Thinking of going geocaching today? Are people still hiding caches? Or will we not find any now?! What’s the best app for it?!
Thank you all 🐳

We always find plenty, obviously leave something too if we take. We also still make caches and there are loads out there. I hadn’t for one second thought it old-fashioned!

transformandriseup · 14/07/2019 11:20

My sister regularly geocaches all over west cornwall.

spongebunnyfatpants · 14/07/2019 11:34

Use the official geocaching website. You'll find loads.
We still do it and there are always one or two that are missing but the majority are still there.

Lostalot · 14/07/2019 11:58

Great thank you !😎. What are you meant to hide or replace things with ? We e never done it before.

Little pens or rubbers, badges, marbles, hair bobbels, anything small. Some don't have any gifts in them, they just have something to sign.

MaudebeGonne · 14/07/2019 19:27

I accidentally found one the other day. I was delighted!

Icedlatte · 14/07/2019 19:29

How does one begin? I've always been curious about this, love the thought that there's a game going on under our noses, but don't quite understand how it all works

bobstersmum · 14/07/2019 19:50

This is something that I can do with the dc in the holidays so thank you!!

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 14/07/2019 19:51

Look on the official geocaching website / app and it will explain it all to you.

You use the app to navigate to the area of the cache, then hunt around until you find it.

The kids love it!

Lostalot · 14/07/2019 20:06

We did go out and have a go today. Kids loved it! Found two , just a piece of paper to sign, but they were excited enough with that! Am going to look into how we make our own and put them on the app. Yes will be good for the summer holidays !😎😎

If you have an android phone I'd use the app c:geo
The official one shuts out a lot of caches unless you are premium now (I think it's anything above a 1.5 difficulty or terrain) - whereas c:geo gives you all the ones people haven't set as premium.

I love it, but I have noticed there seem to be less stash in them - I will occasionally add stuff to them even when not taking things as my kids loved getting things from them when they were little

Lostalot · 14/07/2019 21:53

Thankyou for the tips iolaus will look into that 👍

We are a geocaching family too!
The website will give you all the info you need and I'd really recommend the Facebook page Geocaching - How To? , they are really kind and helpful on there.

At the moment we're trading old / foreign coins as swag as those are what my kids were most excited to find in other caches and because I'm trying to cut down on my plastic use.

We've been geocaching about 15 months now, it's taken us to some weird and wonderful places we wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Lostalot · 15/07/2019 06:42

Rosie your user name suggests you are in the NW. Is there anywhere around NW you would particularly recommend? Foreign coins sounds like a great idea. I am getting excited about going again! Will have a look on fb page too. 🐬

We found a cache this year and added and re hid.

bobstersmum · 15/07/2019 09:34

@iolaus please can I ask on that app, when it says configure at the beginning which one do I select?

RosieLancs · 15/07/2019 10:43

@Lotsalot Sadly no, I am in Portsmouth these days but when I first signed up to Mumsnet I was living up in Lancashire.

Happy to answer any questions people have about geocaching though!

Fatbutt · 15/07/2019 11:23

Cachly is a good (paid) app, but the geocaching app is just fine - premium is not needed but I would recommend it, due to so many people destroying non premium caches (usually people who sign up, go out to locate them then never return) more are being listed as premium.

SWAG is not needed, but its nice to have some on hand, more caches in and around towns are too small for swag so all you really need is a pen! (and tweezers, trust me on this one!)

its definitely not old fashioned, there are loads of new caches coming all the time replacing the older archived ones!
