DH and I have been staying in a hotel in a northern city for a few days. At breakfast DH saw a lad about 12-13 filling up his water bottle from the orange juice dispenser while his mother stood and watched. She was obviously a bit embarrassed but not enough to say anything!

It is cheeky but it would only have really bothered me if I wanted some orange juice and he took it all. That said, I was raging a while ago at the supermarket when I was waiting to serve myself some soup from the soup station. The woman in front of me was serving herself a large soup carton of the beef and veg soup (which I was waiting on.) Instead of just ladling soup into her carton she drained as much of the liquid as possible from the ladle so she was essentially serving herself just the beef and veg. After she was finally finished I went to serve myself some of the soup to find that of course there was no beef or veg left in the soup, just watery liquid. I'd been so looking forward to it I was furious. Who does that?! Angry

Last year DD wasn't well one morning so stayed in bed. We'd paid in advance for breakfast for 4 people and the hotel wouldn't give a refund for DD not eating. If someone had challenged me for being a CF for walking out with a croissant, bread roll and apple for DD after I'd finished breakfast, they would have been told to FTFO.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 11:42

Who does that?!

same CF who swap all the small eggs in a mixed box for big ones...

A poster was really proud of being so clever on a thread a while back.

ambereeree · 18/07/2019 11:43

Honestly the things people get worked up about. His mum had no need to be embarrassed. Some people don't want to sit for a hour eating.

Knittedfairies · 18/07/2019 11:44

I don't usually care, although I was a bit miffed when I was a bit late going into breakfast and the woman in front of me took the last of the croissants (four or them) and put 3 into her bag.

BowiesJumper · 18/07/2019 11:47

This is genius! Those glasses you get at a breakfast buffet are more like a thimble.

RolyWatts · 18/07/2019 11:55

Many years ago when I were a lass and worked in the service industry we were told to never call the police if there was trouble. Security staff would "encourage" trouble makers outside and would call the police from a mobile phone. The reasoning behind this was that when decisions were made to renew licenses one of the key factors in the decision was how many police visits the premises had-regardless of reason for visit or blame. This may or may not be true (I'd love to know if anyone has any ACTUAL knowledge) and I could have just been working for a chance but if it is true I can't imagine any hotel calling the police for some rolls....... In fact that's just one of the potential twenty million reasons a hotel wouldn't call the police.

ambereeree · 18/07/2019 11:55

@WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt
I saw someone swapping the free range eggs into a tesco value box.
Now I always get my box from the back.

womaninthedark · 18/07/2019 11:56

I don't like people taking more than they are expected to take. However, hotel accommodation is extremely expensive and I can well see how some people might feel justified in taking a little extra.

Pinktinker · 18/07/2019 11:57

Absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Myriade · 18/07/2019 12:02

I can’t see an issue either.
You have no idea how much that lad has had for breakfast. He might have hardly eaten/drunk because he wasn’t hungry and will only have his ‘breakfast’ later in in the day.

FWIW where do you put the limit? I have two teens who are eating what are basically two full breakfast when we are away like this. Plus some bread, quite a few glasses of fruit juice etc...
Shall I tell them to stop after a plate full?
Now compare that with what most 12yo wouod eat plus a glass of fruit juice. Does it matter if he takes 1~2 glasses of fruit juice in his bottle?

JustHereWithPopcorn · 18/07/2019 12:03

A child taking a drink for later? Don't see the problem

raspbury · 18/07/2019 12:09

But I quite often take items from the buffet as a snack for later. Usually a piece of fruit and roll or pastry.

Mainly cos I don't eat a big breakfast and I know after the amount my husband eats there is no way he's going to want to eat again when I get hungry at midday so it's handy to have a snack.

Wouldn't fill a bottle with juice but if it was cartons might take one.

Didn't realise it was so frowned upon.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 12:10

Quite a few clients seem to do the same, not sure why it bothers so much the few busybodies who have a strong opinion about it!

FishCanFly · 18/07/2019 12:11

Watching you see nothing wrong with taking loads extra breakfast products to take away??

a small bottle is hardly "taking loads".
I always have a extra helping for laters

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/07/2019 12:11

Lots of people make lunches up at the time when they have their breakfast. I'm not condoning it...but lots of people do it, to save a little. I wouldn't be bothered by it - but it's not my hotel.

suki32 · 18/07/2019 12:28

To play devil's advocate here, what about if you take 'breakfast' out of the title. Would people feel the same way if you saw someone pack a few spring rolls into a napkin at a Chinese buffet?

Fwiw I don't mind people grabbing some fruit or pastries or whatever to have later. I do draw the line at preparing a packed lunch from breakfast items. You're getting two meals when you've only paid for one, that feels like theft to me.

StoppinBy · 18/07/2019 12:30

My DD and I stayed in a local hotel as a special 'girls night' thing, we had the buffet breaky included in our room package............. then I took a muffin home for my DS who wasn't even staying with us.

Big Deal, I used to work in hospitality and the amount of food that is thrown out from people not eating it at functions is a wicked waste. I would rather someone take it than it go in the bin or down the sink.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 12:34

If you really were not allowed to grab a few bits, then many people wouldn't bother paying the price and would have breakfast in their room instead with a coffee and some biscuits.

Go for a cheap hotel like a Premier Inn, breakfast is from £9.50.
Who would bother paying that for a coffee and yogurt?

rosesandcashmere · 18/07/2019 12:41

I couldn't be bothered about this. Would be more worried about his teeth, but then I'm not paying his dental bills

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 12:49

You're getting two meals when you've only paid for one, that feels like theft to me

But it's an all you can eat breakfast buffet. Why does it matter whether you eat all of it at 9am or some at 9am and some at 1pm? It is completely irrelevant. How on earth is it theft?

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 12:49

And yy on the price. A coffee and a pastry costs less than £5 in most cases. Hotel breakfasts can cost more than £20. Nothing wrong in getting value for money.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 18/07/2019 12:52

t is cheeky and the mum is bringing her kid up wrongly.
Over the years we have seen so much .
One family always made a picnic and packed in tbeir large bags .( deat knows how they did not get food poisoning because it was hot and they took hams and cheeses and such .) But they were stopped by the resturane manager and as we left saw them in reception with the police .

What a load of made up bollocks
How on earth would you get food poisoning😂 it definitely is not a police matter!!!!

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 18/07/2019 12:55

it definitely is not a police matter!!!!

it is, when it 's naice ham Grin

thenightsky · 18/07/2019 12:56

But they were stopped by the resturane manager and as we left saw them in reception with the police

I reckon they'd tried to nick off with a lot more than a bacon roll if the police were there Wink
