Dd, dh and myself just had a four day break by the sea side. We live as far as you can get from the seaside in the uk. Whilst on our holiday i bought dd a net. Dh and dd then spent a few hours exploring sand rock pools (no rocks, just sand with water left in them) with said net. I got amazing photos of them but as sand rock pools it was limited. Dd is two. Her favourite film at the moment is im going on a bear hunt and when they go rock pooling theres real rock pools. So knowledgeable mntters..wheres the best rock pools with dunes like the film in the uk suitable for a two almost three year old to visit. Thank you.

Oh good question, I’m interested in any answers you get.

There were loads of people rock pooling on a recent break in Devon (Jurassic coast so fossil hunting is a thing too I believe). It was the beach belonging to the Haven park there.

Joss Bay bear Broadstairs if you’re in Kent

Thefemalekeithrichards · 15/07/2019 19:35

Kimmeridge bay Dorset. The wildlife trust volunteers from the centre on the beach do a guided walk and talk and are very knowledgeable

ChibiTotoro · 15/07/2019 19:36

Kimmeridge in Dorset is great for rock pooling.

YouTheCat · 15/07/2019 19:37

Northumberland.

Westward Ho!
Lovely flat Rocky area with proper rock pools.

Teddybear45 · 15/07/2019 19:38

Isle of Wight. Often rock pools can be found in sandy beaches too

IShitGlitter · 15/07/2019 19:39

New Brighton over on The Wirral is fantastic for rock pooling and they have a big marine lake for crabbing aswell its a small seaside resort with arcades, play areas, cinema and various restaurants a few b n b s and a travel lodge.

The Wirral its self have lots to do aswell you could catch a mersey ferry over to Liverpool and go to the world museum its fantastic.

Yes to Kimmeridge.

Pett Level has wonderful rock pools as well as being a very unusual, delightful place. I do think rock pooling is being discouraged now though - however, do go to Pett Level sometime if you can.

Triaddurr bay, Anglesey. At the far end. Found all sorts with the kids.

There are some good beaches in South Devon. It’s heartbreaking to see how much they’ve changed though. I recently took my dc’s to several beaches that I used to regularly go to as a kid. I remember my dsis, dbro and I would claim a rock pool each and see who could get a crab, a blenny, a winkle and a shrimp the quickest. It would normally take half an hour or so. Going back to the same rock pools with my dc and there’s no anemone’s, barely any seaweedy moss stuff that the shrimps used to hide in. It took us hours and about 10 pools to find 1 blenny Sad.

Pett and Bexhill-On-Sea have rock pools at low tide but as Rachael ^^ said rock pooling is being discouraged. My DC love a good rock pool but I've said they can't fish things out anymore, it seems too cruel to me. I've seen so many people that aren't satisfied with one crab, they want a whole bucket full and one man and his kids left a bucket full of love crabs on the beach and went for a swim! Arse! I put them back in a large rock pool and left stones in his bucket.

As an aside, the info about Pett Level is out of date, there are no pubs or cafes on the beach. That's why I like it, it's mostly dog walkers and idiots who smash rocks/try to walk to Hastings/or climb the crumbling cliff face.

Steephill Cove has brilliant rock pools and is beautiful. Ventnor is good too.
Thanet generally with Broadstairs being the nicest and Joss Bay as an exemplar but Viking Bay at low tide is still good. Minis Bay in Birchington is also good and you can collect winkles to cook.

A wild card would be Grange near Keswick, in the Lake District, fabulous river fishing for tiny ones with nets. Sandy/gravelly points of entry and very shallow.
Some off the beaches around St David’s are good too.

mindutopia · 15/07/2019 20:27

Lyme Regis down by where all the fossils are (way eastern side of the beach, I think it’s called the fossil highway or something).

Branscombe in Devon is also lovely.

And we found some amazing rock pools in Anglesey but I don’t know the name of the beach.

Satchell · 15/07/2019 20:29

St Mary's island Whitley bay is very good.

Eastie77 · 15/07/2019 20:33

Broad Haven beach, Pembrokeshire.

ConorMcGregorsChin · 15/07/2019 20:34

Another vote for St Mary's Lighthouse Whitley Bay. I live half a mile away. Did school trip with year 2 last week. Went up the lighthouse. Caught all sorts of fish and crustaceans in our nets. People come from far and wide to visit our coastline. We also have Northumberland and North York's on our doorstep.
