Ours came from an ad on Pets4homes. Had no idea this wasn’t good. Dog has been fine though.

FatJess - A friend after a marriage breakup, but the dog originally came from Dogs Trust.
MuttDog - Many Tears Animal Rescue
RottDog - Local Rescue

I'll never buy a dog. There are too many out there that need homes.

FJ was a year old when she was rescued, 18 months when I got her. She lived till she was 13.
MD was 8 weeks or so and is still going strong at nearly 10.
RD was 2 ish and we had her for 2 years before she died from Bone Cancer.

A breeder, who had taken back a pup that was rejected by first owners (for not looking right, as with a cross breed that can happen. she was black and slinky, instead of grey and fluffy like all her brothers and sisters)

We found the breeder through word of mouth

Whyisitsodifficult · 16/07/2019 18:50

We’re thinking of getting our first family dog this year. I always thought we would get one from a rescue place as seems unfair to go to a breeder when others are in real need of homing. This thread has got me thinking whether they would let us have one. My youngest is 6, do you think they won’t let us have one?

WeirdCatLady · 16/07/2019 18:51

RSPCA. All of our dogs have been rescued. Our cats were Blue Cross rescues. Our chickens were also rescued from being Battery Chickens.

IMHO anyone who buys a dog from an advert or a breeder is a twat when there are so many animals in rescues already who need homes. It makes me Angry. HTH Hmm

What's a 'registered breeder' who are they registered with? Is it's the Kennel Club? I have a very low opinion of the KK personally and some of their breed standards that are little more than deformities and cause suffering in dogs.

Heyha · 16/07/2019 18:52

Friend's neighbour needed to re-home two of their three dogs. We'd met the dogs and people several times before and had a soft spot for the one we ended up with but it was still a bit of a punt.

Amelia910 · 16/07/2019 18:53

From a kennel club assured breeder seven years ago, my first dog. Got her at 21, she is perfect 😍 Star

Ginger1982 · 16/07/2019 18:54

Whenever I glance at rescue websites all the dogs seem to say that they won't be rehomed to homes with kids under 8.

Got ours from gumtree from a woman who's bitch had been knocked up by her sister's dog. Went to visit a number of times and all seemed genuine. Our pup was so lovely but unfortunately ended up with a lot of aggression problems.

I would go to a reputable breeder next time.

Pets4Homes. I know now she wasn't a "proper" breeder but she was great to deal with and I am friends with her on FB. I've never seen her breed another litter and we've had him three years. She's very informed and I have contacted her since with queries about him and she was really helpful. I don't know, obvs Pets4Homes isn't ideal but we had a very positive experience with her.

exLtEveDallas · 16/07/2019 18:55

@whyisitsodifficult : DD was 4 when we got the MuttDog from Many Tears. They had no issue with homing her with us. They are located in Wales, but have dogs in foster homes all over the country.

BullBullBull · 16/07/2019 18:55

A breeder that worked with DH. She’s fantastic.

CanoeDoYouThinkYouAre · 16/07/2019 18:56

KC registered breeder after we were rejected by rescue centres for having children (youngest is ten) and because I have just finished treatment for cancer one of the centres refused in case I got ill again🙄

I get quite fucked off with people who ask where we got him and then raise their eyebrows when I say a breeder.

Our breeder also runs a rescue centre (all the money from selling the pups goes back into it) and we will be supporting her work there in the future.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 16/07/2019 18:56

Pre loved, turns out we know (ish) the owners as he was the care taker at dns school

We still send updates 3 years on. They used to breed kc registered collies but didn’t kc register the litter of shih tzus . I’m not a big fan of KC anyway

BullBullBull · 16/07/2019 18:57

Oh and she kennel Club approved and used to train her dogs for crufts.

Tingface · 16/07/2019 18:58

Preloved. She’s a mongrel- we didn’t want a pedigree and no local rescues would touch us cos we had kids. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Giggorata · 16/07/2019 18:59

Researched and registered breeder for Ddog1. Ddog2 from Ddog1, via researched and registered sire.

YouJustDoYou · 16/07/2019 19:00

From a charity. Breeders are immoral.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/07/2019 19:00

Our brown lab came from a Kennel Club registered breeder.

Our other dog, who we think is a lab-pointer cross, came from the Dogs’ Trust.

KarmaStar · 16/07/2019 19:00

Rescues all the way

MysweetAudrina · 16/07/2019 19:01

Local rescue. Best dog ever :)

Bunnybigears · 16/07/2019 19:01

1st dog Free to good home on Gumtree - mainly to stop anyone else getting her with bad intentions. They said she was 4 years old, she was at least 8 based on her microchip had multiple health problems and died a year after we got her of old age.

2md dog. English rescue centre although he was originally bought over from Romania he has issues around other people especially kids but is incredibly good natured with our immediate family and very laid back and easy to look after. Although I do have to say no everytime someone asks to stroke him. Which makes them look at me like Hmm

miaCara · 16/07/2019 19:01

Rescue centre . Great dog but very nervous of some people at the start.
Looked into a registered breeder this time so contacted them and asked to go and look at the latest litter. I had contacted them by phone and email and they said theyd let me know to arrange a visit . Got whatsapped from a different number telling me that I can arrange to visit the litter via them .However I must first give them a (unspecified amount) deposit to 'prevent accidents' - oh and I should provide them with my bank details to do so rather than just handing over the cash.
Erm - we declined the kind offer.
Never heard of this scam before but the scary thing is we know some would be taken in by it and hand over their details quite happily.

PurpleDragons · 16/07/2019 19:02

The local farming paper’s classifieds section. We have a border collie from a local farm Smile
