LUSH Products - waste of money or great?

coffeeforone · 24/07/2019 08:37

So I've never really used any of their products, except on particular cream for baby's eczema. I was stocking up yesterday and had a little browse at their other products and got chatting to the salesperson.

Ended up buying Shampoo/conditioning Bar, facial primer/oil bar and a soap bar.
I'm pretty excited about them as they seem to have a few massive advantages re reducing plastic use and travel liquid problems. Used them this morning and am pretty impressed!
DH however is not impressed and thinks I've just been 'sold' a few overpriced soap bars that I would never buy normally. I do have a tendency to be a bit gullible like this and have made my fair share of wasted purchases! But this time I'm hopeful I've proved him wrong and I'll convert to no plastic/solid alternatives. Any views from those who have more experience of Lush products? AIBU in thinking they will be an excellent replacement?

Their anti police campaign was also launched on the anniversary of the Westminster bridge attacks where a policeman was killed.

#flushlush - and I say that as soneone who used to buy loads of their sttuff

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 24/07/2019 17:37

Their Buffy the backside slayer is the best gentle scrub ever and it leaves your skin so soft and moisturized. I’m not in the UK so I don’t know much about their anti police policies but must read up. Im shocked

JamOnTheCarpet · 24/07/2019 17:40

I do like their bar shampoos (but the conditioner bars are useless), and the bars of soap for using in the shower do smell good.
Quite a bit more expensive than plain supermarket soap though, so I don't tend to buy very regularly, and always try to avoid the really heavily scented, glitter filled stuff.

Ohyesiam · 24/07/2019 17:41

I’ve never managed to get past thenasty smell coming out of the shop, so can’t say about the products. Smells itchy though.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/07/2019 17:44

Waste of money for me. Everytime I've gone into their shop the smell has given me a headache.

ChocOrCheese · 24/07/2019 17:46

I feel the need for a gas mask when walking past one of their shops. I certainly wouldn't stink out my house with the stuff.

GoldenKelpie · 24/07/2019 17:55

I used to pop in every time I visited my nearest city to buy the bath bombs (dragon egg my fave) however my wages have not kept pace with their increases in prices and I can no longer justify such a huge increase for the sake of one bath.

zurigirl · 24/07/2019 17:57

I love Lush! But I'm quite choosy about what I buy from there since it's so expensive...

I really rate the shampoo bars! Have been using them on and off since 2011 and recently discovered the honey-scented one - which is amazing for my hair as it's long and usually tangles really easily. Now that I've started using this product I can even get away with not using any conditioner / detangling spray if there's none available. (I'm not too mad about the solid conditioner though, bought the Daddy O one at the same time and it doesn't seem to do much)

Also a big fan of the dry shampoo, although I'm hesitant to buy it again because I do think you could probably make it at home just with cornflour and a couple of other bits... so I'd like to try that first before buying it again. It's also trickier to use than the spray ones, but does a good job once you get the hang of it and lasts WAY longer.

I don't really buy the soaps, bath bombs, skin care from there anymore... just not convinced they're worth it price-wise. I did love Ultrabland while I was using it though! As well as Ocean Salt, Rub Rub Rub, the black body scrub (sorry, can't remember the name).

Aside from the solid and dry shampoo, I do also quite like the toothy tabs (although they discontinued the clove one I used to use back when they came in matchbox-style packaging!) and the powder deodorant. My boyfriend loves the solid shampoo and also Daddy O shampoo. Also recently discovered the massage bar with the azuki beans in, which is very good!

To sum up... I think they have great stuff, but I wouldn't be replacing all my toiletries with things from there, really only the things that I would benefit from or the occasional treat. Zero waste is a great cause but there are other (cheaper) places that also make zero-waste products.

By the way! I've generally found if you ask for a sample of a product so you can see what you think before you buy, they're normally more than willing to do that! Smile (well, doesn't work for shampoo bars etc., but ok for anything liquidy or toothy tabs)

Sorry for the essay but I hope that helps! Smile

Thebatswhiskers · 24/07/2019 18:15

@BathshebaKnickerStickers Can I ask what shampoo your daughter uses that helps the greasy hair please? My hair is acting like it's a teenager again and I've tried so many things but hadn't considered going back to Lush, it's been years..

Cosentyx · 24/07/2019 18:18

Waste of money

Neron · 24/07/2019 18:23

I adore the cup o coffee scrub, love that stuff and it lasts a while. I'm also a natural curly and their curly wurly shampoo is great, but I've got a ton of thick hair so the tub doesn't last long. I don't buy much in there as it's so expensive and I can get other natural products cheaper, so I get the above things as a treat to me

Iambuffy · 24/07/2019 18:27

The prices now are insane!
£17 for 50ml of cleanser?
Nope.
I remember buying bath bombs not so long ago for £1.95.
Their moisturiaer used to be under £10. I liked the imperialis one.
And the perfumes are rank
^ I say that as someone who loves perfume

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 24/07/2019 18:38

I really thought I'd return to this thread for a pasting after my post. Really good to see so many share the same view.

My problem isn't that they took on the issue, which is a truly awful story and appalling and it did need publicity.

It was the way they did it, the way it made out that our entire police force is corrupt, the timing - being the anniversary of the Westminster attacks and coming after an intense time with the Manchester bomb and Grenfell but also the fact that he hid behind his low paid staff who faced abuse from irate members of the public, he let them take the fall for his desire to promote his brand (which he clearly considered as important as giving the original story publicity)

Owlbert · 24/07/2019 18:39

I really like some of their products but I think what it comes down to is everyone's skin/hair is different so if you find something that works and you love it then it's not a waste of money and you should stick with it!

Bezalelle · 24/07/2019 18:44

I buy their stuff just because I admire their stance on Spy-cops.

Alsohuman · 24/07/2019 18:49

I think i’m probably alone in this but if they could bottle the smell of the shops, I’d buy it.

Iambuffy · 24/07/2019 18:52

And what about the "kiss me" promo???
Only young attractive employees need apply...some of those poor girls had lipstick kisses all over their breasts...
Disgusting.
The stuff isn't even that eco friendly!

glasshalfsomething · 24/07/2019 18:53

Their soaps are horrid, and I wouldn’t consider anything with glitter in it. However, their shampoo bars are fantastic!

Iambuffy · 24/07/2019 18:53

Some of you should check out the staff fb page...

MartiniDry · 24/07/2019 18:58

I'm a huge fan of Lush. For products, I love their Rose Jam, Daddy-O gel, and Pink Fun although I'm disappointed that I can only buy Pink Fun online now.

I love that the ingredients are vegetarian or vegan and appreciate almost all the campaigns they support, including the so-called "anti police" one which was badly executed but raised important issues.

Thank you for bringing Lush to mind, OP. I've had a horrible time over the past few weeks and had decided to treat myself but didn't know how.
I now feel a visit to the Lush website coming on!

lotusbell · 24/07/2019 19:16

Used them for a long time but not so much these days as they've really hiked prices up.i have to travel to my nearest one and I resent the 3.95 postage charge for online orders. DS12 is partial to an Avobath though and I get him one occasionally to use at his grandads as we no longer have a bath. I do love their innovation, not so keen on their politics and being force fed their views. Also dont like their pushy shop assistants who are too in your face.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 24/07/2019 19:34

I love some of their products:

Ceridwen's Cauldron - Rich moisturising oatmilky bath melt that is wrapped in a muslin cloth, also has roes and sandalwood in too

No Doubt - Dry Shampoo lasts for ages and was great for my daughters greasy prone hair between washes. Also great for putting in freshly washed hair that you want to heat style as it gives it a bit of grip.

Buffy (the backside slayer) - A hybrid of an exfoliating scrub bar and a moisturising body butter, great for using on holiday to prolong your tan and in winter to get rid of dry skin.

Cosmetic Warrior - Fresh face mask for sensitive spot prone skin. Stinks to high heaven and has to be kept in the fridge.

Don't like the bath bombs - too strong smelling and glittery.

MitziK · 24/07/2019 20:00

I boycott them. They're anti-police and pro-hunt saboteurs

Anti-men employed to fuck women on the basis that they'll trust them with their deepest fears, beliefs and legal campaigning and then disappear without a word and against foxes being ripped to pieces for entertainment?

That's why I make a point of buying from them.

Ceridwen's Cauldron is the nicest bath. Calmed down both mine and DP's Psoriasis when everything else had failed and smelled wonderful.

(Once every three months is all I can afford, but it's bloody worth it).

clarissa469 · 24/07/2019 20:07

I use the sleepy cream on my myself and my baby every night after a bath. Swear it works wonders

bee222 · 24/07/2019 20:37

You boycott people that try to stop foxes being ripped to shreds for fun?
