To ask why on Earth my crockery cupboard STINKS of soil?

I have lived in this house for about three years now with the same kitchen. I bought a new crockery set in December. About three ish months ago I noticed I faint smell of soil on my plates and in the crockery cupboard.

I have taken everything out and washed out the cupboard and re-washed all of the things from the cupboard. After a clean out the smell is gone for maybe two days and then it starts to come back and about a week later it is really strong. The plates smell very strongly and the smell transfers to your hands straight away. We have to give everything from that cupboard a good wash before using, a rinse won’t do and we have to wash our hands too throughly too.

There’s no dampness in the cupboard. What on earth could it be? Are the plates producing this awful smell?

It smells like fresh soil from the garden.

Please help !

I'd at a guess mould of some sort.

Have you tried leaving the crockery out and putting something else in overnight and seeing if that smells?

If not then I'd have one last try of soaking the whole set in bleached water, in the bath or something, and see if that sorts it, or contact the manufacturer and see if it is a bad batch.

I have a similar problem with some ceramic oven dishes. The whole base is unglazed and I think it can absorb water. This then seems to go stale and musty in the cupboard. I have found if I wash them but don't let them soak in water and then let them dry thoroughly before stacking in the cupboard they are ok.

It is damp either your shelf hasn't dried properly or something wash it again and dry with kitchen and leave your door opened to air dry.

Do they smell of wet dog?

If so, do you use a dishwasher? If you do, I suggest your waste water pipe needs flushing by putting it on a hot wash, empty, with some disinfectant in.

We don’t have a dishwasher.

It is DP that does the washing up, so I’m thinking things aren’t getting dry properly before they are put away ?

It’s not wet dog , it is pure soil. Awful !

I think you need to clear out the cupboard put a skoosh of bleach in thevwashing up water let it dry out over a few days check there is no dots of mould in the corners and rewash the dishes and leave them to airdry too.

Thanks all

I’m going to give it another good clean out with bleach and leave it empty for a couple of days to see if any mould forms.

Also, will speak to DP again about the drying up.
