let alone be stupid enough to pay someone for it!

YANBU. I’m chairing anew meeting in a few weeks where most people won’t know each other. My assistant asked if I wanted her to find some ice breaker games. I politely declined. I’d rather cut my own leg off!

That sounds hideous. I'm glad I've retrained. Its meaningless corporate BS: the work bitching & backstabbing will continue. The worst I had was stand up & tell the room how you can be a better employee, just after the bosses were done for serious financial fraud & bad practice etc. One manager refused to stand up "as we're not at school' then pointed out it wasn't us lot that broke financial law so why were on a team building 'refresher' was a moot point . Remember, theres no 'I' in team, but there is a 'me'. And most offices dynamics are just the playground 30yrs on.

ForalltheSaints · 25/07/2019 19:01

Any day of the year it is awful.

We had a thread about corporate away days a week or so ago. I advocated that any company doing this idiocy should be required to report it alongside their annual accounts. The transparency would probably end such nonsense.

ParmaViolet44 · 25/07/2019 19:03

Oh God no, some of my most dreadful, earth-swallow-me-up, cringeworthy memories are of stupid fucking corporate "team-building" shite.

rOsie80 · 25/07/2019 20:08

I'm still not sure it wasn't all just a bad dream. Along with boris becoming PM. Must be the heat...

The team would have bonded much better if someone said 'Fuck this let's go to the pub' I'll wager...

Moomin12345 · 25/07/2019 20:11

I've made the horrible mistake of going to one of those recently. Never again!

ScreamingValenta · 25/07/2019 20:11

Yes, yes and thrice yes!

Are you actually in The Office rebooted? Check for hidden cameras...

From a pre covid world....maybe it put a stop it....down with that type of thing

I once had to endure a THREE DAY course on Time Management. Incredibly boring and could have been condensed into less than a day, but the consultants were clearly charging per day.

newnortherner111 · 09/07/2021 13:51

Zombie thread, but if the pandemic has put a stop to such nonsense, so much the better.

The idea of having to declare such in an annual report does sound appealing, I can imagine the press stories if anyone dared to continue with such nonsense.

In the last two years more recognition has been made of hidden disabilities and neurodiversity, which I hope has helped put a stop to such nonsense as well.

mogsrus · 09/07/2021 16:22

forced into these horrible things every year,& as yet never understood what if anything ,is actually being achieved, apart from getting paid, the companies seem to think they are great, how wrong can they be, the last one was over 2 days, absolute agony.must admit the only bit i really enjoyed was the 2 lies 1 truth bit, that s quite a good game, the rest is boredom personified.

Biker47 · 09/07/2021 16:42

ZOMBIE THREAD.

Last one I went to, we had to build a tower using paper, tape and string, to support an egg at the top, complete and utter waste of time, brought to you by the same managers who genuinely think that we go to work for the fun of it, and not for the monetary compensation.

I hope covid has killed these off for good, hopefully the companies who perpetuate this crap and made a living off of it were the first to go under. Sorry; not sorry. Hopefully they've found new; more fulfilling employment now though.
