Just about to go to bed and my smoke alarms start going off!

I jump up panicked but there's no smoke (thank god) I can't turn them off so I remember back to that time I was doing some intense spring cleaning and they started going off then and i was unable to turn them back off. Turns out some dust had gotten into them so they just needed a quick vacuum (advice from repairs lady)

So I run around vacuuming the smoke alarms and trying to silence them but it's not working.. so here I am waiting for some emergency repair guy to come and turn them off.. at 2am with a (still sleeping..) 4 year old in bed.

I live in a quiet area and my neighbours are gonna be thinking wtf!!

I've had to open the doors and windows because apparently it can be to do with humidity too! Who knew!!

🙄

Oh no! At least you can get an person to repair at this time of night. I thought you’d have to go all Phoebe on it. I take it’s wired into the electrics?

Withnailandaye · 25/07/2019 02:15

Ha! My first though was phoebe too! Grin

Yep wired to the mains.. I switched those off but they keep bleating out! Guess it's a safety thing.
Been on about half an hour now!

so they’re actually going off like there’s a fire?

Mine are wired in but when the battery goes they bleep loudly every 20 seconds or something.

lavenderbluedilly · 25/07/2019 02:47

I think I’d be turning the electricity off while awaiting for the emergency guy to arrive! Unless you have a load of food in your fridge or freezer

Withnailandaye · 25/07/2019 02:57

I have turned the power off at the mains but they won't stop going off.
He rang just before and won't be here until after 3am.. I have to be up at 7 for work 😭

Do they have a battery back up? I think they might and that will be what they are powering off of. Trying pulling one down (you slightly twist them if they are the larger older types) and have a look.. if so, pull the battery out and unplug it.

crazycurry · 25/07/2019 03:03

They have battery backup so they keep going if a fire cuts the electrics. I'd be getting an electrician to check your wiring asap.

Withnailandaye · 25/07/2019 03:23

Well the guys here and there was a fault with one of them so it was setting them all off! Hes busy fitting a new one.

Dd is still asleep! 😮 I even checked on her to make sure she was ok and she's all curled up sound asleep.

So she slept through 3 smoke alarms going off for almost 2 hours yet if I even so much as flush a toilet during the night she wakes up 🤣 typical!

Wow that's really interesting wang and terrifying! Sad

She has no idea about what went on last night, she's well rested and full of beans so definitely didn't even stir. Me on the other hand.. 3 hours sleep and I feel shocking!

That's a real eye opener though so in a way I'm glad I've learnt that if there ever was a fire (heaven forbid), I know it's not certain the alarm to wake her Sad
