to buy a pregnancy test when I have the coil?

I’ve recently had a complete aversion to tea and coffee which happened with my other two pregnancies. And a craving for white bread and butter, something I never eat. But I have the coil (non hormone) and I really don’t think I’ve missed a period - I’m bad at tracking them. I did have a bug at the beginning of last week which could be the aversion? I’m guessing I’m asking aibu to buy a test or is it so unlikely I should wait until I’m inevitably get my next period!

If you’re early enough to have not missed a period then you’re probably too early to have cravings and aversions like that. If it’s been 6 weeks plus since your last period then buy a test.

Malyshek · 23/07/2019 19:52

Tests are cheap. Buy one so you can stop worrying about this.

RockyRolly · 23/07/2019 19:56

Yeah do one but when I have a bug I always go off tea straight away and it takes me a few days to go back to it (I dont drink coffee) and I always want a basic bit of bread and butter after feeling rough. So it could just be a bug. When I'm pregnant I always crave citrus stuff 🤷‍♀️

Do it! I was told to test asap if you have you any slight suspicion you might be pregnant with a coil. This is because there is a higher risk of eptopic pregnancy and it needs checking for positioning as soon as possible.

Missmonkeypenny · 23/07/2019 20:08

DD is the product of the coil Grin I tested every other month anyway as I didn’t have periods with mine and was worried about falling pregnant and not knowing but it was a shock when it was positive!

HillyBilly1001 · 23/07/2019 20:09

Thank you all. I think I’ll get one, I just thought it was so unlikely.

Is it definitely still there? Mine fell out after 2 + years and DC3 I was the result ShockSmile

HillyBilly1001 · 23/07/2019 20:14

How do I know!!

Legend says my cousin was born holding the coil. Not sure how true it is as I wasn't there.

lyralalala · 23/07/2019 20:23

Buy a test. I go pregnant on the coil. It’s unusual but it does happen

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 23/07/2019 20:25

I've got a couple of packs from Poundland I'm despite having the coil fitted. It's always good to have peace of mind!

Malyshek · 23/07/2019 20:27

Yeah my sister in law got pregnant on the coil.

Twice.

It does happen.

ellendegeneres · 23/07/2019 20:28

I fell pregnant with the mirena, twice.
It’s why they’ve sterilised me now 🙈

GnomeDePlume · 23/07/2019 20:29

Test.

DD2 was born practically clutching my copper coil. It didn't fall out, it just didn't work. I delayed testing because I didn't think I could be pregnant. Pregnancy confirmed by scan at just shy of 18 weeks.

TripleASays · 23/07/2019 20:32

I'd test, OP. I got pregnant with the coil in place.

Ninkaninus · 23/07/2019 20:32

If it’s in there you should be able to feel the threads. You’re supposed to check regularly as they can fall out or become displaced...

It’s also possible to get pregnant with it in situ (although it is rare).

I’d take a test just to allay your suspicions. If you are pregnant I’d see your GP, as soon as you can just to get checked over as there is a slightly increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.

NaviSprite · 23/07/2019 20:38

I got pregnant with my twins when I still had the coil. My periods were/are erratic at best so didn’t notice until the morning sickness kicked in 😳

Not saying the coil had anything to do with twins btw, they run in my family 😊

HillyBilly1001 · 23/07/2019 20:41

I can’t believe how many people have got pregnant with the coil - I really had no idea it was this common?? I though less than 1%! Off to buy a test now. Oh god...

OP posts:
Ninkaninus · 23/07/2019 20:46

It is a ^very* reliable contraception, but there will always be that 1%. I’ve had a copper coil (well, two) for 20 years and not had any issues.

snackarella · 23/07/2019 21:40

Have you done it yet 😂

Outnotdown · 23/07/2019 21:46

Jeeeezus. I have a mirena (no periods) and I just thought to myself today, I haven't been this exhausted since I was pregnant Shock

I'm gonna have to poas just to put my mind at ease too. Good luck op

Highfivemum · 23/07/2019 21:50

You must let us know the result of the test. 😳

HillyBilly1001 · 23/07/2019 22:26

It’s negative. Bought a 2 pack so I can test straight away next time!
