To ask how you are keeping your house cool in this heat

ER1992 · 23/07/2019 14:41

I live in a mid terrace house which holds the heat well in cooler temperatures so in the current heat it is ridiculously hot.
I have a 9 month old who's bedroom thermometer is currently reading at 28 degrees. Has anyone got any tips on how I can cool this down before his bedtime?
I have kept the curtains shut all day with the window open and have just set a fan going for the afternoon

Windows and blinds closed in the day

Evening time get every window open and prop open all doors to give a nice through breeze

Haven't needed the fans yet but might do tonight!

SilverySurfer · 23/07/2019 17:39

I treated myself to one of these: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000RPITLA/ref=pe_1572281_66412651_cm_rv_eml_rv0_dp?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 It kept me cool all through last summer and doing the same this year. It's very powerful and I have never needed to put it on max.

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 23/07/2019 17:42

1900 mid terrace here, nothing posh and it's blissfully cool inside. Blackout curtains and windows open helps!

BirdandSparrow · 23/07/2019 17:43

I live in southern Spain and it's currently 39 degrees. We have no aircon. We keep all windows and curtains/blinds shut all day, from early on. Then, once it's cool (not until about 930 pm) we open everything and leave it open all night. The aim is to keep the hot air out. There is no such thing as a cool breeze past about 35 degrees

BirdandSparrow · 23/07/2019 17:45

It means you keep the cool night air in and keep the hot daytime air out.

paap1975 · 23/07/2019 18:22

40C outside, 25C inside (just checked). We let cool air in at night (windows open) and keep hot air out during the day (windows closed). If you've let your house warm up it will take several days to correct. Our attic room is real hot, but we keep the door closed until we go up and open the windows, so the heat stays in there.

Crinkle77 · 23/07/2019 18:35

It stops the hot air coming in. It's not dark either, our windows are transparent.

People said they are have all their curtains closed. I just don't want to shut out the summer. We don't see enough as it is. And as for keeping the windows shut during the day and opening them at night well I'm still not convinced. I can't stand it is there is no air circulating. There has been a nice breeze here today and by opening all the windows it allows the air to circulate.

imarocketman50 · 23/07/2019 18:36

I have a medium and large industrial fans. Use the medium one all year round but this week I may roll the large one out. Probably powerful enough to blow me off the bed lol!

herculepoirot2 · 23/07/2019 18:36

Heat rises so top windows open a notch. Curtains closed. Doors closed.

BirdandSparrow · 23/07/2019 19:27

There has been a nice breeze here today and by opening all the windows it allows the air to circulate. well then it's not that hot. In hot countries (like where I am, it's 39 degrees) there isn't a "nice breeze", there's just super heated air that's so hot you feel like you can't breathe. So, you keep the cool night air in during the day and then open everything in the evening and it all circulates at night, when there is some chance of a cool breeze. I've been here for 20 years, average summer temperatures are as high as 43 degrees. It works.

BirdandSparrow · 23/07/2019 19:28

If you let the hot air in then your house is the same temperature as outside.

YesQueen · 23/07/2019 20:02

My dad has been and bought an AC unit. I'm very jealous
It went "I'm buying one. We are not repeating the nights of 1976"
Family chant in unison "the summer dad slept in the garden for a week" GrinGrin

YesQueen · 23/07/2019 20:05

I came home today and it was boiling outside. All windows in my house were shut during the day and blinds down. Remarkable difference, so much cooler inside than out

PixieLumos · 23/07/2019 20:05

Use this opportunity to wash your curtains - when you hang them back up wet it will cool the rooms right down.

Skyejuly · 23/07/2019 21:34

Those of you in 3storey town houses and loft rooms...are you managing to sleep in the loft rooms?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/07/2019 21:40

I have the curtains in the bedroom drawn and it's not even dark there, downstairs is shaded by the trees.Love my trees.

It would be boiling otherwise.

icannotremember · 23/07/2019 21:42

Ours is a mid terrace too but it is a cold house. In winter it's a bugger to get warm, in summer it only really gets hot upstairs and even then it's not unbearable. I bloody hate being cold so I hate my house most of the year! It comes into it's own in the heat though.

Beechview · 23/07/2019 21:49

I hate hot nights. I can never sleep. We’re all having quick cool showers before bed, windows open, desktop fan in each room. Fingers crossed.

Beechview · 23/07/2019 21:52

It’s actually lovely in the garden. Would love to sleep there like YesQueens dad.

YesQueen · 23/07/2019 22:07

@Beechview I'm too young but apparently during the very hot summer which he reminds me of every year he sat up in bed, went "fuck this" and marched outside with his pillow Grin
I did actually see my neighbours sleeping on the balcony last year

FreeToRun · 23/07/2019 22:35

These heat events are becoming more common and are due to climate change.

StCharlotte · 24/07/2019 00:01

Our house is fairly cool downstairs (Victorian mid-terrace). Warmer upstairs. We're out all day so for security windows are closed and bedroom curtains drawn. Upstairs windows open at bedtime plus desktop fan in bedroom.

ER1992 · 24/07/2019 16:26

Well I can confirm that leaving the windows shit has not made a blind bit of difference, in fact it has been worse and have felt sweaty, clamy and like I was going to pass out a few times. The room temperature has still got up to 29 degrees and as soon as I did open the windows the gentle breeze came through the house i felt a lot better although still hot. And before anyone says it must be cooler outside than in, definitely not its currently 34 degrees outside

I keep thinking this, it definitely seems the norm in the summer now doesn't it?

Howdidido · 24/07/2019 16:45

Put sheets in freezer before bed?
