Builders fucking radio

springydaff · 24/07/2019 11:02

As if all the grinding and banging and digging and clanging isn't bad enough - fair enough, part of the build - it's the bloody radio that is a total assault.

Surely there should be a fucking law against it. Noise or something.

AIBU?

Since when is it acceptable to have blaring music disturbing the neighbourhood?

Its not blaring music its a radio playing music like radios were designed for. I do love how melodramatic some posters can get. Hmm

Scotinoz · 24/07/2019 12:06

Asking them to turn it off isn't unreasonable, but it's not unreasonable of them to say no.

If it's builders working in a domestic situation, 'no radios' won't be stipulated anywhere in their contract. So they're within their rights to have it on.

If it's obscenely loud, baring explicit lyrics etc then its one thing, but standard radio is okay.

bigbluebus · 24/07/2019 12:11

I wouldn't hesitate to ask them politely to turn it down - and have done with neighbouring builders. I am also very quick to pull them up on bad language (when every other word is an F word and is being yelled from the rooftop).

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 24/07/2019 12:16

Tbh I wish my neighbours’ builders would turn their radio up. That way I might not be able to hear their constant swearing. Angry

CatOnASwing · 24/07/2019 12:20

I hate this - unavoidable noise, like the work itself, traffic noise, even the noise of DC playing (within reason) are fine.

Its just so selfish and thoughtless to then add additional non-essential noise into the mix too.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/07/2019 12:25

We have the kitchen radio on pretty much constantly at the moment - I’m off for summer (teacher) and pottering in and out of the garden with the back door left open so the cat can come and go. If one of my neighbours politely asked me to turn it down, I would, although it’s not generally loud - if they asked me to turn it off I would say no. I think radio during the day is “normal noise”.

springydaff · 24/07/2019 12:27

Sandy, those builders sound like the revolting builders I had next door for over a year - ignorant pigs. Nothing for it but the local bobby in the end.

Makes sense to start early eg 5.30am but actually not legal. So the homeowner should - technically - meet the bill of reduced hours, therefore longer build, due to the weather. Is it a domestic build next door? Fucking cheek whatever way.

ahem, yes, if you can hear music with your windows close, then it's "blaring" or excessively loud if you prefer. It's not melodramatic to point out that it's completely out of order.

No one else behaves that way, and working is not an excuse. Most of us have to work and manage to do so without disturbing or pissing off everybody else.

Its not blaring music its a radio playing music

It IS blaring music! It's technically a radio but actually a box thing with unending volume and bass that thumps through my own radio. In my own house. Next to my own head.

The meter reader knocked on my door and I said "is that loud?" and he said YES. You have to ask complete strangers in the end because it just drives you so insane you lose your wits.

I cant see anywhere the Op suggests her windows are closed. I would imagine like most of the country today they are open because its warm. There's no indication that this music is blaring it sounds like its at a normal every day volume but audible because of its proximity to the OPs house.

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 24/07/2019 12:43

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone

Most of the country has their windows closed to keep the heat out during the hottest hours of the day.

If your neighbours can hear your noise, it's too loud. Simple.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 24/07/2019 12:44

Always a drip feed. The problem you had originally was that they had the radio on and you hate the noise of the radio. You mentioned nothing about it being excessively loud or blaring. If it loud then ask them to turn it down but I stand by my point that a normal radio playing music is not an unreasonable noise.

springydaff · 24/07/2019 12:44

Op here: WRONG Heads.

NOT everyday volume.

OP posts:
PineappleSeahorse · 24/07/2019 12:45

That's why some of us are saying it's ok to ask them to turn it down but OTT to ask them to turn it off.

Scotinoz · 24/07/2019 12:46

Half 5 is an unacceptable start time in residential work. Generally speaking, standard hours are usually half 7 until 6.

Speak to your local authority if they're excessively noisy.

Again, generally speaking, the guidance is to be reasonable. Speak to them and ask them to keep it down - plant/work on site can be noisy though. Unfortunately, its just something you have to suck up. If the radio is loud, swearing etc, then speak to them about the problem.

If nothing comes of it, then speak to the local authority - if it's an extension or something then it's like permitted development so it's Noise Pollution (or whatever they naught be called in your area).

Going in all guns blazing gets nowhere. Being reasonable is the key, but it goes both ways.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 24/07/2019 12:47

NOT everyday volume.

Yes I concede I'm wrong, its hard to be right when you don't actually mention that its the volume you had a problem with.

springydaff · 24/07/2019 12:49

Well I look forward to you having builders next door with one of those music box things Head. They all have them - they are builders radios. Nothing dripping about that but perhaps ignorant on your part re builders radios.

It's probably my husband.

It's fucking annoying isn't it?

He has a Dewalt one and I can't stand the bastard thing. There's absolutely no need for that much base. It sounds horrific.

He's a builder and also uses it at work.
I'm just fucking glad it's not at home.

Except we are doing building work on our house soon, and guess who's doing it?
☹️

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 24/07/2019 12:53

They all have them...perhaps ignorant on your part re builders radios.

We had builders in completing work last week they didn't have a builders radio they had a bog standard radio that was battery operated no different from ones seen in houses up and down the UK. So excuse my ignorance but its clear that not all builders have such radios.

OW98765 · 24/07/2019 12:55

It’s probably a Mikita radio so yes they are loud. My partner has one to listen to while he works (he’s not a builderGrin)

It’s during the day. They are entitled to listen to the radio. Ask them to turn it down. Not off.

WarmSausageTea · 24/07/2019 12:56

Clearly you’ve made up your mind that YANBU, which you’re entitled to do.

What you’re not entitled to is silence. I agree that blaring music is inconsiderate and anti-social, but really, if you can’t be bothered to try a reasonable request to turn the music down to a moderate level, you’ll have to put up with it.

Chocolatehat · 24/07/2019 12:57

Completely agree with you OP. They are building houses behind our house and we cannot use the garden because the builders blaring radio drives us insane.

Geminijes · 24/07/2019 12:58

I don't believe any builders will start work at 5.30am and have their radio blaring at that time. All the neighbours would be complaining if that was the case.

You could, politely, ask the builders to turn the radio down but you would be unreasonable to expect them to turn if off.

Why should your need for no noise trump their need for music?

springydaff · 24/07/2019 13:04

What sweet little builders you had then Head. Very oldy fash.

Blaring inane music is a form of torture used by governments. It was how they tried to flush out the Waco crowd.

Of course I've spoken to them! Nicely, kindly, friendly. I'm not an idiot.

Sicario · 24/07/2019 13:06

My builders did this - proper builder's radio tuned to Absolute Drivel and blaring out. Grumpy Man neighbour came stomping along and told them to turn it down. Builders told him to fuck off. I didn't intervene because Grumpy Man lets his dog shit everywhere and never picks it up.
