Builders fucking radio

springydaff · 24/07/2019 11:02

As if all the grinding and banging and digging and clanging isn't bad enough - fair enough, part of the build - it's the bloody radio that is a total assault.

Surely there should be a fucking law against it. Noise or something.

AIBU?

Are they your builders? You could accidentally spill tea on it as you are taking out their elevensies, or you could loudly sing along to every record - regardless of whether you know the words, or - and I'm being radical here - you could ask them to turn it down?

user1491678180 · 24/07/2019 11:07

Ask them to turn it down! Confused

Spiderpants · 24/07/2019 11:12

Just ask them to turn it down or off?????

springydaff · 24/07/2019 11:18

No not my builders. I'd like it OFF permanently and forever.

Hahaha, this reminds me - DH was working from home recently and says our neighbours' builder's music was driving him mad as they kept playing Peter Andre's 'Mysterious Girl' on repeat Grin

IAskTooManyQuestions · 24/07/2019 11:46

Can you not ASK ?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 24/07/2019 11:46

Yep pretty unreasonable, don't they normally just put it on a station and leave it. Its not like they are choosing the music and to be honest surely a radio station playing music is a damn sight better to listen to than just the noise of the building work.

LolaSmiles · 24/07/2019 11:48

As long as it's not too loud, I can't get annoyed by it. I find it bizarre seeing how many people are bothered by a desire for total silence at all times on MN (and I'm someone who is quiet outside).

Just ask them to turn it down. It's what I've done if someone's music is a bit loud.

springydaff · 24/07/2019 11:50

Would it be reasonable to ask for no radio ever? Off for good?

Don't want to jeopardise relationship with neighbours who are absolutely lovely. But revolting neighbours other side with equally revolting builders put me through hell with endless fucking screamy thumpy radio. Police involvement in the end I'm afraid to say - being reasonable just didn't work.

So instead of saying "please turn it down" I could say "please turn it off"?

In an ideal world, they would wear headphones but Elf n Safety if theyre on a site? Feel your pain, currently on a beach in Spain where the fad is to wear a bluetooth speaker strapped to ones shoulder playing the loudest French rap....throwing ciggy butts on the beach an optional extra. Am enjoying myself despite this 😎.

PineappleSeahorse · 24/07/2019 11:52

No that wouldn't be reasonable. Turn it down yes, turn it off isn't fair.

springydaff · 24/07/2019 11:54

Why not Pineapple?

user1491678180 · 24/07/2019 11:56

I agree with @PineappleSeahorsepple. They should not have to turn it off. Turning it down is fine.

Why do you think they should turn it OFF @springydaff ??? Confused

ClaudiaWankleman · 24/07/2019 11:56

It wouldn’t be reasonable because it’s normal to hear noise (of any sort) at this time of day. Turn down, not turn off.

Sandybval · 24/07/2019 11:57

In this heat the builders next door have been starting really early, which makes sense as its probably safer to not be out in the blazing midday heat doing manual labour; I don't mind the noise that much as it can't be helped but the radio on at 530am is very, very annoying! I asked them if they would mind popping it on a bit later (around 8 or 9ish seemed reasonable) but they said no. So I was petty and turned the water supply off to the outside tap we have which we said they could use for mixing cement etc (not on a meter at the moment). They had the nerve to say was I going to get anyone out to sort it as they must have assumed it was broken, I said unless the music is a bit later and a more reasonable volume then nooe.

Sandybval · 24/07/2019 11:57

Nope*

PineappleSeahorse · 24/07/2019 11:57

Because it's boring as hell to work without music and so long as it's a reasonable volume I don't see why they can't have it on. They aren't your builders and as far as I'm aware there's no law about playing music at a reasonable volume during the day. I hate noise myself and love quiet but I still think it's not unreasonable for people to them to have music on during the day or for people to mow their lawn after 7(Another thing that Mumsnetters seem to detest)

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 24/07/2019 12:00

Why not Pineapple?

I cant see why you don't understand why its unreasonable to make them turn it off. It is the middle of the day and noise is to be expected when you have neighbours. Anyone of your neighbours could put the radio on and open the windows and that would be fine it just so happens the ones doing so in this situation are builders. Its normal everyday noise so yes it would be unreasonable to make them turn it off.

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 24/07/2019 12:01

of course YANBU!

Since when is it acceptable to have blaring music disturbing the neighbourhood? The radio is the worst, not only you have to put up with the shitty music but the adverts and presenters mumbling in the background..

It drives me nuts too, and yes, there should be a law against it.

Most of us manage to work without disturbing anyone else - building noise is unavoidable, fine at legal hours, but the rest is just rude.

Why should the local residents have to go and speak with the builders? It should be obvious to keep the noise to a minimum. A ban won't arrive soon enough.

PineappleSeahorse · 24/07/2019 12:01

5:30 is ridiculous though. That's definitely not ok. I'd be positively murderous, Sandybval. Good on you for taking action.

optimisticpessimist01 · 24/07/2019 12:02

Aww it does bother me but I don't say anything to them about it. Builders have a tough job working outdoors in all types of weather, if a bit of music lifts their day a bit then just let them do it.

I know it is annoying but imagine having to be working early hours in the morning in this ridiculous heat, let them have their radio, or maybe just ask them to turn it down rather than completely off

Ellieboolou27 · 24/07/2019 12:02

Turn it down yes, turn it off is rude, builders opposite mine with god awful rap music but it's not so loud I can hear it inside.

Sandybval · 24/07/2019 12:03

@PineappleSeahorse especially as it wakes my baby up! But the neighbours are lovely and they're build is way behind where it should be so I don't mind being as amicable as possible to avoid holding things up for them- but gah! They apologised but they're tied into them now, thankfully seems to be nearly finished so fingers crossed.

Sandybval · 24/07/2019 12:04

LolaSmiles · 24/07/2019 12:04

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone
Exactly!
Some noise in the middle of the day is totally reasonable (only on MN do people feel entitled to have total silence, report people eating their tea outside, consider lawnmowers or garden tools a nuisance, think children should simultaneously play in their garden and make no noise, log any socialising with 101).
