DH and I have been staying in a hotel in a northern city for a few days. At breakfast DH saw a lad about 12-13 filling up his water bottle from the orange juice dispenser while his mother stood and watched. She was obviously a bit embarrassed but not enough to say anything!

Ha! We stayed at a budget chain hotel recently - 2 adults and 5 children (1 of whom had to book as an adult in order for us to get the two rooms we needed). Breakfast was ‘kids eat free’, and as we arrived in the dining room, the cheery staff instructed us to ‘take as much as you like - clear us out!’

So we all had a reasonable breakfast, and made up sandwiches and took fruit and yoghurts for later. 14 meals for the price of 3 (albeit not a price I would have paid had we been charged it per capita, just for breakfast).

As we left, we passed empty tables covered in plates piled high with uneaten food, where the determination to ‘get our money’s worth’ had obviously been beaten by people’s actual morning appetites.

Did I feel remotely bad about our approach? Nope. And I’m the shopper who will always point out errors in the change that go in my favour...

Ffs. Seriously Op?

suki32 · 18/07/2019 13:13

@probstimeforanewname
By that logic you would have no issue if I went to an evening buffet and took some tupperware with me to pack a few lunches for the week. After all, I've paid for all I could eat, what does it matter if I eat all of it that night in the restaurant or the next day at 1pm?

FishCanFly · 18/07/2019 13:16

i did that on my last cruise holiday, just before disembarkation Grin

effiehabb · 18/07/2019 13:20

Meh, I don't see the problem.

Ticklemeelmo · 18/07/2019 13:21

Total non issue. Who cares?

tearinmybeer · 18/07/2019 13:31

Now fury in The North as tweens take EXTRA ORANGE JUICE, to the horror of local holiday goers, it can be revealed.

malmi · 18/07/2019 13:36

The 'it'll only get chucked out' argument doesn't really work. The amount they put out in the first place is based on expected consumption plus a safety margin, so if everyone was taking more to eat/drink later they would have to put more out.

Or, for example, maybe that extra bottle's worth of orange juice meant they ran out before the end of service and had to open a new carton, of which only one small glass was taken before they had to pour the rest away. Then that illicit bottle caused nearly a whole carton of wastage.

Buffets are planned and costed on the basis of people taking what they can eat at their table, not stocking up for the whole day. It's hardly crime of the century, but if everyone was doing it it wouldn't be sustainable without raising the cost.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 13:41

Don't worry, especially in resorts offering half board, the breakfast buffet IS planned and priced to account for all that.

I have seen people on all inclusive taking a few it pastries or fruits with them. It obviously wasn't to save money.

Candyfloff · 18/07/2019 13:49

@Cryalot2 Have a laugh. You think the police were called because they took a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet? Hmm

Candyfloff · 18/07/2019 13:58

In answer to the OP.

It's them damn northerners, in their northern hotels with their northern kids taking the northern OJ.
Someone call Vera!!!

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 13:59

Never been to that sort of buffet so I couldn't say. However, I suspect "a few lunches" may be considered to be taking the mickey Taking a cereal bar and apple, as I said in my first post, is not. Or even a roll and a bit of cheese for (one) lunch.

The point for me is that I am not a big eater, so why should I get less value for money than someone who is?

Likethebattle · 18/07/2019 13:59

I saw a woman take 5 fried eggs, loads of bacon, sausages etc and barely ate two bites and left most of it 😡 that annoys me more than someone taking a wee roll for later.

bobstersmum · 18/07/2019 14:02

Would you have been bothered if he'd gone back 3 or 4 times for another glass of juice? How is it different?

feistymumma · 18/07/2019 14:02

How is that even Cfery? What if he prefers drinking from his bottle. Gosh people are so judgy, surely they have paid for that drink. It's a different thing if they all filled their bottles for a hike or something but good grief.

Bluntness100 · 18/07/2019 14:06

I really can't imagine getting het up about this. Seriously why do you give a shit, they hadn't run out and you can have as much as you personally please. It didn't impact you

My daughter takes a few tea bags, as she's always running out. But I pay fifteen to twenty quid for her breakfast and she eats like a small mouse.

I've a friend who took some food for some stray dogs we'd befriended.

Really who cares. The hotel still wins.

Namechangesareus · 18/07/2019 14:08

I was on a train the other day with complementary cans of juice/water etc. I took a can of juice of the train for later. Should I call 999 or 101 to hand myself in?

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 14:14

I can't see anyone being that bothered about taking a snack from an evening buffet.

It's probably less expected as most people don't need to eat during the night and are usually more hungry at diner time than at breakfast, but who on earth would be bothered?

ForInstance · 18/07/2019 14:26

Hope you’re managing to enjoy your holiday nonetheless OP Hmm

Cannyhandleit · 18/07/2019 14:32

I used to serve breakfast in a hotel and this would not have bothered me in the slightest! People often take a few extras with them!

PentreBachCymraeg · 18/07/2019 14:33

Nothing to work yourself up over, one bottle of OJ ffs, seriously?

user1511042793 · 18/07/2019 14:37

Absolutely fine and no issue. Often take a roll or fruit for later. Lego land people were making whole buttys up with foil they had bought. Kicked myself for not thinking the same. At a premier in in Plymouth were told to make some up for the journey as it was all you can eat. Better than the kids you see loading their plates and eating a mouthful before doing the same and wasting food.

Isatis · 18/07/2019 14:38

A breakfast buffet is to help yourself to and sit at the table and eat. Taking extra food out of the breakfast room is theft

Good luck with that argument in a prosecution. They only have to say that they prefer to finish off their breakfast in their room and that's the end of the case.

Knitclubchatter · 18/07/2019 14:40

A few years back, stayed at a nice place in NYC. My mom and aunt were late risers and we’d be nearly the last at the breakfast buffet.
The staff literally gave us water bottles for the day. Apples and bananas, yogurt to pack. Etc etc etc

plasterboots · 18/07/2019 16:36

@Namechangesareus yes you should, people like you shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets, let alone ride on public transport!
