Traffic Warden

Mummyto2munchkins · 23/07/2019 17:29

Today on my walk home from work there was 2 traffic wardens having a look at the cars / issuing tickets.
A few shop owners came out and started giving them a mouthful, along the lines of "get a decent job" was "you can't issue a ticket without a hat on. You can't do your Job without a hat" then a few minutes later the bloke said "it's the same as police. They can't arrest you without a hat on"
Hmm AIBU thinking these people are a bit batshit? Seriously... They can't do anything without a hat?! How bizarre!

Where I live they wear riot gear (those helmets with the see through visor) to issue tickets...

Tableclothing · 23/07/2019 17:45

True story: I once returned to my car to find the warden issuing a ticket. I apologised for overstaying. He then cancelled the ticket because apparently "it's a bit of a rule we have, that if they come back and they're nice, we let them off."

Pipandmum · 23/07/2019 17:49

I thought Once they start writing it
can’t be cancelled.

BeanBag7 · 23/07/2019 17:51

Obviously the hat thing is bollocks. I dont understand the shop owners approach here, if I saw that there is no way I would be going in their shop. People are just doing their jobs, if they have an issue with it they should speak to the council or who ever owns the spaces.

Thurmanmurman · 23/07/2019 18:03

I’ve had a traffic warden let me off as well, when I was running late and my ticket had expired. I hate the way some people think it’s fine to abuse traffic wardens who are only doing their job and paying their taxes like the rest of us.

taylorowmu · 23/07/2019 18:09

Of course the police can arrest you without a hat on Confused

What on earth were they talking about?

Mummyto2munchkins · 23/07/2019 18:24

I honestly have not got a clue what they was on about! I was so confused.. I did have a chuckle to myself about how ridiculous they sounded though, there was a few people recording them and everything.

The traffic wardens walked off away from the conflict and I heard the male sale to the female "I'm not having them talk to you like that it's best we just walk away"

I think what's happened is that you've seen in person the type of people who share viral fake stories, or "This child's doctor says if this post gets 1 million shares the child can recieve cancer treatment" posts on social media.

chickengirl77 · 23/07/2019 18:41

Actually the hat thing for wardens was right, here the uniforms have changed but when my bil was a warden,he had to wear his hat when he gave a ticket.

Bunnybigears · 23/07/2019 18:47

My DH used to be a traffic warden, they has to wear 'full uniform' when issuing a ticket so that meant they had to put their hat on. I dont think anyone ever had a ticket cancelled because the traffic warden want wearing a hat but it was certainly a rule that the managers were very serious about. He was also verbally abused daily, physically abused every few days and deliberately run over breaking 5 bones! The traffic wardens did right to walk away.

Laiste · 23/07/2019 18:58

So ... if you can get to them in time to flick the hat off before they start writing, it will buy you time to drive off while they scramble for it .... No? Grin

Dad1000 · 24/07/2019 08:00

Good posts. Some people are just....well. downright ridiculous!

By the way...sorry to be a killjoy but...there "were" two traffic wardens.. and 'what they "were" on about.'

Come on peeps, at least show you have a reasonable command of your own language 😑

Way back in 2002 we find the loophole that is the root of this idiocy!

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2181052.stm

And CEOs too are told to wear the uniform all the time

www.unity-recruitment.co.uk/blog/blog/parking/civil-enforcement-officers-faq

I saw a few yesterday with their hats attacched to their belts, still visible... I should have followed one, see if he put it n when issuing a ticket!

Mummyto2munchkins · 24/07/2019 08:19

Dad100 in this weather you really don't care how quick you type. It's a forum. Not an English exam.

The shopowners WBU to shout like that, but their concern is probably either that they have nowhere else to park (in which case a ticket is a cost of doing business, IMO) or that it puts off their customers (which is a very real problem in some towns)

Cheeserton · 24/07/2019 08:22

Idiots like this generally find out that the hat thing is bollocks when it's way too late, as they're being dragged into a cell bleating about how the Police can't do what they're doing anyway...

taylorowmu · 24/07/2019 08:24

I'm laughing at the fact that this is the only part of your post to make sense Grin

Greeve · 24/07/2019 08:32

I think police officers used to wear a hat to show they were "on duty" but I'm talking years and years ago.

Buster72 · 24/07/2019 08:42

The hat thing, for police, is a nonsense. It stems from a cop stopping a vehicle in uniform but without his hat on. Driver claimed that he was stopped unlawfully as the officer was not in full uniform. Judge threw it out of court.

VeganCow · 24/07/2019 08:48

I have also had one let me off, he had his machine out and had taken photos but hadnt started typing yet.
I had another tell me I could park where I shouldn't to drop some keys off, as long as I 'just move up a bit'.

AuntyMarysBigRedPants · 24/07/2019 08:54

@Womanager bloody hell, where do you live ?

Dad1000 · 24/07/2019 08:59

Yep I guess so.

Sorry... Not trying to be clever. I get a bit peed off when I see poor use of English. And people criticise immigrants for "taking jobs" etc etc but at least they speak better English than the ones shouting their mouths off.
No fingers being pointed here by the way.....this is a debate for another time 🙂

Controversially yours....

StillMedusa · 24/07/2019 09:00

I was a traffic warden..(for a short while..it bored me) last year, and no we did not have to wear hats . The men often did... women tended not to (as they were not stylish!)
As long as the TW is wearing their number on their uniform.. yep we could book you.
PS I was a nice one... it's a necessary job to keep towns moving and safe!

I'm not sure we are reading the same thread!

Have you posted on here by mistake?

Dad1000 · 24/07/2019 09:46

Nope....just got carried away 😶
Ok...I'm off.
