To ask how you are keeping your house cool in this heat

I live in a mid terrace house which holds the heat well in cooler temperatures so in the current heat it is ridiculously hot.
I have a 9 month old who's bedroom thermometer is currently reading at 28 degrees. Has anyone got any tips on how I can cool this down before his bedtime?
I have kept the curtains shut all day with the window open and have just set a fan going for the afternoon

I live in Scotland. What is a heatwave?! Grin
Jokes aside, I did notice the rain was warmer last night... !

Skyejuly · 24/07/2019 16:50

I actually want to move to scotland.

AngeloMysterioso · 24/07/2019 18:24

The room temperature has still got up to 29 degrees

29? Pah!! I will see that and raise you...

That was just over an hour ago, before I fled to the park for some air and shade. It’s probably even hotter now. Won’t go back below 30 til about midnight.

Waveysnail · 24/07/2019 18:26

I have all windows and doors open. Lovely breeze. All internal doors wedged open too

ER1992 · 24/07/2019 18:35

Angelo soz didn't realise it was a competition. All I know is its too hot for my 9 month old to sleep 🤔

I wasn’t having a dig, no need to be so sensitive...

And I’m 7 months pregnant so it’s not fun and games for me either!

Out house is cool, cold in winter. It doesn't warm up until evenings when the sun comes out from behind the house

MashedSpud · 24/07/2019 19:58

31c in here at the moment. We have the window closed and two fans running.

theorchidwhisperer · 24/07/2019 20:03

Invested in thermally lined curtains and blinds. Keeping them shut. It really works, mimicking the dark ancient houses in the southern Mediterranean.

BirdandSparrow · 24/07/2019 20:25

Yeah, you need it shut and dark. Just the windows shut doesn't make enough difference. Sweating away in 38º c here in Spain, but more used to it than you guys. At 930 pm it's just cool enough to go out now, have just opened all the windows.

SophieJo · 24/07/2019 20:33

I am using a plant mister full of cold water. Will be using it at night time as it really helps when you spray your face with it!

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/07/2019 08:30

It's on radio 4 now...

JaceLancs · 25/07/2019 08:54

Curtains closed but windows open
I put fan on a few hours before I go to bed
Water mist sprayer
Very jealous of DS today as his boss has given all their department day off today as it’s supposed to be so hot!

thecatsthecats · 25/07/2019 09:13

If you have a conservatory, DO open the door.

Ours easily gets to 40 degrees with the door closed, it's better to have the door open so the inside temperature can't build up.

SoupInTheLaundryBag · 25/07/2019 09:51

The problem with ice cooled cheaper air conditioning units is they are really only good for as long as it takes the ice to melt, which in this weather isn't very long.

Vented portable units are best, I have a 5BTU homebase one I bought last year. It's in the corner of the bedroom and the pipe vents out through the window. Bedroom is a blissful 16 degrees.
It was £200 but after the heatwave last year and so many restless nights it fast became my best ever purchase.
It's also a dehumidifier so we use it in the spare room over winter.

You'd have to prise it from my very cold dead hands Grin
