AIBU to be annoyed at the people below us?

Our flat is rented and I’m pretty sure the one below is too.. but every evening all I can smell coming from downstairs is weed. They moved in about a month ago so I’m sure it’s them as I haven’t smelt it that strongly before.

Now it’s warmer we have the windows open and I don’t really want to shut them but it’s getting to be really strong some nights!

I’m not really wanting to go and ask them to smoke it elsewhere or shut their own windows.. i can imagine if they’re the kind of people to smoke weed in a rented flat they won’t be bothered by us mentioning it.. but I really don’t want to be smelling it in my own flat every night!

I’m tempted to let the building managers know but maybe I am just being sensitive?!

No thats annoying. I'd perhaps let the flat renters know. Every night is a bit much.

YANBU I live above smokers and whenever they smoke outside the whole flat stinks.

Why on earth would you imagine that?

And in your mind, who are 'the kind of people who smoke weed'?

Pick anyone from any walk of life and you'll find some of them smoke weed.

If you have a problem with the smell (as I would too), just knock and have a polite word, rather than making strange assumptions about the 'kind of people' they are.

Unless they’re scary looking then yes, just go and ask if they could please close the windows when they’re smoking weed

Generally I appreciate the drift... but someone was smoking s VILE variety underneath my bedroom window last week (the fron if the house is right on the footpath unfortunately) & it gave me a terrible headache

I was just about to go and ask if he could move on when he left anyway.

Give them the opportunity to do as asked before Dobbing them in to the LL

If they are renting it's a breach of their tenancy agreement.

Report to who?

Let the building management know.
Drug use may be a breach of their tenancy agreement and they’re obliged to do something about it.
Speak to someone on the phone, get a name for reference then send them an e-mail “as per our discussion........” (so you have something in writing) and cc in your local police team. That usually puts a rocket up the management team.

The OP made reference to reporting to her building manager. I presume they would take up the issue with the owner of the flat.

Can you just nip downstairs and say 'I don't know if you're aware or not but I can smell your joints all the way upstairs. I'd hate for you to get in bother with the landlord so you might want to do something about it'.

Ive got the same problem with my downstairs neighbour. It STINKS its so pungent and strong.
