Vegan drinking Whey (milk) Protein ... but refuses Vegan 'sausage' roll that was brushed with milk (out of habit) before baking

Just wondered as 1 little sausage roll has caused a HUGE family upset :(

My stance is ... if he had not been using the whey product I would have backed him up 100%... as I have been preparing food for him respecting his 100% commitment.

He sees vegetarians as flawed for still eating eggs and dairy.

His argument is the Whey product he bought before turning vegan and was therefore a waste to throw away.

My argument is... he could have took the top layer of pastry off rather than upset his grandma...

I repeat that if he was not consuming WHEY I would not expect him to have even done that... but seems he's more keen on not wasting the money he spent on his whey.

Me, if I were vegan, I would not knowingly break from it

The way I see it if he eats ANY dairy he IS a VEGITARIAN

@bellajay “ut I’m a fairly new veggie and I have slipped up a few times by not checking labels etc. Does that mean I have to accept any and all non-veggie products made and given to me because they were just trying to be nice?”

No, but you can’t go “I can’t eat that bacon roll I’m veggie! and then tuck into a sausage sandwich because you’re using up the rest of the 30 pack of frozen sausages you’d brought....”

Otherwise that means you’re not veggie...

And in the OPs example, the man could have just removed the top layer of pastry and eaten it....

....so nobody was actually expecting him to eat non-vegan food....

He was just being a twat

Spot on!

Is he vegan for ethical reasons? If so then how does he feel about food waste? He is quite happy for a sausage roll to go in the bin, perfectly good food going to waste because he is being a dick.

I'd be tempted to find some steak at the back of the freezer and ask him to eat it because you have already bought it.

@00100001 I agree, I’ve already said I didn’t really intend that as a direct parallel to the OPs situation. As I said in my post, I think the main point is whether the sausage roll was refused politely, you can’t get angry with someone who politely refuses something you made for any reason but you can be annoyed if they are rude to you about it.

I maintain that the OPs son isn’t obliged to consume some milk because he is separately using up a box of smoothie powder. If his gran put milk in his tea would he have to drink it? If she gave him a glass of milk out of habit because that’s what he always used to drink at her house?

But if you’re rude to your gran over a sausage roll, you’re probably being unreasonable, whether you’re a vegan, a pregan or a veggie.

I honestly can't see what the fuss was about. Adult is a tad hypocritical and was rude to his gran. That's on him to sort out. He's leaving tomorrow, give your collective heads a wobble and don't let a 99p hyper-processed pastry product spoil your last day together.

Hidingwhoiam · 26/07/2019 09:11

It's not smoothie powder. It's a product made from mill. Cows milk.

Which means he isnt a vegan and it's the exact same product put on top of the sausage roll. He refused on the basis that as a vegan he doesnt eat milk. Then went home and made a product made from milk.

Mrsjayy · 26/07/2019 09:25

God he sounds exhausting i would be telling to stop being such a pretentious arsehole and sort out his own faddy eating, not that I think being vegan is faddy

bellajay · 26/07/2019 09:31

@Hidingwhoiam yes I understand that the powder has milk in it. His grounds for refusal don’t matter. He doesn’t have to eat anything he doesn’t want to. He does however have some moral obligation to be respectful to others, and especially his family.
