To reject the abhorrent Trump rally with all my heart and soul

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 07:39

I rarely post here and actually I am not being unreasonable. Last night's rally in the States was truly utterly terrifying. We are no longer sleepwalking into repeating history, we are marching into it with the drums beating.

Where ever you lie on the political spectrum, we need to fight racism and reject it with all our might. We must stop the normalisation of it in the UK and we must ensure we do not see scenes like we saw in the States last night.

I'd post a BBC link, but I cannot find one on their mobile site.

Naked racism and misogyny. He and his supporters are filth. The other thing he is is a coward. He hasn’t the guts to stand on his record so he whips up a mob.
One consolation - demographics will devour the revolting lot of them. The US will soon be majority non white. The republicans who backed him just signed their own death warrant.

HelloToMyKitty · 18/07/2019 15:06

Aryana Presley is not radical. She is representing the people who elected her

This is true, it’s really more of an AOC/Tlaib/Omar bunfight.

Do not be consoled by this. Hispanics are not, strictly speaking, POC. They are of all races. Also, they tend to be conservative and have conservative values (ie anti-abortion, religious) You should see the Hispanic support Trump has—those of Mexican heritage, especially, see themselves as different from those in Central America so they have a variety of opinions wrt the border crisis.

Havingarethink · 18/07/2019 15:14

Ooh I didn't know that @pallisers, but that is terrifying that this was his turning point.

Is it wrong that I am starting to sympathise with the Brexiteers who don't care about our future economy, they just want to leave EU, well I don't want to have to rely on the US whilst this idiot is in office.

Ohrats · 18/07/2019 15:34

@Havingarethink

That's actually a fair point. On the one hand I'm astounded that so many people are so anti-EU that they'd happily wreck our economy but on the other I'm getting to the point where I'd be proud to see us suspend dealings with the US, no matter the economic consequences.

gingerbreadsprinkle · 18/07/2019 15:42

It's terrifying.

I'm an American currently resident in the UK and I am scared for my family. I don't like racists being emboldened. I feel like the US is very close to riots if the rhetoric keeps escalating like it has been.

Havingarethink · 18/07/2019 15:48

@ohrats, ironic isn't it?
He will destroy us without giving us a second thought. Nows the time to say we really do need them more than they need us.

Sweetbabycheezits · 18/07/2019 16:12

gingerbreadsprinkle same here! It is really difficult to watch what's going on from way over here, and feel a bit powerless to do anything. Equally disturbing is that Trump's actions are now seen as so normal, that leadership in this country may actually weaken as a direct result. I really hope that so many who are outraged by Trump will vote him out in 2020, but I never thought he'd ever get in in 2016!

TanMateix · 18/07/2019 16:18

Welcome to the real US. And the real us, as well, why on Earth do you all think Farage is ever so popular?

The only thing Trump, May, Boris, Tommy Robinson and Farage have changed is giving permission to the racists in our society to be as openly racist in public as they are behind closed doors.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2019 17:40

Trump is indeed an arse of the highest order.

But lets not pretend that the "squad" is morally superior, What some of them have said about the holocaust, Jewish money and congress isn't pleasant .

Roussette · 18/07/2019 18:04

I bet Obama looks back at that now and is thinking WTAF was I thinking, he is so fucking dangerous and who knew

I watched that Correspondents Dinner speech of Obama's the day after it happened and I did think to myself ... let's hope he can never do any damage to Obama because he will be lethal. And then the unthinkable happened and he rolls back every single thing Obama ever did. Out of spite.

I'm getting to the point where I'd be proud to see us suspend dealings with the US, no matter the economic consequences

Me too. Blair was always called America's poodle. BoJo is going to be America's sheep. I loathe BoJo so would prefer Hunt (as the lesser of two evils) but even yesterday he said he would not call Trump the 'R' word. Because of America/UK relations. Scary times.

Whatsername7 · 18/07/2019 18:32

Trump is horrific. He is literally stirring up racial hatred and people will die as a result. His racist and misogynistic views are delivered so plainly - he doesn't even try to cover them anymore. The world terrifies me. 'Years and Years' is becoming increasingly more realistic as time goes on.

TheBigBallOfOil · 18/07/2019 18:51

I don’t think people are saying the squad are morally superior. I am reasonably confident I would disagree with them on most issues. That does not alter the fact that the behaviour of trump and his supporters is disgusting.
Hilary got it wrong when she called them deplorables. Ooze from the sewers is what they are.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2019 18:58

TheBigBallOfOil

I am just pointing out that on one side of this political "debate" is a dickhead and on the otherside is another dickhead.

dreichhighlands · 18/07/2019 19:07

There isn't equivalence between the behaviour and words of the president and the squad however.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2019 19:09

dreichhighlands

Support whichever left or right learning arsehole you wish, but at least recognise that they are arseholes.

MissConductUS · 18/07/2019 19:33

Hilary got it wrong when she called them deplorables

And Trump has now made the same mistake politically. Her other huge misstep was saying on the record that she was going to put a lot of coal miners out of a job and a lot of coal companies out of business.

gingerbreadsprinkle · 18/07/2019 19:57

And Trump has now made the same mistake politically. Her other huge misstep was saying on the record that she was going to put a lot of coal miners out of a job and a lot of coal companies out of business.

It was never about either of them. The racists were riled up because we dared to have a black president for 2 terms. Hilary did nothing wrong and Trump just walked in for racists to get retribution. He's teflon because in their minds it's their time now. Everything about this presidential term has been about racism.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 19:59

There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for Trumps treatment of these women. If you think there is, you have no moral compass.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 20:13

He vaguely walks it back today, but it's mission creep, each time push further then step back a little. The norms reform.

boney I'm a pretty dyed in the wool centrist.
But there is no equivalence between these young women of colour and Trump.
How you rate these women as humans has no relevance to what Trump said about them and how he allowed people at one of his rallies to behave towards them.

chomalungma · 18/07/2019 20:30

At what point would you leave a country? He just goes further and further. When does it become too late to leave?

He stirs up hate. This morning, Hunt could not call him a racist. He was asked by Naga, on BBC Breakfast, about this. Yesterday, she was visibly upset as a Trump apologist came on to explain that his racism plays well to his base. Hunt said it was awful but could not call him 'the r word' to use his words because of 'diplomacy'.

derxa · 18/07/2019 20:45

Trump is hideous but this is part of his re-election strategy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 20:48

That doesn't negate how dangerous it has become though.

OP posts:
dreichhighlands · 18/07/2019 21:00

It is absolutely part of his election strategy, DH and I were discussing only two weeks ago how ridiculous it was how much time his rallies were still devoting to Hilary. He needed a new other to set himself against, a a group of young liberal woman of colour is perfect for this.
But Hitler was elected. Trump being elected on a wave of racist populism isn't safe for the minorities of the US and it isn't helpful for the country as whole.

Screamanger · 18/07/2019 21:14

I am a Brit in the US, I have recently become a US citizen. I feel the next election will be interesting, however he will win as there is no Democratic alternative right now. I plan on voting Libertarian.

I expect there will be a war.
A war of what kind? Global or Civil?
