To ask how you are keeping your house cool in this heat

ER1992 · 23/07/2019 14:41

I live in a mid terrace house which holds the heat well in cooler temperatures so in the current heat it is ridiculously hot.
I have a 9 month old who's bedroom thermometer is currently reading at 28 degrees. Has anyone got any tips on how I can cool this down before his bedtime?
I have kept the curtains shut all day with the window open and have just set a fan going for the afternoon

Keep the window closed until the outside temperature is cooler than inside!

Siennabear · 23/07/2019 14:43

Freeze some bottles of water and put them in his bedroom , in front of the fan if you can. Stay in and sit in front of a fan with as little clothes as possible!

EssentialHummus · 23/07/2019 14:45

Yy to frozen water in his room.

lpchill · 23/07/2019 14:47

We opened the opposite windows so DD at the front of the house and ours at the back of the house. Created a lovely cool breeze but only works if there is a sight breeze outside.

WonderTweek · 23/07/2019 14:47

My husband is talking about getting an air cooler but I'm not sure if it's very environmentally friendly and it seems like it only cools down a very small area, e.g. just one room, so maybe not great for the whole house?

I would like some tips too as I'm currently sat here in a 28 degree house with the windows ever so slightly open as it's the sodding flying ant day and the buggers are everywhere. Angry

The obvious tips are to avoid cooking in the oven and turning stuff off. Our TV gets stupidly hot so it's been banned today.

It’s 30 in my living room at the minute- french doors open at both ends of the lounge and fan on and it’s still boiling!

loobyloo1234 · 23/07/2019 14:48

All curtains closed and windows shut until it has cooled outside

gingerbreadsprinkle · 23/07/2019 14:49

We got an electrician to install ceiling fans for about £100. We bought the fans from B&Q. If we keep all the windows open, with fans on, it's not too bad.

Stoptheworldpleasethankyou · 23/07/2019 14:49

All curtains closed and windows each end of the house open so let the tiny breeze though. It’s working my livingroom is a good temperature just don’t go to the back of the house the sun is on it all day long.

bellabasset · 23/07/2019 14:50

I used to work in a converted loft space and it was perishing in the winter and baking in the summer. I used to hang a wet towel over the window and it cooled the room considerably.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 23/07/2019 14:50

Place a bowl of iced water in front of a grill fan (this will help to circulate cold air) and keep the blinds closed to keep sunlight out.

LoafOfSellotape · 23/07/2019 14:51

Windows and curtains drawn and fan on. Bearable, just.

Will either sleep on the sofa tonight or do what we did last night which was sleep with the ceiling fan on.

LuckyAmy1986 · 23/07/2019 14:51

Close the window!!

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/07/2019 14:52

We have ceiling fans.

Rainbowknickers · 23/07/2019 14:52

Keep curtains closed
Lay a wet out-of-the-washer-wet towel over a chair
Frozen bottles in front of the fan
I used to put mine down with just a sheet for a blanket

Mitebiteatnite · 23/07/2019 14:54

I've opened the loft hatch upstairs so all the warm air will rise up there. It was almost painful opening the shed earlier and seeing our air con unit in there. DH needs a hand getting it up the stairs and I just don't physically have the strength. If it gets much hotter I'm considering putting an ad on Facebook for a very strong person to come and help him.

OrangeJustice · 23/07/2019 14:54

Windows and curtains closed.

Fans on.

I’d love to get ceiling fans installed but that’d be the end of warm summers for the next decade. Like the year I splashed out on winter tyres and we didn’t have a single flake of snow for four years.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 23/07/2019 14:54

I have air conditioning in my bedroom and my workshop. We had it installed 3 years ago when I was going through chemo. To balance that, I hate being warm and tend to only have the heating on for 3 months during the winter

BrexitChimp · 23/07/2019 14:55

Its 24 in my lounge, (North West) I have a fan on and the curtains closed. Have a shower, rub some lotion on and stand in front of fan, bliss

munemema · 23/07/2019 14:56

Curtains closed until the sun has passed over that window.

The sun rises at the front of my house so the front curtains are drawn until mid dayish. The back ones stay closed all day when it's very hot, except the kitchen, where we have an outdoor canopy to keep the sun off that window.

shieldmaidenofrohan · 23/07/2019 14:57

All the windows are open plus the back door which gives a decent breeze as we are quite high up. We don't have curtains anyway and minimal furniture/fabric which I believe helps to keep the house cool

mamakoukla · 23/07/2019 14:59

Fill the bath with a few inches of cold water and stay in it for a bit. When DD was young, we would do this throughout the day (think of it as an indoor paddling pool). Especially before bedtime to cool down. Light and minimal clothing. Don’t rush about to do things

SweetpeaMidnight · 23/07/2019 15:00

I tried the keeping windows shut malarkey and my house was definitely not any cooler. We have a glass front door and white paper over it helps keep the heat out

gingerbreadsprinkle · 23/07/2019 15:03

I think people are confusing windows shut with curtains shut. I definitely agree with keeping the sun out via curtains, but you need the air to circulate through open windows.

VirginiaCreeper · 23/07/2019 15:04

Fans don't make a room any cooler, they merely make you feel cooler. By moving air over your skin, a fan can lower your body temperature, but will do nothing for the heat inside a room. So if you're not in the room, you're just wasting energy by leaving the fan on in fact the heat generated by the fan may just make the room warmer.
I live in a house with attic bedrooms. It's currently 35C upstairs. I have a mobile air conditioner which will cool my bedroom down in no time.
I would adore ceiling fans but our ceilings are so low they would decapitate someone.

OP Once the sun passes over open the windows. Put the fan at the foot of the bed or cot so it wafts over the baby but not directly in his face.
