Husband tried to 'soak' the toastie maker in the sink

Is it broken?
Is there any hope?
I just had a massive go at him to being stupid enough to put an electrical appliance in the sink- it has a plug!

He is upset that i had a go at him but now I either have to get a new one or go without.

Aibu for having a go? He was trying to help....

What a twat 🤣

Morgan12 · 21/07/2019 20:52

I used to wash my George foreman in the sink BlushBlushBlush

I thought it was ok because it wasn't plugged in. Thankfully I haven't done this for years and never will again 😂

Cheeserton · 21/07/2019 20:55

I genuinely LOVE the voting system. 6% think soaking a sandwich toaster in its entirety is fine. Grin

Sparklesocks · 21/07/2019 20:56

Oh god!! I’m sorry OP that is pretty funny, and no I don’t think it’s likely to be ok I’m afraid!!

Jupiter13 · 21/07/2019 21:07

Was it still plugged in.😂😂

cyclingwith3 · 21/07/2019 21:16

It’s possibly fine, no short circuits as no current.

If it can be opened do, otherwise you just need to ensure it’s really really dry again before trying. If though it was soapy it the water wasn’t clean there will be residue and I wouldn’t go there

SquishedPheasant · 21/07/2019 21:42

My DP did this with the george foreman whole thing in the washing bowl I went scatty with him 😂 it did however strangely work fine after the good soak, the DP is still as lazy as ever and now dismissed from dishes duty maybe that was his plan all along Haha!

Fakenametodayhey · 21/07/2019 21:49

@BookClubBlues that made my day!

Gosh! I forgot how mean mumsnet can be! No, no, it was a momentary lapse in judgement as he was making bread and trying to clean up at the same time (before a night shift too) and wasn't thinking straight!
I only posted on here as i was upset that I had gotten it out for the first time in about 2 years and was looking forward to one when i got back!

Poor thing got an earful- i have made equally bad decisions. I even tried to suck up water with a vaccuum in my youth. Don't be too upset, mumsnet- he is a generally good guy - even if he will kill me by electronic fire one day

@AdoraBell buttering the outside? Never heard of it. I would like to say i'll try it but.... well you know :-D

MitziK · 21/07/2019 22:10

Do not attempt to plug it in. It's not safe - just bin it.

(Actually qualified in this stuff - any water damage to something electrical is too dangerous to risk).

Baddabingbaddaboom · 21/07/2019 22:14

I don't really have anything to add but it made me think about when I was moving house and my ex dp packed away the kettle (in the box and the whole shabang) whilst it was still full of water...

My mother never let him forget about it either Grin

There was a thread about this sort of ‘ridiculous lack of common sense/capability from men’ a few days ago and it was hilarious.

But at the same time it’s so true. My DH is a Dr...literally saves lives in an operating theatre all day. So today when i felt unwell but was nervously dithering at his offer to go do the weekly shop he was really put out.

DH- Do you seriously not trust me to go to M&S?
Me- Will you follow the list?
DH- Yes
Me- No swapping flavours or low fat/fullo fat...etc?
DH- I wont!
Me- Will you check dates on things?
DH- Of course 🙄
Me- ...because last time you bought a weeks worth of shopping that all went off the next day...and we had to invite my parents over to help us eat the non freezables 😒
DH: I won’t do that again. Honestly it’ll be fine I know what I’m doing.

.... 🤔 He bought the wrong biscuits (dispite us eating the same ones for years)... the low sugar beans that taste funny and FAR too much bread. I mean he obviously just got really excited at the bakery counter amount of bread...excitedly explained all the different flavours to me as he was unpacking them 😬 oh and the random indervidual meals we’ll never eat. ‘It was 3 for £7’ well that might be the case but we don’t like any of those meals!

Osirus · 22/07/2019 00:09

At least he unplugged it first.

Saracen · 22/07/2019 06:33

Glad you have forgiven him, OP. I agree with you: it was a daft thing to do but we've all done daft things.

Clutterbugsmum · 22/07/2019 06:57

oh and the random individual meals we’ll never eat. ‘It was 3 for £7’ well that might be the case but we don’t like any of those meals! Well that's unfortunate, but he will be eating them seeing as he bought them.

Siameasy · 22/07/2019 07:10

Switch the husband off and switch him back on again. Done!

iamallastonishment92 that is my DH to a tea. Coming back with low fat Halloumi or hummus, stuff which is out of date the next day, having to be briefed pre-shop.....

My brother thought you could fry an egg on the ring of an electrical job.

maartjebaabes · 22/07/2019 07:13

We all do stupid things sometimes. The time I microwaved an egg in its shell... exploded with boiling scrambled eff all over my face. Without glasses and a full beard it might have been quite nasty.

But you 'had a go'. What did you want to achieve from that?

I'd suggest that getting him to buy a new one, and making sure he doesn't do something similar again are noble goals.

How to achieve these? Maybe Laughing at it, asking him to look up what might have happened e.g. Read the instructions which will have 'don't immerse in water' along with the other idiot warnings like don't attempt to use the toaster as a parachute, do not warm up depressed hamsters

Beyond that, I can't see what's 'having a go' does. Imagine you did something slightly stupid - maybe drive the car into the gate - would you want him to empathise, or get shouty? How would you react to him having a go at you - would it help the relationship?

maartjebaabes · 22/07/2019 07:31

Cheese no 6% RTFQ and think that a massive go at someone saying they are stupid is not the way forward. Try imagining it was her who made the mistake and he shouted at her for being stupid. It would look like abuse.

Willowcat77 · 22/07/2019 07:57

The new house rule should be that anyone who believes they can clean electrical appliances in the sink should do so with them plugged in whilst standing in a bucket of water. 😊

RhiWrites · 22/07/2019 08:04

Well I’m a lone voice here but I think it’s fine - depending on how your toastie maker works.

Mine has a single element that heats up. My new one has removable plates but the old one I used to soak (with the lead lying out across the counter).

justchecking1 · 22/07/2019 08:05

My DH tried to boil milk in the kettle once. What goes through their heads??!

Suckasponge · 22/07/2019 09:37

My DH decided to give my pet Rexy a bath. In the sink, under a tap as he needed a good wash.

Rexy is (or should I say 'was') my £500 Roomba I-Robot vacuum cleaner. Hmm

BertieBotts · 22/07/2019 09:46

Water doesn't magically break electrical items, it will cause a short circuit if you power it while there is still water inside, yes, but if you leave it to dry out (properly, like for a week, not a few minutes) it will probably be fine. It would have to be in water for a long time to cause corrosion damage.

Belenus · 22/07/2019 11:58

The new house rule should be that anyone who believes they can clean electrical appliances in the sink should do so with them plugged in whilst standing in a bucket of water.

But there's a big difference between using something electrical whilst it's immersed in water, and using something electrical that's been wet and then allowed to dry out. So long as you allow it to dry thoroughly and don't attempt to run a current through it before then it should be fine. As Bertie says water doesn't break electrical items.
