OK, so there have been a few conspiracy theories around the 1969 moon landing, and some people think it was staged; all filmed on a film set (in Arizona I think...) I used to believe these conspiracy theories, but have seen a few things more recently that have made me think 'hmm maybe it did happen...' I am quite torn. So can I ask you to vote to say what you think... Thanks folks Smile

So, vote YABU if you think the 1969 moon landing DID happen.

And vote YANBU if you think it did NOT happen, and was indeed staged...

Much appreciated. Smile

(Sorry I can't enable a 'not sure' button, so if you aren't sure, just say so in the thread (if you like...)

@Ohrats

Everyone knows how China and the USA are best buddies. They probably just want the US to look good.

I don’t know. I’ve been to the space museum in Moscow and you should see some of the stuff they claimed went into space- they’re all held together by duct tape!

JoannaCuppa · 16/07/2019 21:47

It's not light hearted though is it? The world is in quite a mess at the moment, in a large part due to ignorance and a view that 'beliefs' are of equal importance to facts. Those who don't believe that humans have walked on the moon are people who have no ability or desire to understand evidence. That is a problem

This

Our population seems to be suffering from an inability to think critically. We are so used to being passive recipients of mindless information, that some seem to have stopped questioning the validity of that information.

Who are the people who tend to believe conspiracy theories? Keyboard warriors whose lack of intelligent argument and inability to differentiate facts from opinion.

When faced with the choice between believing the incredibly knowledgeable men and women of NASA, or Bob - who lives in his mother's basement and whose technical skills extend as far as opening beer cans and rolling joints - I am incredulous that anyone believes that Bob's opinion is as valid as NASA's facts.

Head in hands that at this point 1 in 4 seem to think it didn't happen!!!
Others have said it better,....,

JoannaCuppa · 16/07/2019 21:54

Sorry, my post was badly worded. Must have been spending too long on conspiracy forums! Flowers

Agreed, but I think it's even worse than that. There seem to be a lot of people who think their opinions are just as good as anyone else's, even when they know diddlysquat about anything and the other person is a Nobel level scientist or equivalent expert. The lifelong struggle of real experts to understand a complex topic, the thousands of years of patient work by scientists and other clever people to build up a body of knowledge and apply it, it's all passed them by.

The Russians were closely watching the moon landing to verify it happened as they were in a race to get their before the US. If they'd been faked, the USSR would have been falling over themselves to say so.

This. The Russians wouldn't have let this go.

Well, NASA and the US Government wanted to fake the moon landings, but they employed Stanley Kubrick to film it and he insisted on filming on location.

BishopofBathandWells · 16/07/2019 22:05

I can't seem to vote in the app (maybe I can, it's been a long day). I don't think this thread is lighthearted, it's symptomatic of a growing number of people who think they can argue against verified facts, expert opinion and testimony, because they read something online.

Also, because I'm a humourless fucker it seems, I find it appalling that when idiots contradict the truth of the moon landing it erases the work of thousands of people - men, women, POC - for whom the moon landing might very well have been their life's work.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/07/2019 22:14

The moon is actually a model built in the ocean where people believe Australia is, put there by Garry Anderson to film UFO and Space 1999:

Piffle. Wink It’s hollow and a spaceship.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow_Moon

Humans have met E T up there several times. I believe there was a basic explanation in an episode of Ben and Holly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/07/2019 22:15

@emwithme
Brilliant!

LaMarschallin · 16/07/2019 22:18

BishopofBathandWells

Very much agree.
(Not about you being a humorless fucker Smile).

But people seem to believe they have the right to say things are Fake News just because they don't want to believe them. Totally ignoring the actual evidence.

Social media has provided a new platform for people who really seem a bit stupid to insist their beliefs are right.

(Yes, I do realise the irony of me posting this on social media)

Passthecherrycoke · 16/07/2019 22:19

I love the story about buzz aldrin punching moon landing denier and have been googling it for ages now Grin

BMW6 · 16/07/2019 22:21

Makes me wonder what else do these people refuse to believe in the face of documented fact and personal testimony. Are they also Holocaust deniers?

annikin · 16/07/2019 22:22

Foreign governments including Russia and China have confirmed that their satellites have spotted the equipment left behind on the moon. Can't see any reason why they would lie for the USA.

StitchingMoss · 16/07/2019 22:23

Now we can see how Brexit happened when 25% don’t believe the moon landing happened Shock.

Or are they taking the piss???

Please say they’re taking the piss!Confused

ipswichwitch · 16/07/2019 22:23

They were prepared for the eventuality that they couldn’t bring the astronauts home. The broadcast would go down and Nixon had a speech prepared. There were a lot of unknowns going into this.

There were also hundreds of people who were part of it, and expecting them all to keep schtum for the last 50 years and not reveal any fakery is frankly ludicrous. It was known as the space race for a reason - the ultimate goal was to be the First Nation on the moon, and if it wasn’t possible for the Americans to have done it you can bet your arse the Russians would have called them out in it. They were hardly best buddies at the time!

Coffeeisnecessary · 16/07/2019 22:39

Blimey I do understand small vs far away 😁 wasn't expecting to be told I was dropped on my head as a child though, bit harsh! The moon is a quarter of the size of earth so I'm just confused about why the earth looks the size of the moon from the moon, I thought it would look three quarters bigger, I mean a cow a quarter of the size of normal cows would look smaller than the full size ones from the same distance! I was expecting to be told something about the atmosphere of the earth changing the way we see the moon, not told I'm an idiot but never mind, lesson learned, don't ask a question on mumsnet!!

cardibach · 16/07/2019 22:43

Coffee how do you know how big earth looks from the moon? You are talking about the photos, and you have no idea of scale.
