To ask wtf is wrong with my knee?

I've got some osteoarthritis in my knee and have been referred for physio (no appointment yet).

For the last couple of weeks, I've been getting swelling on the inside of the knee when I've walked more than a very short distance. Yesterday, the swelling got really noticeable and has spread from the inside of the knee to half-way round the back. I can actually jiggle it about - it's as though it's filled with fluid. The swelling isn't painful, but the knee hurts like mad, and is hot.

This is the first time it hasn't gone back to normal overnight. I've been treating it with cold pain relief gel and ibuprofen gel, which help, but I've necked 30mg of codeine this morning which has barely touched it.

One knee looks like I nicked it from someone much fatter, and I can barely walk. And we're going on holiday tomorrow (touring in our motorhome). Oh, and I've put on 2 lbs - I reckon that's how much extra my knee weighs!

Anyone got any idea what it is and what I can do about it? Atm, amputation seems like a good option.

Put proper ice on it (the cold gel feels nice but doesn't have the same effect) and find a private physio while you are away.

Baker’s cyst?

LakieLady · 14/07/2019 09:10

Baker's cyst was a good call, but I've just looked it up and I don't think it is. The swelling covers a big area (I'd say about 9" diameter) and is more on the inside of my leg than the back.

My 'physio appt' (through my GP surgery) for knee osteoarthritis turned out to a 10 min chat where I was told to take up cycling to build up the muscles. Didn't even examine me. I'm nearly 60 and the roads around here are deadly without me adding to the toll!

It sounds like you've got more going on that just osteoarthritis.

Deep vein thrombosis?

NoSauce · 14/07/2019 09:27

I would get it looked at before you go away personally OP.

Sounds like you need to ice/elevate/compress and get to see a doc ASAP, hot doesn’t sound good at all. Also oral ibuprofen to try and limit any swelling.
But def doc as soon as poss, can you get to a walk in centre?

Pikapikachooo · 14/07/2019 09:35

I would go to a local walk in and they will X-ray and check it

I also had physio after a bad fall and it totally sorted me out . They did some ultrasounds and then put on some black tape which pushed the swollen fluid where it needed to go To x

I had this- mine was swimmers knee I think, it cleared up after I stopped for a while, but can be others like it due to pressure. or it could be related to the osteoarthritis. Maybe get it checked.

Sounds like you have an effusion which can be caused by osteoarthritis or an injury. Rest ice and elevation and oral ibuprofen 400mg a day with food as well as regular paracetamol.
I am a doctor and can’t make a definite diagnosis over the internet. I think you need to see your GP or even better go to a minor injuries unit before you go away. They have rapid access to blood tests xrays etc
