Glockenspiel

Ds 8 really enjoys playing the glockenspiel at school. He also plays the piano working toward his prep test. It's his birthday in August and he asked for his own glockenspiel, can you recommend a decent one please?

YABU to do that to yourself, frankly.

Cheeserton · 17/07/2019 21:23

I'm afraid I'm no glockenspiel expert, but YANBU to get him one!

Do you have neighbours?

Knittedfairies · 17/07/2019 21:24

Ask whoever teaches music at school?

Cheeserton · 17/07/2019 21:32

Do you have neighbours

Oh please. It's no worse (and probably better) than most other musical instruments. Let's just stifle kids' musical interests because it's not silent eh?

My Ds plays the glockenspiel.......I took him into a local music shop to try them out and choose one. I think it cost about £70 in the end

Such low ambitions with just a glockenspiel, are you sure a gamelan isn't more more suitableGrin

Have a look at Chamberlain Music - the cheapies you get from Amazon tend to sound rather like hammering a flattened bean can with a housebrick. He'll want the sharps and flats as well (a chromatic glock).

This one is OK for tone, if a little pricey www.chamberlainmusic.com/products/pp2250?variant=8106370498605 - the best one is probably way out of your price range at about £525. Or go to a shop and find out which sounds nicest before buying one.

There is a 39 second audio clip on youtube called "orchestra fail".

You should give it a listen Grin ...i first encountered this a few years ago. I didn't have kids then, but I swore at the time that if I did, I would never EVER buy them a musical instrument.

I think it’s a great idea, good xylophones are easier on the ear but more expensive. Gamalans work better as a whole family activity.

ThePurpleHeffalump · 17/07/2019 21:43

No idea why I can’t spell tonight.

coolwalking · 17/07/2019 21:56

I would get a xylophone - your ears will thank you. It's the same musical theory.
