And how many of you are there?

I made a lemon loaf style cake this evening (We're in Oz) and it was all gone in less than an hour.

There's DH and I and DD aged 15 and DD aged 11!

Gone!

I know a loaf style cake isn't enormous but still!

Gone in a sitting. That’s why I make loads

DropZoneOne · 25/07/2019 18:24

A 1lb loaf cake? That's only 8 slices, we're 2 adults and an 11 year old locust here - DD would have eaten half before DH even realised there was cake.

Bourbonbiccy · 25/07/2019 20:09

I don't understand the "it's too hot to bake" comments.

But cake doesn't last 2 minutes as I eat cake like it's going out of fashion lol

(If anyone has a good chocolate cake recipe, I would love one )

Bourbon in the fairness of hot cooking, much above 30C, and butter doesn't really behave properly, leading to spreading biscuits, and disastrous butter icing!
When I lived in "forrin" parts, and the house was cooled to 26C, my bread and yeast cooking was fabulous tho. Maybe we should all be doing sweet yeast bakery this week?

Bourbonbiccy · 25/07/2019 21:12

RainOrSun thanks for the explanation, I thought people were meaning just to hot to be near the oven or the effort of baking 😳😳😳😳

RainOrSun · 25/07/2019 21:21

I think they probably are! But the butter was my biggest issue. There was no way I wasnt cooking for 10 months of the year!! weve had roast chicken tonight, perhaps I'm not the right one to ask!

SeaSidePebbles · 25/07/2019 21:27

I’m forrin, I bake every Sunday ( or Saturday if we’re out on Sunday).
4 pm on Sundays is coffee and cake here, I make a loaf or a tray.
It lasts 2-3 days, on average. It’s 3 of us, plus whatever guests we might have.
And I never use butter, always oil.

ChikiTIKI · 25/07/2019 21:45

Me and my DH have many times got through a batch of Nigella's everyday brownies in 2 days. It makes 16 large brownies...

jellybaby1 · 25/07/2019 23:26

6 of us, so a cake lasts about 20 minutes Grin

RosesAndRaindrops · 25/07/2019 23:29

Lasts less than a day here (me, DH, 2 kids)
Or slightly longer if I hide it and ration it Grin harsh

nokidshere · 25/07/2019 23:42

About 20mins if we are lucky Hmm teenage boys are like locusts

Sceptre86 · 26/07/2019 07:01

It would last us a couple of days as our two would probably not have full slices. With dh's family over it would finish in a sitting.

Kalim8 · 26/07/2019 07:30

Whenever the kids clamour to make cakes, they don't eat them!
Made a tray bake with one, she enjoyed decorating it but then nobody ate it so I made my way through it over several days, sick of the sight of it by the end.

JammieCodger · 26/07/2019 07:54

2 adults and 2 teenage girls. Cakes last a few days here.

cleofatra · 26/07/2019 07:58

I'm the same OP. I don't bake as it just goes within an hour here.

OtraCosaMariposa · 26/07/2019 07:59

A day maybe. If I've baked in the afternoon they'll demolish half after dinner, then the rest will disappear into school lunch boxes and for after school snacks

Depends what kind of cake though, I'm particularly fond of coffee and walnut but the others aren't as keen so it lasts longer - and I get more!

bumblingbovine49 · 26/07/2019 08:22

I never bake at all any more. I don't really enjoy it. I do however LOVE cake. When I have made things in the past, it depends
what it is

Muffins, sponge, flapjacks etc - I just end up eating them all after the first day ( another reason not to bake as I am obese)

Blondies, brownies, disappearr before they have complete cooled

There is only 2 adults and one teenager here Blush

I don't have a sweet tooth but think the cake needs a little more sugar

Enjoy xx
