What is this?

My garden bushes are smothered in them... they sound like bees... they hover like hoverflies...

They don't look like a regular honey bee worker ... look more like drones but there are thousands of them... all you can hear in my garden is a buzz!

What is this??

there are thousands of bee species so it is possibly one of those, plus they are on privet flowers which they like, i never cut my privet hedge until it finishes blooming in late july. the insects love it.

@littlepaddypaws yes It's quite funny because my partner has a bee phobia and hates me planting anything in the garden that attracts bees... I love them ;)

So anyway he's planted this privet and a lot of it too... now the garden is smothered in what I guess are bees ;) Grin

Well done your husband. The more bees the better. We would be in huge trouble without them.

littlepaddypaws · 13/07/2019 12:17

that's ironic, i guess he won't be trimming the hedge any time soon then.Smile

The first picture looks like a hornet hoverfly

CrazyCatLady13 · 13/07/2019 12:34

They're harmless btw!

stardust1986 · 13/07/2019 12:44

@CrazyCatLady13 it does... I googled and there are also black ones of them too... hmm I'm thinking that's what I have

And yes yay for bees!!! I love bees!

I have about 10 solitary bed houses, and love watching the leafcutter bees cutting holes in my plants for their nests! It's my favourite part of summer when they're around.
