To wonder what these men are doing to earn so much?

I have some aquaintances with the most amazing houses. I dont know them very well but i assime their husbands earn a fortune as their houses are lovely and they dont all work.
So what are these high earning jobs and why arent the women doing them? Also, how can i get such a job?

Ask them what their jobs are!
I would guess finance though. I'm a city lawyer but my quite decent salary pales into insignificance in contrast with finance professionals.
Why aren't more women doing these jobs? No reason they shouldn't but tends to be a male dominated field and girls/ young women think it's not "for them" and later it's too late to re educated and retrain.
Also can be long hours, high pressure lots of travel. Lots of women don't fancy that if they want a family. Men are much less bothered in general.

MojoMoon · 19/07/2019 19:08

If in South east then likely finance, banking, city law firms, high level computer programming

Get a degree in maths or computer science from a prestigious uni, work very long hours, have housewife to manage all your home life and children.

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2019 19:08

I don't understand, how have you seen their houses but don't know what their husbands do?

IncandescentShadow · 19/07/2019 19:10

Inheritance plus reasonable job. The highest paid man outwith my own profession that I know is on 130k pa and works in finance. However he has no qualifications, knows almost nothing about the stock market or investments (dictates cut and pasted "market summaries" to his PA) and shouts and swears a lot, usually at junior staff with actual qualifications who then leave to work elsewhere. I didn't actually believe in white male privilege til I saw it in action.

starzig · 19/07/2019 19:14

Plumbers, joiners, electricians and plasterers.

Kazzyhoward · 19/07/2019 19:19

If London/SE probably city types, bankers, lawyers, IT consultants.

Anywhere else in regional less affluent areas, probably doctors/GPs.

In run down areas, probably drug dealers.

ShirleyPhallus · 19/07/2019 19:21

You just have to look on the “how much do you earn” threads to see a depressing number of women talking instead about what their husbands earn instead of them

Is it giving up careers for children young? Or just not having the same opportunities or aspirations as the men?

DP and I earn similar 6 fig salaries but we left having children until we were very financially stable and had established careers

Mintjulia · 19/07/2019 19:24

iT sales. Cyber security . Up to about £250k in either of those.
Or wealthy parents...

applepieicecream · 19/07/2019 19:24

If London/SE probably city types, bankers, lawyers, IT consultants.

Agree plus accountants who are partners in decent sized practices. Management consultants, doctors with sizeable private practices and high end recruiters with own companies.

Depends what you mean by high paying but I’m thinking £250k plus

eurochick · 19/07/2019 20:13

Can't you find out what the jobs are? Look them up on linked in.

Sadie789 · 19/07/2019 20:17

OR... maybe it’s the wife’s money? (Inheritance, savings, lottery) why assume it’s the man?

managedmis · 19/07/2019 20:18

Such a non thread

fiorentina · 19/07/2019 20:32

Just search for them on LinkedIn - that should tell you.

Yes, what a fantastic way to make yourself look like a stalking psycho

LinkedIn tells you when someone’s viewed your profile

I’m a chartered surveyor and it’s not unusual for the top guys to regularly earn over a mil and then theres many more on 500k. It’s not the norm for the industry as a whole at all but in the niche high end I work is not surprising (just to be clear I don’t personally as per most) it’s a clear incentive and ‘possible’ if you’re good and the cards fall into place

Caucho · 19/07/2019 20:47

Equity partners in the good City law firms get to seven figures and of course finance is a different world entirely and my bosses earning a mil might be described as paupers by such people

Jaxhog · 19/07/2019 20:50

If London or environs - city traders/bankers.
If outside London - small business owners, IT consultants.

Or criminals!

Why does it matter?

There’s lots of factors though like pp have said. Inheritance, savings pre children, gifts from wealthy relatives. My husband earns a reasonably good salary (not quite 6 figures, normal good salary!), I don’t earn very much but am part time with 3 kids. We are financially very comfortable, we buy what we want and save at least £1500 a month. But our house isn’t anywhere near as nice as some of my ‘mum friends’ houses, mainly because we had children very young (I was 18 when we had our first) so we’ve built careers and finances around children, and our parents are still working so there’s been no inheritance or gifts.

Branster · 19/07/2019 20:56

Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right.

Stickytoffeepuddingyum · 19/07/2019 21:02

Sales, our top earners are on 150k plus and plenty of women too, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. No qualifications needed

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 19/07/2019 21:03

IME, hedge fund managers or "built up own business and then sold it for a vast sum".

lboogy · 19/07/2019 21:03

I know someone in finance who earns around £250k + 100% bonus so £500k a year. He's very clever and fully deserves his income

Also a family member in IT on 100k plus

lboogy · 19/07/2019 21:04

Yes also sales - especially in IT and finance

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 19/07/2019 21:09

He's very clever and fully deserves his income

No-one deserves that salary. It’s obscene. There is not that huge of a gap between people who are good at their job and people who are absolutely amazing at their job to deserve such a massive salary. Unless you’re going to tell me he has cured all forms of cancer single handed and will be on the news in the morning?
