The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

It is beautiful. Search for wooded areas, wear waterproof clothing and you will hardly notice the rain.

Badcat666 · 20/07/2019 14:09

Anywhere.. stupid fat fingers...

MrsCasares · 20/07/2019 14:27

Hiking/walking isn’t for everyone. The world would be a boring place if everyone was the same. Find yourself a nice pub, glass of wine and take a good book.

Take a boat ride on Windermere or Derwentwater. Visit Keswick (there’s nice shops there). Don’t let anyone bully you into doing something you feel is unsafe.

It’s your holiday too. You have as much right to enjoy it as they have.

RingtheBells · 20/07/2019 14:54

I wouldn’t go up striding edge as I get vertigo so I would tell your DH you are not going and do something instead that you like and leave them to it. That’s what I do when DH goes on these sort of walks

shinynewapple · 20/07/2019 16:10

@washedoutandabout if you are not a confident, experienced walker, if you have vertigo, young children or don't have proper walking gear then please don't attempt to go up or down anywhere with 'edge' in the title (sharp edge / striding edge)

Before we had DC, DH and I were always going on holiday to the lakes but we often did slightly separate things. So one day we'd do a fairly easy walk, then the next day DH would set off somewhere challenging and I would either do part of the walk with him (I would check the route before hand and can map read where there would be an easier return part way through) or otherwise I would remain at the accommodation and perhaps go to the village (wherever we were staying) and do a bit of shopping, visit tea shop, or sometimes there are hotels where you can use their spa or swimming pool.

I would recommend walking round Buttermere as a decent starter walk and there's a pub and cafe at the start.

I am a bit shocked that your DH, who you say is experienced in 'extreme sports' would expect you to do a similar strenuous or tricky walk to the one he wants to do. If he is that experienced I would have thought he would have more sense.

shinynewapple · 20/07/2019 16:43

@Tabitha005 I don't think that all of the Lake District is 'manicured' and 'picture perfect '. Wasdale is very different from Grasmere.

Op, I think I've found your sheep that you lost this morning 😂😂😂

Turned out lovely 🌞

RubbingHimSourly · 20/07/2019 17:16

Weathers has picked up but that wind needs to sod off.

TheGrapefulDread · 20/07/2019 17:18

Plus we’re self-catering
Is everyone pitching in to help with the S/c part ?

Well, I take it all back! The sun is out and it’s beautiful. Gorgeous!

We went up Coniston Old Man which was fine and have been by the lake. Lovely!

The youngest DD did have a slight meltdown but now has discovered Kendall mint cake.

I’ve told DH in no uncertain terms that I’m not doing that terrifying walk. I told him people have died and I’m not taking my children on that. He said, don’t worry, we can “just” do Hellvellyn. I’ll just have I see how we go, but we’ve been on so many totally ridiculous “expeditions” with him that have ruined holidays, nothing would surprise me and I think some people just need to accept that not everyone is impressed by the same things as they are. If he’s not in about mountains, it’s cycling, paragliding or triathlons and I know I’m married to him but I have zero interest. It’s the equivalent of me dragging him shopping for hours on end or around the V&A or something.

Coniston is great. Wonderful cafe on the water's edge.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/07/2019 17:30

I love Coniston, we have had some lovely days there. It's beautiful by the lake, so relaxing. Get the children out on the water if it's not too windy. However, the drive to our holiday cottage there was scary.

sunshine11 · 20/07/2019 17:32

Yep hideous. A bit like Cornwall, equally foul. Would rather be home or somewhere decent for hols.

Boysey45 · 20/07/2019 17:32

I bet that man who dumped his wifes body in lake Coniston thought it was great as well. She was found by scuba divers and laid there for about 20 odd years.

RubbingHimSourly · 20/07/2019 17:32

People die on Helvellyn too.......again it isn't a walk I'd do with young, I experienced children. Send off Mr all the gear no idea Billygoat and rake the kids to Grasmere for a potter round and to buy some gingerbread.

If the weather stays nice fell foot is lovely. You can swim in the lake and hire boats etc. I actually think he sounds a bit selfish and a bit of give and take is fair.

RubbingHimSourly · 20/07/2019 17:35

Wave that at him and tell him to stop being such a moron.

Bloody fog. Im diagnosing you as a townie OP, but you may be showing mild signs of bumpkinism. If you stay here long enough it grows on you.

MarthasGinYard · 20/07/2019 17:36

Thought the woman was found in Wast water?

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 20/07/2019 17:37

ineedaholidaynow · 20/07/2019 17:38

Glad you like it now OP.

I too recommend the walk round Buttermere.

We have just come back from a family holiday in Wales. DH and DS are much more seasoned hikers than me. DH found a walk that he thought would be suitable for all of us. However, we ended up on a steep path on the edge of a hill. All I could see in my head was the sheer drop on one side. DH didn’t see it as a sheer drop. I stopped walking and stayed where I was and had a rest. DH and DS carried on a little way further to get to the top. Then came back and collected me on the way down. They are going back to Wales in a few weeks time for a weekend of hardcore walking. DH might not understand why I don’t like heights etc but he accepts my limitations on our walks.

AnyFucker · 20/07/2019 17:40

lady in the Lake

It was Coniston

avamiah · 20/07/2019 17:44

There are so nice hotels there and some of them have pools and spas if I remember .
You could always go for a massage or swim .
They let you pay for a day membership .
Enjoy

Evilspiritgin · 20/07/2019 17:44

There’s been women found in Coniston and Wast water, wast water is the one where the lady was found on the shelf

Footle · 20/07/2019 17:45

@AnyFucker , yes it's faired up lovely. Different day from this morning.
