A few months ago, I posted asking for advice regarding a congenital abnormality my unborn son had been diagnosed with. At the time we were told that it was either going to be incompatible with life, or require surgery to remove when he was born. Condition is called CPAM, which is essentially large cysts forming instead of healthy lung tissue.

We were given the option to terminate but told that he had a very good chance of survival so didn’t. We’ve had regular monitoring and at our most recent appointment, his cyst is now smaller than 1cm in size. In fact it has shrank so dramatically they don’t even think he will be any different to another newborn and that surgery may be optional.

I’m 3 weeks away from giving birth, and feel like this has been the most stressful period of my life! Cannot wait to have him here now!

How absolutely wonderful! This might not be apt for you now, but you may still like it. I wrote it after my Grandchild was born with a congenital brain condition, also diagnosed in pregnancy.

Arthur
They said that you would have problems
They said that you might be slow
To develop
Or to grow
They said it might be months
Before you sat or crawled
Or stood
Alone
They said you might not
Learn as easily
As others do,
Because a part of you
Is missing.
They didn’t say
How beautiful you’d be
How your smile would light up
The room.
They didn’t say
That any difficulties you’d have
Would be part of what
Makes you, you.
They didn’t say
That you’d be loved
In spite of any problems you
Might have.
They didn’t say that
You’d be perfect
Because they didn’t know.
And it’s sad that before you were born,
We didn’t know either.
We should have known
That the tears we shed for the baby
We had expected
Were wasted tears.
We welcomed into our family
A baby that they said would have problems
But what we got
Was you.
Our perfect little baby.
