To think friend is being U about car

lastqueenofscotland · 15/07/2019 19:14

I sold a friend a car 18 months ago for £200. It wasnt the newest car (mid 00s plate) but it was totally reliable and was fine for what she wanted (literally a run around to get to/from shops). I looked after it well and it sailed through its first MOT with her with only a wiper blade needing changing. She had the MOT last week and it’s failed in a big way. Saying it’s a write off... I have advised first she tries a garage that isn’t Kwikfit but... she’s asking for the money back Confused aibu to tell her to fuck off?! she’s had 18 completely trouble free months for a £200 car!

Private car sales are sold as seen/buyer beware. It’s entirely up to the buyer to carry out checks on the vehicle before agreeing the purchase. Once the V5 and money is exchanged the car is entirely the responsibility of the new owner, including any existing problems. This means even if the door falls off two second after the handshake it is not your problem, but the buyer’s.

To even contact you about this a year later is not only U, but she would not have a leg to stand on legally.

Tell her to F off and in future follow another golden rule - don’t do business with family or friends!

drinkygin · 15/07/2019 19:35

Hahaha no you’re not unreasonable! Cheeky cow. Please update with her response when you tell her where to go Grin

Tighnabruaich · 15/07/2019 19:35

Nonsense! Tell her to get lost. We sold a convertible to someone, they went out in it for a drive with OH, put the roof up and down, everything hunky dory, exchanged money, log book etc., and the next morning the roof failed. She let us know but wasn't after any recompense, just said it was one of those things and it worked perfectly on the test drive. Caveat emptor and all that .

Drum2018 · 15/07/2019 19:37

Ignore her. She has no comeback.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 15/07/2019 19:37

Shes bonkers. for 200 over 18 months I wouldnt mind if the car had given up the ghost. 200 for a roadworthy mid 00s car that is roadworthy, certified and insurable is a gift in the first place!

thenightsky · 15/07/2019 19:38

What are we betting she's been driving it around for the last year with various warning lights on the dashboard and no service ever done?

Oh, and probably a funny banging noise that she's ignored. Grin

Arnoldthecat · 15/07/2019 19:39

She is taking le piss,,,£200 is nothing and you cant expect miracles. Also she doesnt need to be going to kwik fit ,,everyone knows that.

PhannyPharts · 15/07/2019 19:39

I think I've seen it all. Then I read something like this.

What did you say to her when she asked? What's the betting she gets arsey now?

TheRedBarrows · 15/07/2019 19:39

Haha!
£11 pcm, and that ‘s without selling it for scrap / to a breakers yard.

Tell her that BuyAny offered £800 and suggest she died some research into car prices.

Reallybadidea · 15/07/2019 19:40

we buy any car offered me £800 for it

Give her the £200 and sell it to WBAC, you'll be in profit Wink

Ohyesiam · 15/07/2019 19:40

£200 for 18 months of car is a good deal.

YouTheCat · 15/07/2019 19:40

Give her the £200 back and then charge her the going rate for hiring your car for 18 months.

bridgetreilly · 15/07/2019 19:41

OP, if you've got another one of those lying around, I'll buy it for £200!

cstaff · 15/07/2019 19:45

Tell her to sue you. She will get laughed out of court. CF

Sorryisntgoodenough · 15/07/2019 19:48

It passed its first MOT with her -and she now thinks because it’s failed a year later after her driving it every day-that you should give her a refund? Is she intellectually challenged?
Confused

does she also take the cake wrapper back to the shop and ask for a refund because after eating it the wrapper is now empty?
FFS total CF. Send her the link to this thread

Travis1 · 15/07/2019 20:06

🤣🤣🤣 she’s crackers!

Farmerswifey12 · 15/07/2019 20:15

Absolutely tell her to fuck off. She's totally taking the piss!

If she'd bought a car anywhere else for 200 on gumtree or wherever, it would have been sold as spares and repairs. She got a bargain

iklboo · 15/07/2019 20:19

Does she take her poo to McDonalds to ask for a refund because it's no longer a burger?

She's crackers!

Bookworm4 · 15/07/2019 20:22

Did it not cross her mind to do any maintenance on the car? Older cars need regular servicing/maintenance, she’s a very CF, laugh at her.

Catinthetwat · 15/07/2019 20:27

You are of course being unreasonable for selling it to her in the first place, if you were offered 800 for it!

Smelborp · 15/07/2019 20:37

Has she never owned a car before? £200 for 18 months use is brilliant!

SagAloojah · 15/07/2019 20:42

Not sure if posters are joking, but don't give the money back in the hope of getting more from WBAC. 18 months is a long time and you're unlikely to get much for it.

tempester28 · 15/07/2019 20:46

£200 for 18 months use! She has had her money's worth!

billybagpuss · 15/07/2019 20:47

I trust you laughed at her first and told her to FO before asking the MN jury.

CruellaFeinberg · 15/07/2019 20:50

and you laughed and then she laughed and you saw it was a bog ole joke!
