To keep DS off school (maybe TMI)

DS (5yo) had stomach cramps followed by loose stools after dinner. Wasn't full blown diarrhoea but wasn't normal consistency. I think it might have been because of some high fibre cereal he had this morning (never had it before). He can often get a bad stomach after wholemeal bread.

He is absolutely fine otherwise, ate a big dinner, happy and bright - just his normal self really but I'm thinking I should keep him off school tomorrow as can't be 100% sure it's not a bug. DH thinks he's fine to go in. Opinions?

I think if he’s prone to slight stomach upsets and has no other symptoms of a bug, I would send to school. Any sign of a temperature or further ‘episodes’ and I’d keep him off.

I second what fiorentina said.

Otherwise he'd be off all the time, surely...

You'll know by morning if he needs to stay home. A stay home bug would involve more than 3 runny poo episodes in relatively short succession.

I'd send him in provided one loose episode and no vom tbh

I would say after 3 loose stools keep them home. That's our nursery policy before the call us

Ribeebie · 15/07/2019 21:21

If he doesn't have any other symptoms/episodes overnight it's not going to be a bug and there's no reason you shouldn't send him to school

FeatherySquawkington · 15/07/2019 21:21

He's not prone exactly, last time he had diarrhoea was in May but that was a stomach bug and he was extremely ill. It's not normal for him to get stomach cramps and need to rush to the loo either, which he did. This was about three hours ago and he hasn't been since. Is fast asleep now.

One loose stool is not diarrhoea. If he's well, and no other signs of a bug, of course he should go in.

HubbabubbaT · 15/07/2019 22:47

What pps said. Wait til morning.. if he's really got a bug you will have incidents in the night.

Standard practice at our school is two days after last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea. I know you're not sure if this counts, but the alternative is perhaps sending him in to infect a whole classroom, which would be rubbish so close to the holidays. Get him tested for dietary intolerances during the break so you'll know in the future.
